  • 03:24 The disciples did as well, you might recall; in Gethsemane,

  • 03:31 Things just kind of drag on and people get dreary.
  • 03:34 They get weary.
  • 03:36 And he says, "Wake up," and in verse 3, "Remember what you have
  • 03:41 received and heard," the exhortation to this watchfulness
  • 03:45 at the end of days to not let yourself slumber.
  • 03:50 There's a message given to another congregation here to the
  • 03:54 east of Ephesus in Philadelphia.
  • 03:57 He says in verse 8, "I know your deeds."
  • 04:00 He says in verse 9, "There are these pretenders among you,
  • 04:04 these fakes, individuals who say they are Jewish but are not."
  • 04:09 By the way, parenthetically, there's a lot of stuff that
  • 04:12 parades around in the name of Jewish perspective on biblical
  • 04:16 literature that's not particularly authentic, not

  • 05:26 To Laodicea now, in verse 14, he says, "You're lukewarm.
  • 05:29 Would that you were either cold or hot," he says, "but I'm gonna

  • 09:43 we get in the book of Ezekiel and in the books of Daniel as
  • 09:48 well, we see this same kind of imagery, fascinating,
  • 09:52 shocking, scary.
  • 09:54 There are these living creatures in verse 8 and they cant:
  • 10:00 "Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh, Adonai-Tzva'ot.
  • 10:03 Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts, who was and is and who is
  • 10:09 to come."
  • 10:12 We're told in verse 9 that these living creatures "would give
  • 10:16 glory and honor and thanks to the One seated on the throne."
  • 10:20 We see this in Ezekiel as well.
  • 10:22 There's the merkabhah, the chariot.
  • 10:25 There's this picture of God in the heavens, swirling around.
  • 10:29 People think flying saucers on occasion,
  • 10:32 fascinating imagery.
  • 10:34 And here, this image is resurrected in Revelation, a
  • 10:37 powerful image of God who's seated on the throne and
  • 10:42 individuals, in verse 10, are worshiping him.
  • 10:46 And I should say, by the way, that we do that now.
  • 10:50 Those who have had an experience with the Lord, even amidst the

  • 11:01 It says it explicitly in the literature that they "worship

  • 11:09 It's an executive decision and I hope that you are minded to do

  • 11:22 created all things; because of your will they existed and were

  • 11:30 So in this segment there's this powerful worshipful image that

  • 24:13 David: I mean, what a picture of what that's gonna be
  • 24:14 like someday.
  • 24:16 Jeffrey: Yeah, it's ramped up.
  • 24:17 There's a juxtaposition.
  • 24:19 You know, earlier in Revelation congregants, believers, are
  • 24:22 sluggish, they're lukewarm.
  • 24:24 And then we pivot to this moment where people are excited.
  • 24:29 Kirsten: And with--I say the word "funky"
  • 24:32 cool-looking creatures.
  • 24:34 I mean, something we've never--creatures we don't have
  • 24:36 on earth.
  • 24:37 I love that, you know, the imagery of what it will be like.
  • 24:40 Jeffrey: And again, that's one of the reasons why it's
  • 24:43 important to look at it with a Jewish lens because we're
  • 24:45 bringing in pictures from Ezekiel that employ
  • 24:51 fantastic imagery.
  • 24:54 Similarly, Daniel, fantastic imagery with animals.
  • 24:58 But here, the throne of God in Ezekiel at the very beginning is
  • 25:03 characterized with these creatures with wings and so
  • 25:07 forth, different faces and the like, and that seems to be at
  • 25:10 play here.
  • 25:12 Looks to me that Revelation is bringing in these Older
  • 25:14 Testament stories and pointing to the culmination of human
  • 25:19 history and the advent of the messianic era.
  • 25:22 Kirsten: And there were--they were confined.
  • 25:24 So many were confined and now we have visions of what it will be
  • 25:28 like after we're let go and we're in heaven, right?
  • 25:34 I mean, gosh, what they've been walking through and now it's
  • 25:36 like, "Here's a glimpse."
  • 25:38 Jeffrey: Right, and when you think, and this is an excellent
  • 25:40 point because it relates to us today, not just back then, that
  • 25:42 these people were suppressed.
  • 25:44 They were pressed under, alone, alienated in a bad way.
  • 25:47 A lot of people today find themselves pressed amidst the
  • 25:51 turbulence of trying times, plague, disorientation,
  • 25:54 despair, unemployment.
  • 25:56 It's not exactly the same but it's when you're looking forward
  • 26:01 to life over the horizon, is there hope?
  • 26:04 And we're looking at a message here that they would have
  • 26:08 understood that there's hope at the end of the day.
  • 26:10 I hope you understand there's hope as well.
  • 26:12 We live in a world today where hope can be in very high demand
  • 26:14 and very short supply.
  • 26:17 You can't read ten minutes into the Bible without stumbling
  • 26:19 into it.
  • 26:21 Kirsten: And your favorite verse is?
  • 26:23 David: I was just thinking about that, Galatians 6:9: "Let us
  • 26:25 never get tired of doing what is right for after a while we'll
  • 26:28 reap a harvest of blessing if you don't get discouraged or
  • 26:32 give up."
  • 26:33 That's my life verse.
  • 26:35 Kirsten: And let patient endurance endure through
  • 26:37 these times.
  • 26:39 Jeffrey: Right, and if you don't lose heart, talk about losing
  • 26:42 heart we don't wanna lose the hearts.
