• 00:22 For whatever was written in former days was written for our
• 00:25 instruction that through endurance and through the
• 00:29 encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope.
• 00:36 "Faith for the Future: Our Journey with the Patriarchs."
• 00:44 David: Thank you so much for joining us today.
• 00:45 I'm David Hart.
• 00:47 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
• 00:48 Jeffrey Seif: And I am Jeffrey Seif.
• 00:50 Here's a word for the wise for today.
• 00:52 Sometimes you have to let go of the past in order
• 00:55 to go discover the future.
• 00:57 Our hero had to do that, did he not?
• 00:59 He had to move away from yesterday to find tomorrow.
• 01:02 Kirsten: Right, and he didn't know what that future
• 01:04 was gonna hold.
• 01:05 He had no idea he was gonna take a nap and all sudden, see this
• 01:08 ladder going to heaven, right?
• 01:09 Jeffrey: No, but he knew we needed to move,
• 01:11 and as he moved out into uncertainty, God showed up.
• 01:14 David: I remember in second-grade Sunday school
• 01:16 class, we heard that story.
• 01:18 There was even a song about it.
• 01:19 Kirsten: Do you know that? See, we're Sunday School babies.
• 01:22 ♪ We are climbing Jacob's Ladder ♪
• 01:24 ♪ We are climbing Jacob's Ladder ♪
• 01:25 Kirsten: But it's all about that today.
• 01:27 David: It's in our mind from second grade.
• 01:28 Jeffrey: Well, I know the song, but when I was
• 01:30 that age, I was in a Yeshiva, a religious Jewish school.
• 01:34 Kirsten: I know, you were here; we were here.
• 01:36 Jeffrey: We were singing a little different.
• 01:37 David: Yes.
• 01:39 If you have your Bible, open it to Genesis 28.
• 01:40 Our drama today is about an angelic encounter with Jacob.
• 01:43 Let's go there now.
• 01:46 ♪♪♪
• 01:53 male narrator: "And Jacob left his mother and father
• 01:55 in Beersheba and journeyed toward Haran."
• 02:06 narrator: "Finding a suitable stone for a pillow, he lay down
• 02:09 and fell asleep."
• 02:14 "And Jacob dreamed there was a ladder that reached
• 02:18 up into heaven."
• 02:21 "He saw angels of God ascending and descending,
• 02:25 and the Lord said, 'I am the Lord, the God of your
• 02:29 grandfather Abraham.
• 02:31 I am the God of Isaac.
• 02:34 I will give you the land that you are lying upon.
• 02:37 I will give this land to you and to your seed, and your seed will
• 02:42 be like the dust of the earth, and you shall expand to the west
• 02:46 and east, to the north and to the south.
• 02:50 All the families of the earth shall be blessed because of you
• 02:54 and your descendants.
• 02:57 I am with you and will protect you wherever you go and will
• 03:01 bring you back to this land.
• 03:04 I will not leave you until I have done
• 03:07 what I have promised.'"
• 03:19 Jeffrey: The Hebrew word is sullam.
• 03:22 They're referred to in song and sermon oftentimes as ladder,
• 03:28 as in Jacob's ladder.
• 03:30 The word sullam arguably refers to a staircase, and so it
• 03:36 is we come to a very famous story right now.
• 03:39 Jacob is on the journey, and in 28:12
• 03:44 we have the hinei sullam, "and behold, a staircase."
• 03:51 I wanna look at that text, but I wanna look at that text within
• 03:55 the context of the story because I think it's so important in
• 04:01 understanding the faith that we need to move forward
• 04:05 in this world.
• 04:06 I mention this because the chapter--and that is, chapter 28
• 04:10 starts off with Yitzhak, with Isaac blessing Jacob
• 04:17 and sending him off.
• 04:19 He blesses him with words, but he sends him off,
• 04:22 and he doesn't really have two nickels to rub together.
• 04:26 Things have deteriorated considerably, and actually his
• 04:30 mother was the agent behind this, ostensibly saying,
• 04:35 "Listen, Jake, you need to go get a woman there
• 04:38 in Padan Aram, Syria."
• 04:41 She beckons him to get out of dodge because things have
• 04:44 deteriorated with Esau, and she imposes that story upon Isaac,
• 04:50 who goes, "Yeah, okay, good deal."
• 04:52 Jacob is called, and we're told he's blessed, but he's blessed
• 04:56 with words in the blessing, not with money, as I'd said,
• 04:59 so he's on his own.
