Episode: “Tongues of Fire”
Surprisingly, the disciple who denied knowing Jesus later preached the Gospel and 3,000 people were saved. Before being known as Pentecost, the feast was called Shavuot, the Jewish holy day.
Series: “Much Like Peter”
On the shore of the Sea of Galilee, Yeshua began His ministry by calling disciples to follow Him. One of these was Peter — who often acted before thinking. Even so, the Messiah foresaw that this simple fisherman would become the leader of the Apostles and a powerful voice for the Gospel.

This series features teaching by Dr. Jeffrey Seif, reenactments by Israeli actors, David and Kirsten Hart singing songs by Zola on location in Israel, interviews with Israeli Believers, and modern life applications with the Harts. Each program reveals that many of us who follow the Lord are “much like Peter.”

  • 00:01 David Hart: Shalom, hello again. On today's program, a Galilean fisherman speaks to the crowds in the Temple courts, but he
  • 00:11 had help from the Holy Spirit. That's coming up next on "Our Jewish Roots," with Bible
  • 00:14 teaching by Dr. Jeffrey Seif.
  • 00:19 narrator: Sunrise on the Galilee.
  • 00:22 Simon Peter prepares his nets for a day at sea.
  • 00:25 Much like the sea, Peter was unpredictable, calm and steady,
  • 00:31 and then, in an instant, tempestuous.
  • 00:35 As we reflect upon the Lord's most intriguing disciple,
  • 00:39 we can see ourselves because we too have been broken
  • 00:43 and then restored.
  • 00:46 We too, in so many ways, are much like Peter.
  • 00:56 David: Thank you for joining us today; I am David Hart.
  • 00:58 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
  • 01:00 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Jeffrey Seif.
  • 01:01 David: So much of our series takes place in the Galilee,
  • 01:04 but right now in today's program we're going to
  • 01:07 Old City Jerusalem, correct?
  • 01:09 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yes, it's just great to go to the Holy Land.
  • 01:12 Kirsten: It is, and today we see that Peter boldness come alive.
  • 01:17 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Transformation.
  • 01:18 You know, he's a new guy. Got the Holy Spirit in him.
  • 01:20 He's a different kind of character.
  • 01:22 Kirsten: Transfiguration, transformation, a lot of big
  • 01:25 words, but it's a simple life but God used it mightily.
  • 01:29 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yes, yes, yes.
  • 01:31 Kirsten: David and I love going to the Old City on our tours and
  • 01:34 the Jerusalem stone, that golden stone, is so beautiful, but we
  • 01:39 try to think if those stones could speak and tell their
  • 01:43 story, they surely would talk about Messiah's time in
  • 01:47 that ancient city, but I know for sure they'd speak
  • 01:51 about the day when Peter was bold and the Holy Spirit
  • 01:56 spoke through him and 3000 were saved.
  • 02:01 Let's see what happened.
  • 03:50 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: I can't tell you when we're going to see
  • 03:52 him, but I can tell you that we all can experience him.
  • 03:59 The reason why I say that is because in the book called Acts,
  • 04:05 Acts of the Apostles--and frankly, I don't think it's
  • 04:07 a very good name for the book.
  • 04:09 I say that because it doesn't record the acts of the apostles;
  • 04:13 it records some of the acts of Peter, a lot of the acts of
  • 04:19 Paul, but really, it speaks of the acts of the Spirit working
  • 04:24 through individuals whom we refer to as apostles.
  • 04:28 You know the story, I imagine, in the 2nd chapter of
  • 04:31 this book that we call Acts.
  • 04:33 We're told that the talmidim, that the disciples
  • 04:37 were gathered together.
  • 04:38 And then in chapter 2, verse 4, we're told that they were
  • 04:42 "filled with the Ruach ha-Kodesh, the Holy Spirit."
  • 04:47 This happened on a day called Pentecost, which I should say,
  • 04:51 by the way, most Christians think is a Christian holiday
  • 04:55 because of the Christian event that happened on that day.
