Episode: “Death and Life”
Some troubles are matters of life and death. Elijah resurrected the widow’s son. Jesus resurrected His friend Lazarus. From Lazarus’ Tomb to Bethany Church, Dr. Jeff Seif teaches of the Lord’s power over life and death, both physical and spiritual.
Series: “The God of Miracles”
We can’t go far in the Bible without encountering a miracle. When the universe was created, the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2). When all seemed hopeless, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day (Matthew 28:6). In this nine-part series, we show our miraculous God at work from Genesis to Revelation, with teachings from the Holy Land by Dr. Jeffrey Seif. We also hear testimonials from those who have experienced the Lord’s supernatural hand in their own lives.

- 02:25 We know Moshe Rabbeinu, Moses, spent 40 years in the wilderness

- 03:47 ♪♪♪
- 03:54 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: When I think of miracles, I think of
- 03:56 the name Elijah and Elisha.
- 04:00 Eliyahu in Hebrew, Elijah, it means God is my God.
- 04:05 Elisha means God is salvation.
- 04:08 Just in the names, there's something personal there.
- 04:12 Religious people have an impersonal relationship
- 04:16 with the divine.
- 04:18 "You know, I go to church, you know, on Christmas and Easter,
- 04:20 every now and again."
- 04:21 But it's not really part of their world.
- 04:23 It's not integrated in.
- 04:25 And it's hard to really experience God if one just keeps
- 04:29 a perennial distance from him.
- 04:32 Well, there was a woman who felt far away.
- 04:34 Her circumstances were abysmal.
- 04:36 We're told in 1 Kings 17 she was a widow and both stories I want
- 04:41 to look at in this program segment have to do with God
- 04:45 rescuing widows, God rescuing widows.
- 04:48 This woman was at her wit's end, just about to starve.
- 04:51 There was no more food in the cupboard, and the Lord shows up
- 04:55 in the person of Elijah whose name is God is my God.
- 05:00 So God is my God shows up, and he tells her in verse 13,
- 05:06 "Fear not!"
- 05:08 Well, I can understand 100% why she was fearful, 'cause she had
- 05:12 a lot to be concerned about, but the Lord planned to do good
- 05:15 for her and there's a wonderful miracle.
- 05:18 What she does is she prepares bread for the prophet and then
- 05:21 bread, bread, bread.
- 05:23 She supplied in abundance.
- 05:25 And I mention this because if you were a widow in antiquity,
- 05:29 your principal supplier was your husband but when the husband's
- 05:33 gone, the supply can be gone.
- 05:36 Some people can find themselves in life's circumstances where
- 05:39 they're really in trouble, they're really in a bad way,
- 05:42 and that was the story of this widow.
- 05:45 But preserved in Scripture was that God, yes, God had a way
- 05:50 of taking care of her.
- 05:52 The promise was that "the jar of flour that she had would not be
- 05:56 exhausted, the jug of oil that she had wouldn't become empty,
- 06:00 according to the Word of the Lord,"
- 06:03 which is spoken by the prophet Elijah.
- 06:06 God's special love for widows is attested here in the literature
- 06:10 and in a variety of other places.
- 06:12 And in this program on miracles, if you're a widow,
- 06:15 I want to tell you don't give up, because,
- 06:17 yes, God, even God can have a miracle for you.
- 06:20 Yes, even you.
- 06:24 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: God's concern for women is amply
- 06:26 attested in both Testaments, whether it's grieving widows in
- 06:30 the Older Testament or grieving sisters in the New, we see God
- 06:35 at work doing miracles in his way and his day.
- 06:42 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: In TV talk, this is what we call a wide shot
- 06:47 in a tight spot.
- 06:50 The reason why I say that, as I am in a very tight spot
- 06:54 and you would expect it to be the case.
- 06:56 I'm coming to you from a tomb.
- 06:58 Doesn't need to be very big.
- 07:00 Inhabitants don't live here, they settle here.
- 07:04 When I tell you where "here" is, then you'll probably recall.
- 07:08 The place is called Bethany.