• 05:01 This man's going on a journey.
• 05:03 He's lived by his mother's apron strings his whole life,
• 05:07 but now she can't protect him.
• 05:09 He doesn't have money in his pocket.
• 05:11 He really is alone, and the blessing was here in verse 3,
• 05:16 "May El Shaddai bless you," that is, God Almighty.
• 05:21 I should mention as well that his father Isaac could have
• 05:25 given him wherewithal 'cause he had it, but sometimes people are
• 05:29 sent out alone against the elements, against uncertainty.
• 05:34 God sets this story up that way, and as he's running away, as
• 05:40 he's leaving his family and going to an uncertain world that
• 05:43 he's never been to, there he lays down at night, as you saw
• 05:48 in the drama and as we see in the text, and he uses
• 05:52 a stone as a pillow.
• 05:53 I would've done a little better, to tell you the truth, but look,
• 05:55 what can I say?
• 05:57 He lays down, and he has this vision of heaven opening up, and
• 06:04 he sees this staircase, what some have referred to as a
• 06:09 ladder, and he sees these angels going up and down but at the top
• 06:15 of which he gets a vision of God.
• 06:19 He is told then in verse 13,
• 06:23 "Surprisingly, Adonai," or the Lord,
• 06:27 "was standing there, and he says that 'I am Adonai, I am
• 06:33 the Lord, the God of your father Abraham, the God of Isaac.'"
• 06:38 Now he's gonna be the God of Jacob, you know, that the way
• 06:41 that works is that Jacob is going to see him working
• 06:45 on his behalf.
• 06:46 He says here, "The land on which you lie, I will give it to you
• 06:51 and to your seed."
• 06:52 Now, what's interesting, he's headed away, and he's going
• 06:55 to be gone for 20 years.
• 06:59 Imagine that, 20 years.
• 07:02 He's sending him away, no money, and he says, "Look, by the way,
• 07:07 before you go, I want you to know that this land is yours."
• 07:11 Okay, why the detour?
• 07:12 Why the detour?
• 07:14 Well, "God works in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform."
• 07:18 In verse 15, he says, "Behold, I am with you and I will watch
• 07:24 over you wherever you go."
• 07:28 Isn't that a good word?
• 07:32 "I will watch over you."
• 07:33 God sends us on a journey.
• 07:35 It's a tad bit precarious, but that's where God shows up.
• 07:41 And let me just say before we pull away from this segment,
• 07:44 when we talk about faith with God for the future, we want God
• 07:48 to show up and manifest himself to lead us into the future,
• 07:53 and that's what he does when people find themselves
• 07:56 in precarious places.
• 07:58 In difficult spaces, God indeed shows up,
• 08:02 and here there's a vision.
• 08:04 There's a manifestation.
• 08:05 This is a little more than just hearing a sermon
• 08:08 in church on Sunday.
• 08:10 This is a God who personally shows up in order to settle
• 08:13 a troubled heart.
• 08:16 Let me tell you something: God's been doing it
• 08:17 for thousands of years.
• 08:19 He did it back then. He does it today.
• 08:21 He does it with me. He does it with you.
• 08:23 He does it with us as we reach into the future as we walk with
• 08:28 God to see what he has for us, and he shows up and guides
• 08:32 us and blesses us.
• 08:34 May it be for me and you and all of us, amen.
• 08:47 Jeffrey: Our Creator chose certain places on the
• 08:50 planet to reveal himself and his message of redemption to us.
• 08:55 Mount Sinai, Moriah, Olives, the Mount of Beatitudes,
• 08:59 as well as various seas, rivers, and deserts.
• 09:02 These were the places.
• 09:04 Some are now only ruins, yet they continue to tell of the
• 09:08 Lord's faithfulness and love.
• 09:11 These sacred backdrops have been beautifully captured in our

• 09:21 the Bible from Genesis to Revelation."

• 10:37 Kirsten: Our whole series is about "Faith for the Future,"
• 10:39 and some people have to take a step of faith to commit to going
• 10:44 to Israel.
• 10:46 We have heard many stories of people that had said,
• 10:48 "You know, it's time for me to go.
• 10:49 I'm gonna sign up.
• 10:51 Not sure where they money is coming from," but they take that
• 10:52 step, and God provides in a miraculous way, so we'll be
• 10:56 excited to hear your story, on the bus in Israel, how God
• 11:01 brought you to the Holy Land.
• 11:03 Now let's continue as we meet the beautiful Rachel
• 11:07 for the first time.