  • 04:58 But before it ever was a Christian holiday,
  • 05:01 it was a Jewish holiday.
  • 05:02 In fact, Pentecost is just a Greek word for 50 days.
  • 05:05 It is a holy day that Jews know as Shavuot: shavua, week;
  • 05:12 shavuot, weeks; the Feast of Weeks, 47 weeks and a day;
  • 05:17 50 days, Pentecost in the Greek, is a Hebrew holiday that
  • 05:21 commemorates, interestingly, in Judaism, the day when Moshe
  • 05:25 Rabbenu, when Moses, was up on Mount Sinai and he came and he
  • 05:29 delivered the luchots, the tablets.
  • 05:32 It's the birthday of the Older Testament economy.
  • 05:37 Interestingly, on this day, it's the birthday of the Newer
  • 05:41 Testament's economy, that is, the outpouring of the Holy
  • 05:45 Spirit, inasmuch as Moshe Rabbenu came down from the
  • 05:48 mountain with the tablets, with the luchots,
  • 05:51 with the commandments.
  • 05:52 Here, the Lord comes down with the Ruach ha-Kodesh, the Holy
  • 05:56 Spirit, and we're told in verse 4: "They were all filled
  • 06:01 with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues."
  • 06:05 It's a fascinating story, by the way, and you know from
  • 06:09 other readings in the Bible, this is what it's all
  • 06:12 about at the end of the day.
  • 06:14 In the Gospel of John, therein Jesus speaks of being
  • 06:18 born again in the 3rd chapter.
  • 06:20 And ask what that's all about.
  • 06:21 It's born of the Spirit.
  • 06:24 We'll look a little more deeply at it.
  • 06:26 If you're not familiar with it, I beckon you to do so, because
  • 06:29 when push comes to shove, the experience with Jesus is less
  • 06:34 about going to a catechism class in a denomination; it's more of
  • 06:38 being born anew and being regenerated, and when people
  • 06:43 are regenerated, there's changes, there's power,
  • 06:47 there's dunamis in the Greek.
  • 06:48 There's something that happens internally, and it happened to
  • 06:52 these disciples back then and it can happen to us today.
  • 06:57 ♪♪♪
  • 07:03 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: I could, and perhaps I should, but I won't.
  • 07:08 What I could do but what I won't do is spend too much time
  • 07:11 talking about doctrine, worthy as it is in its own right to
  • 07:16 talk about the doctrine and the Holy Spirit.
  • 07:18 But the reason why I don't want to, is I'm more apt to focus on
  • 07:22 the transformative effect that receiving the Holy Spirit
  • 07:27 has on a person's life.
  • 07:29 And I mention that because we see that at play when we look in
  • 07:33 the literature, and I think it's so important not just for a look
  • 07:37 at the book which I've alluded to and which I'll look at it
  • 07:41 again, but I think it's important because you, me, we,
  • 07:44 need transformation, that is, change.
  • 07:48 There really is something inherently powerful with the
  • 07:51 Holy Spirit and it's evidenced not just in what Peter says
  • 07:57 but in the fact that he's doing the saying.
  • 08:01 I mention that because in Acts chapter 2, the once-sheepish,
  • 08:06 fearful, denying Peter, he's emboldened to speak now.
  • 08:13 We're told in verse 14 that he stands up and then
  • 08:16 he raises his voice.
  • 08:19 That is, he who was disinclined to be associated with Jesus for
  • 08:25 fear of the crowd earlier, now speaks boldly publicly.
  • 08:29 That, itself, evidences something that has changed
  • 08:34 within the man the constitution.
  • 08:38 We look at ourselves and see our own human foibles and
  • 08:41 we see 'em in others as well.
  • 08:43 Could it be that people really can change, and the answer to
  • 08:48 that question is yes.