- 07:11 And Bible readers know that a great miracle happened here, one
- 07:17 that was extremely famous or infamous,
- 07:20 depending on where you stood.
- 07:23 Jesus was known to be a miracle worker.
- 07:25 Early in the Gospel of John chapter 3, Nicodemus comes to
- 07:28 him and says, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher,
- 07:31 have come from God.
- 07:33 For no one can do the signs that You do unless God is with Him!"
- 07:37 So he was known for signs and wonders, but the world ain't
- 07:40 seen nothing like this.
- 07:42 The story starts off slow enough.
- 07:45 Martha and Mary, who were very close to Yeshua, with their
- 07:50 brother Eleazar, Jesus was close to the family.
- 07:54 They sent word to him and they say,
- 07:56 "Lazarus whom you love is sick,"
- 08:01 and he's at the point of death and Jesus didn't make haste
- 08:04 to get to him, interestingly.
- 08:06 He let him die.
- 08:08 One could say, you know, friends like this, who needs enemies.
- 08:12 I'm sure they were very disappointed, but Jesus knew
- 08:17 what he was about to do and when he did it,
- 08:20 believers were excited.
- 08:23 Those that were on the fence became believers.
- 08:26 Those that were disdainful toward him said, "Enough
- 08:29 already, this has gotta stop," because his popularity is
- 08:34 spreading everywhere and they were very, very chagrined.
- 08:41 It's a marvelous story.
- 08:44 In the 17th verse of the 11th chapter, Yeshua shows up,
- 08:49 and we're told there that he had been dead already for 4 days.
- 08:55 It says as much here in verse 17.
- 08:58 "He discovered Lazarus was in the tomb four days."
- 09:01 Now, that's not insignificant, by the way.
- 09:04 From a Jewish perspective, there was a belief in antiquity
- 09:07 that the spirit hovered around for 3 days.
- 09:10 On the 4th day, that's dead, dead.
- 09:14 If Jesus would have come and done the miracle on the 2nd day,
- 09:17 they would have referred to it perhaps as a resuscitation, but
- 09:21 in no uncertain terms Jesus wanted to demonstrate his power
- 09:25 over death in a way that they would see and they saw all
- 09:30 right, and they saw it here, and the world knows the story
- 09:36 because of what happened here when Lazarus was called forth,
- 09:41 and he came out of the tomb.
- 09:44 ♪♪♪
- 09:51 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yesterday, today, and forever God is in
- 09:56 the business of bringing people to life in various ways.
- 10:02 I'm not the least bit surprised that they built a church right
- 10:06 next to Lazarus's tomb.
- 10:10 And why wouldn't they?
- 10:11 It is such a famous story and pilgrims would want to come
- 10:15 to see when it was played out.
- 10:20 In a moment what I want to do is look at an aspect of the story
- 10:25 and consider how it plays out, not 2,000 years ago, but how it
- 10:30 can even play out today.
- 10:34 Well, in the 11th chapter of the Gospel of John,
- 10:38 Jesus cries out in verse 43.
- 10:41 He says, "Lazarus, come out!"
- 10:45 Subsequent to which it says that he came out.
- 10:48 Now, I came out of the tomb.
- 10:50 You saw me in it and leaving it, and I'm telling you it's not
- 10:54 easy to get out, and I'm not all bound up.
- 10:59 You know, he must have wormed out like a caterpillar
- 11:02 or something 'cause he's bound up in grave cloths
- 11:04 and what have you.
- 11:06 The reason why I know he's bound up is 'cause later on Jesus
- 11:08 said, "Unbind him," you know, cut him loose,
- 11:10 and I'll look at that in the text.
- 11:12 But he must have struggled to come out.
- 11:14 You know, life force is within him, but he's still bound up in
- 11:19 the trappings associated with his death.
- 11:23 And you kind of have to struggle to get through that, not just to
- 11:25 get out of the tomb, but to get out of the grave wrappings.
- 11:30 I mention that here because what I just noted is described here.
- 11:35 I'm looking at the literature.
- 11:36 He gets out we're told in verse 44, he's wrapped up in burial
- 11:41 clothing, subsequent to which Jesus tells them,
- 11:46 "Cut him loose, and let him go!"