• 11:11 narrator: The journey from Beersheba to Haran
• 11:13 had been long and arduous.
• 11:16 Along the way in Bethel, Jacob had experienced a heavenly
• 11:19 encounter in a dream, where the Lord said, "I will give this
• 11:24 land to you, and all the families of the earth shall be
• 11:27 blessed because of you and your descendants."
• 11:30 Now nearly 500 miles from Beersheba,
• 11:33 Haran was finally in sight.
• 11:37 This was the land of his mother's father, Bethuel, and
• 11:41 his mother's brother, Laban.
• 11:44 Now, there were shepherds in the field, tending their flocks.
• 11:47 A well was nearby, and in keeping with the tradition
• 11:50 of a day, a rock covered the well until the evening hours.
• 12:19 narrator: Now, Rachel was a shepherdess,
• 12:22 and she brought her father's sheep to the area of the well.
• 12:26 ♪♪♪
• 12:36 ♪♪♪
• 12:46 ♪♪♪
• 13:24 narrator: And Rachel ran to tell her father about this
• 13:26 visitor from a foreign land whose name was Jacob,
• 13:29 the son of Isaac.
• 13:32 ♪♪♪
• 13:41 Jeffrey: When I think of the drama that goes
• 13:43 along with this segment or that preceded it, my heart weeps,
• 13:49 and I mean that sincerely.
• 13:52 I kind of feel something welling up and going to the tear ducts.
• 13:55 And I'm not saying that because there's some script that's
• 13:59 beckoning me to say it.
• 14:01 The script that I work from principally is my heart, and the
• 14:04 biblical text here, but there's something beautiful, this boy
• 14:08 meets girl story, and I think of--well, the story here is
• 14:14 Rachel, but my Rachel, her name is Barri.
• 14:17 She's been accompanying me in this series, and you're gonna
• 14:22 see her in short order in this program.
• 14:25 What a wonderful woman.
• 14:27 I refer to her as "The way, the truth, and the wife."
• 14:30 The reality is, is I just couldn't live without her.
• 14:33 Unlike Humpty-Dumpty, strong, pushy, but she has to put me
• 14:38 together again every morning, to tell you the truth, she
• 14:41 really--I appreciate the maintenance work and the love.
• 14:44 I appreciate the beauty and the chemistry here, and I think that
• 14:49 for us to get on with it in life and be who God would have us
• 14:54 to be and to go where God would have us to go,
• 14:58 we're not gonna go there alone.
• 15:01 We're gonna get there with friends.
• 15:04 There's a song that goes, "I can get by with a little help
• 15:07 from some friends."
• 15:08 Now, I realize I should be quoting the Bible, not, you
• 15:11 know, popular music, but there's some truth to that, and I note
• 15:16 that here that we're told Jacob is on a journey.
• 15:21 In verse 1, of chapter 29, he's gonna lift up his feet.
• 15:25 It's an interesting expression: He's going to get going,
• 15:29 and sometimes we need to do that.
• 15:31 We need to lift up our feet.
• 15:32 We need to get going and go out there and discover
• 15:36 what God has for us in the future.
• 15:38 This is true for people to graduate high school and
• 15:41 college, but never mind those that find themselves at 18.
• 15:44 For those that find themselves at 58 or 68, we similarly need
• 15:49 to lift up our feet and go out there and see
• 15:52 what God has for us in the future.
• 15:54 Maybe it's a person.
• 15:57 And what we're looking at here, that's gonna appear, maybe
• 15:59 someone else, something else, but the point is I like it,
• 16:02 and I don't wanna make too much of it.
• 16:04 "He lifts up his feet, and he goes."
• 16:07 And as he goes, in verse 6, just coincidentally,
• 16:13 he's on a journey.
• 16:15 He doesn't know who he's going to find, but he's beckoned to go
• 16:20 to a family, and all of a sudden, in verse 6,
• 16:23 "Look, here comes Rachel," Rachel, just like that.
• 16:31 We're told, subsequent to this, he's gonna mobilize energies
• 16:34 and be of service to her.
• 16:37 There's something in his heart that flutters.
• 16:39 There's energies that are mobilized.
• 16:42 He wants to be of service to her because there is that cupid's
• 16:47 arrow, you know, something that struck in the heart.
• 16:49 Definitely he's energized.
• 16:52 He's mobilized to work for her.
• 16:55 You look at the text.
• 16:56 She's coming with flocks, and he's going to help her
• 16:59 with her work.