  • 08:52 Because of the agency of the Holy Spirit, when people reach
  • 08:55 up to God, he reaches down to us and he's in the
  • 08:59 business of changing people.
  • 09:02 Our constitutions can be transformed.
  • 09:05 In fact, the word "trans" is a Latin prefix for cross.
  • 09:09 You have a flight, a transatlantic flight,
  • 09:12 it crosses the Atlantic.
  • 09:14 There's something inherent in the gospel that precipitates
  • 09:17 some translation, some movement, into something else, a newer,
  • 09:23 a better, and more powerful way of being.
  • 09:27 That's not something that Peter experienced, that's not
  • 09:30 something that you could experience if you're
  • 09:32 here in the Holy Land.
  • 09:34 Yes, Peter got it, yes, I have it here, but
  • 09:36 you can have it there.

  • 14:03 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: There's a reason why I turned and
  • 14:06 walked toward the camera.
  • 14:09 I wanted to illustrate what Peter says when the crowd says,
  • 14:14 "What shall we do?"
  • 14:17 He said, "Repent."
  • 14:20 Now, the word "repent" in Hebrew, "teshuvah,"
  • 14:23 means to turn.
  • 14:25 It's as in to change your direction, that is to say,
  • 14:29 I opted to take a course toward the camera.
  • 14:34 Repentance harks to turning and focusing on someone,
  • 14:39 that is, the Lord.
  • 14:41 The Greek word "metanoia" says much the same.
  • 14:44 It means in that case, however, meta, change; noia or noesis,
  • 14:48 which means mind.
  • 14:50 But the term in the Hebrew, I think, is more descript.
  • 14:54 In Acts 2, you know, Peter is there, speaking on Shavuot, on
  • 14:59 Pentecost, and we're told, interestingly, in verse 37,
  • 15:04 people that heard his message, "they were cut to the heart,"
  • 15:09 that is, something internal to them presented a kind of
  • 15:14 desperation that something needed to be done.
  • 15:18 This is less than responding to Jesus for a felt need, help for
  • 15:23 a relationship or help with an addiction.
  • 15:28 While all that's there, it's less coming to Jesus to get help
  • 15:33 with something in life, as much as it is turning with the
  • 15:38 realization there's something inherently wrong in life.
  • 15:41 And one is minded to turn the direction toward the Lord.
  • 15:46 That's what he says.
  • 15:47 They say, "What should we do?"
  • 15:49 And he says teshuvah, or change your direction.
  • 15:53 We know the word "repent."
  • 15:55 And, by the way, there's a lot of chutzpa in this, it takes
  • 15:58 guts to speak to people this way but, as I mentioned
  • 16:02 in a previous segment, filled with the Holy Spirit,
  • 16:06 this man had guts.
  • 16:07 "Peter said to them," in verse 38, "Repent, and let each of
  • 16:11 you be immersed in the name of Messiah Yeshua for
  • 16:16 the removal of your sins."
  • 16:18 Or in the classical expression, "Repent and be baptized."
  • 16:23 Now, by the way, baptism itself, people know of it from the
  • 16:27 Christian tradition, but baptism predates it.
  • 16:31 That is, the mikvah or the ritual bath was employed
  • 16:35 in Judaism before the advent of Christianity and
  • 16:38 it still is to this day.
  • 16:41 If someone is encouraged to become Jewish and they go
  • 16:46 through the conversion process, at the tail end of it,
  • 16:49 there's the mikvah.
  • 16:50 It's a complete baptism.
  • 16:51 It's not a sprinkling.
  • 16:53 They go into the mikvah a Gentile; they come
  • 16:55 out of the mikvah a Jew.
  • 16:57 They're born anew, to use the classical Jewish language.
  • 17:02 This expression of going into the water and people present
  • 17:05 with their dirt and they come out a clean kind of person, that
  • 17:08 itself is symbolic of what happens to a person when,
  • 17:12 in fact, they do repent.
  • 17:15 Now, here in Israel and, of course, I'm coming