- 11:52 Now, of course, you can understand that and you should
- 11:56 hear it initially just in the context of the moment.
- 11:58 He's bound up in his death robes, but he's alive now.
- 12:04 And he's asked to--he asked others to cut him out of that,
- 12:10 so that way he'd go on and function as a human being.
- 12:14 It's a fascinating miracle from yesteryear.
- 12:18 And as I mentioned earlier, it really caught around,
- 12:20 and why wouldn't it?
- 12:22 It's so fascinating.
- 12:23 He was dead, going, going, and gone.
- 12:25 And his coming to life just invoked faith and ire too.
- 12:30 Some said, "Enough already, oh goodness.
- 12:32 You know, we gotta do something about this guy.
- 12:33 Everyone's going to follow him."
- 12:36 He was enjoying so much popularity of the rank and file.
- 12:39 But a question that I want to put to table is what might some
- 12:43 of the implications of this be now for people like me and you?
- 12:48 I mention that because we can be born anew and receive new life,
- 12:53 and we indeed have, but there still is something of a process
- 12:58 of getting out of the old wrappings of death.
- 13:02 It doesn't happen immediately.
- 13:06 It can happen incrementally, at different speeds.
- 13:09 I say that because it wasn't immediate here.
- 13:12 He didn't just walk out of the tomb like he did before he died.
- 13:17 I mean, he came out with the stuff.
- 13:20 And the truth of the matter is that a lot of people are born
- 13:23 again, we come out of the spiritual womb,
- 13:27 and we still have the stuff.
- 13:30 And there is the process then of unbinding and cutting loose.
- 13:37 Now I say that because I want to give you some grace for the
- 13:42 moment because it could be that you've come alive in Christ, but
- 13:45 if you're like me, not all is well, you know.
- 13:49 We're just not perfect people.
- 13:52 Perfection isn't achieved on this side of the grave and
- 13:55 especially for a lifetime, being invested in lifestyles, we have
- 13:59 memories burned into our thought processes and the like.
- 14:02 And I'm not trying to make light of that, as much as to say that
- 14:07 there is a means to be delivered from it, which is why I want to
- 14:11 continue to carry on with the Lord, imperfections and all.
- 14:17 You know, Jesus, when he was asked to teach to pray, he
- 14:20 mentioned, "Pray like this, you know, 'Forgive us our trespasses
- 14:24 as we forgive those who trespass against us.'"
- 14:28 I think we'd do well to give people a break,
- 14:30 because God gives us a break because we're not perfect yet.
- 14:33 We're all construction processes.
- 14:35 And it might be it's for that reason that this site here,
- 14:39 behind me is a church as I mentioned earlier,
- 14:41 and next to the church is a grave that's now empty.
- 14:44 People frequent it, imperfect people, and reminded of that,
- 14:48 that Jesus indeed raises people to a new life, and then he
- 14:53 bears with them as they unravel out of their death cloth.
- 14:57 What a miracle. What a story.
- 15:00 I'm glad to bring it to you from here.
- 15:05 Kirsten: We just saw Dr. Seif outside of the Church
- 15:09 of Lazarus, and I want to say it's a miracle that you climbed
- 15:13 out of that tomb, and you weren't all scratched up
- 15:16 and you didn't caught down there.
- 15:18 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: It was smaller than I expected
- 15:20 it would be, quite frankly.
- 15:22 Kirsten: Very tiny, but it was a miracle, a miracle,
- 15:25 that Lazarus, wrapped up, got out of there.
- 15:28 I mean, of course, you know, it was different back then,
- 15:31 but the miracle of life from death.
- 15:35 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yeah, and that's the principal point
- 15:37 because people are wrapped up in death in so many ways, and the
- 15:41 question is can we take that cloth off and have new life,
- 15:45 and the answer is yes.
- 15:47 Kirsten: And also, with the widow, with Elijah,
- 15:50 she was at the end of everything she had.

- 16:02 He steps in where we just can't do anymore.
- 16:06 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: That's right and that's the beauty.