• 17:00 You know, it's interesting.
• 17:02 We oftentimes thing of the woman as our helpmate.
• 17:05 It's shipping language, by the way, "mate."
• 17:07 You know, on a ship, there's the first mate,
• 17:10 "Hey, matey," you know?
• 17:13 It is what it is.
• 17:15 We tend to think of the woman as our helpmate,
• 17:17 but here the helpmate is the man.
• 17:19 He's helping her.
• 17:21 And by the way, that mutual service, I think's important
• 17:25 too, especially for you guys that are watching
• 17:27 the program right now.
• 17:29 Don't just have service for the woman something
• 17:32 that begins the relationship.
• 17:34 Do carry it on through it.
• 17:36 I mention this, that Jacob is very excited.
• 17:40 He senses something here, if you look in verse 11, and we're told
• 17:44 he's gonna kiss her, lift up his voice,
• 17:47 and then he's going to weep.
• 17:52 Here's a guy that's been alone.
• 17:53 He's up against the elements.
• 17:55 He's up against circumstances, and there's some sense he's
• 18:00 found his way to home, home for the heart in this person,
• 18:04 Rachel.
• 18:06 Things are gonna come unglued by the way.
• 18:08 Rachel was a sweetheart.
• 18:10 Her father was a tad bit manipulative.
• 18:12 Jacob is gonna get shnookered.
• 18:14 And by the way, he needed to get hustled.
• 18:16 He was a hustler himself.
• 18:17 He needed to get out-played.
• 18:19 That's part of his own maturing and growing.
• 18:22 He meets her.
• 18:24 There's a 20-year story that's gonna go by real quick,
• 18:27 and it's gonna be wrought with all kinds of intrigue.
• 18:31 He goes to marry Rachel.
• 18:33 Leah is pawned off on him.
• 18:35 There's a number of things that don't go quite right, but one of
• 18:39 the things here is very clear that here's a man who's thrown
• 18:43 into the faith walk.
• 18:45 He gets his faith up.
• 18:47 He lifts up his feet, and you know what?
• 18:49 He finds his way to the future.
• 18:52 He finds the home for his heart.
• 18:54 And why is that?
• 18:56 Because God guides him to it.
• 18:59 You're gonna see and hear from the home of my heart in a
• 19:02 moment, but before you do, let me just remind you that God's at
• 19:07 work in the world to help faith-walkers.
• 19:10 I really hope that you're going to have faith in God for the
• 19:13 future, for your future.
• 19:16 As I'd said, it's for the young and old alike.
• 19:18 We all need to lift up our feet, go up against the horizon and
• 19:22 see what God has and who he has if that's the situation, but
• 19:27 just know for sure God loves us.
• 19:30 He watches over us.
• 19:31 He's gonna take care of us.
• 19:33 God bless.
• 19:38 Kirsten: When I read this story in the Bible, I honestly
• 19:41 have to feel--I feel a little bit bad for Jacob, and then
• 19:45 I think about what he did with Esau, so this is a little
• 19:48 payback, or do you think God's kind of like--
• 19:51 or he's, "Time to learn a lesson with Laban"?
• 19:54 I don't know. It's a tricky one.
• 19:56 Jeffrey: You know, sometimes people need
• 19:58 to get roughed up a little bit, and I think Jacob was.
• 20:01 Kirsten: I don't think he liked it.
• 20:03 Jeffrey: No.
• 20:05 Kirsten: Now that he had to work another seven years.
• 20:07 Jeffrey: You know, men have hubris, a pride,
• 20:09 you know, and he was somewhat cunning and manipulative, and
• 20:14 you need to get beat up a little bit every now and again,
• 20:16 get humbled.
• 20:17 Kirsten: It took him a while. He had to work for it.
• 20:19 David: Right.
• 20:21 In our drama today, coming up, Isaac and his father-in-law have
• 20:24 some problems, not necessarily traditional as they prepare
• 20:27 for being together?
• 20:29 Jeffrey: Here's the way I look at it, and I'll pivot
• 20:31 to the drama in so doing.
• 20:33 You know, family businesses, working with relatives can go
• 20:37 either really, really good, or really, really bad.
• 20:41 They say, "Don't hire someone you can't fire," and with family
• 20:45 it can get like that.
• 20:46 This deal got out of hand.
• 20:55 narrator: Jacob loved Rachel and agreed with her father,
• 20:59 Laban, to work seven years in exchange for the right
• 21:01 to marry her.
• 21:04 Laban agreed, but at the last moment, he deceived Jacob,
• 21:08 giving him his older daughter, Leah, instead.
• 21:12 Undeterred, Jacob agreed to work yet another seven years
• 21:15 for Rachel, the daughter he deeply loved.
• 21:53 ♪♪♪
• 22:01 Barri Seif: There's much about Jacob waiting 14 years to
• 22:07 marry Rachel, but what about Rachel waiting 14 years?
• 22:12 And especially thinking that she and Jacob were gonna get married
• 22:16 after seven years, and then her sister gets to marry him,
• 22:20 and she has to wait another seven years.
• 22:23 Waiting is not easy, and the Latin derivative also speaks
• 22:29 about waiting is suffering.
• 22:32 It's enduring, enduring patiently,
• 22:36 and it's not easy to wait.
• 22:39 Sometimes when God calls me to wait--and I'm just thankful that
• 22:42 I'm not having a serious disease, and I mean God's
• 22:47 in that waiting room in the hospital, but you know, all of
• 22:50 us one time or another are gonna be in God's waiting room,
• 22:55 and we want to wait with good attitude and be patient.
• 23:01 Just think about Jacob, what he must've gone through those seven
• 23:05 years between Leah and Rachel and what his wedding night
• 23:10 must've been like.
• 23:12 Now, I was single for all those years, 62 years before I said
• 23:17 "I do" to be Seif's wife, Dr. Seif's wife,
• 23:22 and during those years, I didn't go searching.
• 23:26 I really asked God to keep me content.
• 23:29 I wanted contentment because I wanted to do everything I could
• 23:33 as a single before if God was gonna change
• 23:36 my marital status to married.
• 23:38 I wanted to make sure I did everything I could, and I did.
• 23:41 I furthered my education, began a charity in Israel, but since I
• 23:47 got the prize, Dr. Jeffrey Seif, my life has been rich, blessed,
• 23:52 and he was worth waiting for.
• 23:55 We were buddies a long time ago.
• 23:57 He went on to get married, and his wife passed after 30 years,
• 24:01 and she endorsed me.
• 24:03 She gave me a lateral pass by saying, "Jeff, after I pass,
• 24:08 go marry Barri."
• 24:10 Waiting is worth it.
• 24:12 As it says in Psalm 27, the end of that chapter,
• 24:15 Kavei el Adonai, wait on the Lord.
• 24:19 He is good.

• 25:17 They say something in the Bible about a "weary eye."
• 25:20 I don't know what physically was different with her, but here's
• 25:25 this woman that maybe perhaps felt unloved, unwanted.
• 25:30 She was put into an unfortunate situation with a man that really
• 25:35 didn't want her and didn't love her, but she might've felt less
• 25:39 than, and the wonderful news that we have today through this
• 25:43 story is there is a Redeemer that loves those that are even
• 25:48 feeling as if they're not the first choice.
• 25:51 Jeffrey: Yes, I think she felt insecure the
• 25:54 whole duration of her marriage.
• 25:56 And people are looking for satisfaction in marriage.
• 25:58 It doesn't always deliver perfectly.
• 26:00 With that said, let me speak to you for a moment about
• 26:03 a satisfaction that does deliver perfectly.
• 26:06 For those that might be looking for the perfect groom, I want
• 26:09 you to know that his hands are extended.
• 26:12 I was very pleased to welcome my wife, Barri, under the chuppah
• 26:15 when we married, and the Lord has his arms outstretched
• 26:19 to welcome those who wish to come to him.
• 26:22 People look for love in all the wrong places.
• 26:24 Sometimes we look in the right places, but it just doesn't
• 26:27 deliver what he had hoped for.
• 26:29 I believe that there is a hole in the heart that's only filled
• 26:31 by the Lord, and repentance of sins is the first step to get to
• 26:36 him, to be honest about self and circumstance, to own the moment,
• 26:40 to turn to him, and he's all about wanting to deliver.
• 26:43 In fact, the name Jesus, Yeshua, "to save, to deliver, or to
• 26:47 redeem," we can sing about it in old hymns, we can sing about it
• 26:50 in messianic music, but the point is, we turn our attention
• 26:54 to him, and then he turns his attention to us, and we see
• 26:59 circumstances change for the better.
• 27:01 David: That's good. We love singing about Yeshua.
• 27:05 I know personally in my life back in the day, I tried singing
• 27:09 about the world, and there was no future in that.
• 27:12 But right now, we leave you with a song about Yeshua
• 27:16 and also this.
