• 00:15 the conviction of things not seen, for by it the men of old
• 00:19 received divine approval.
• 00:22 For whatever was written in former days was written for our
• 00:25 instruction, that through endurance and through the
• 00:29 encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
• 00:36 "Faith for the Future: Our Journey with the Patriarchs."
• 00:43 David: Thank you so much for joining us today.
• 00:44 I am David Hart.
• 00:46 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
• 00:47 Jeffrey Seif: And I am Jeffrey Seif.
• 00:48 And we are going on a journey with the patriarchs, yes?
• 00:52 Kirsten: And it's all about faith for our future, correct?
• 00:55 Jeffrey: Yes, and faith for the future is a good subject,
• 00:57 isn't it?
• 00:59 David: We're excited your wife is going to join us
• 01:01 in this series.
• 01:02 We're excited about her joining us at this table.
• 01:04 Jeffrey: I'm excited to share her with the world.
• 01:05 David: Yes.
• 01:07 Kirsten: Good, and this is all the trifecta, if you will,
• 01:09 of three generations: the patriarchs
• 01:12 of the Hebrew world, right?
• 01:14 Jeffrey: Yes, to go back and look at their steps, to follow
• 01:18 in the footsteps.
• 01:20 We're following Abraham in a mearah in Hebrew
• 01:24 which means cave.
• 01:25 You know, he traveled and it's easy lodging.
• 01:28 It's safe space, and we're gonna go there.
• 01:30 David: They traveled in tents and also caves.
• 01:32 I believe you're gonna teach from a cave
• 01:34 in this series, correct?
• 01:36 Jeffrey: Yes, we're gonna do that and other spaces as well.
• 01:39 You know, you're on a journey, you just hunker down
• 01:41 where you can.
• 01:42 David: Let's go there now.
• 01:46 narrator: It had been a long journey, starting in Ur, and
• 01:51 Abram took Sarai, his wife; and Lot, his brother's son;
• 01:56 and they followed the banks of the Euphrates River, migrating
• 02:00 northwest past Babylon to Haran.
• 02:05 And now, heading south into Canaan, Abram stops in Bethel
• 02:09 where he builds an altar and calls upon the Lord.
• 03:05 Jeffrey: This might not look like much,
• 03:08 but I got news for you.
• 03:10 In Abram's day, this was a five-star hotel.
• 03:15 In the Word, [speaking Hebrew]
• 03:17 "Go, go," was the command, and Avram left Ur of Chaldee,
• 03:22 and he traveled along the fertile crescent.
• 03:25 Now, when my wife and I travel, we--well, Barri plans everything
• 03:28 in advance, the hotels and the like.
• 03:30 But he was just told to go.
• 03:32 They didn't prepare in advance that we know of.
• 03:34 And they would just hunker down wherever they could.
• 03:37 Caves were popular in antiquity.
• 03:39 Well, first of all, they were air conditioned,
• 03:41 you know, controlled climate.
• 03:43 There's safety there, a little more security,
• 03:45 protection from the elements.
• 03:47 But you know, you can spend some time in a cave but you gotta get
• 03:50 out there in the world, and Abraham did.
• 03:52 And he went on a journey.
• 03:54 At a time when most people didn't travel far, he went
• 03:56 hundreds of miles.
• 03:59 And you know, to do that, there's something you really
• 04:02 need to have and you know what that is?
• 04:05 Faith for the future.
• 04:09 People talk about faith in the future, like, faith,
• 04:12 "Well, you know, it's all worked out in advance."
• 04:14 I don't mean that.
• 04:16 I mean, faith for the future because Abram
• 04:19 was up against problems.
• 04:21 We see it in the literature.
• 04:22 Right off the bat in chapter 12, he's told to go.
• 04:26 He picks up and he goes, in verse 4 and verse 7.
• 04:30 There's something important, especially if you find yourself
• 04:34 in a precarious place in life when you're reasonably
• 04:38 unprotected.
• 04:41 Like Abram would have been as he journeys out there beyond his
• 04:44 kinship network, beyond his security zone.
• 04:48 He's out there in the world and you don't have resources.
• 04:51 You can kind of feel vulnerable.
• 04:53 We're told here in verse 7 that Adonai, or the Lord,
• 04:58 appeared to him.
• 05:00 See, you want the Lord to show up because you need that.
• 05:04 I can imagine his heart needed to be fortified and there's
• 05:08 nothing like a touch from heaven.
• 05:11 I mean, he began the journey, prompted by heaven,
• 05:14 according to the literature.
• 05:15 He felt that impulse, and faith is very much like that, and
• 05:19 we're gonna discuss that as we go deeper into this series.
• 05:22 But we're told here the Lord appeared to him
• 05:25 and then we're told something else.
• 05:27 The Lord said he heard the voice.
• 05:32 In the Jewish world, Thigalog speak of Bat Kol.
• 05:38 It's a feminine term.
• 05:40 Bat is daughter, the daughter of the voice.
• 05:43 The voice of prophecy, that gentle whisper.
• 05:47 And as we make our journey through life, as we go from
• 05:51 point A to B, we might find ourselves in predicaments on
• 05:55 occasion, in less than desirable circumstances.
• 05:59 This is the present scenario, this is where we're shooting for
• 06:02 in the future.
• 06:04 What does it take to get from A to B?
• 06:06 I'll tell you what it takes.
• 06:07 It takes a journey, and it takes faith for the future.
• 06:13 Faith in God for the future.
• 06:17 We're told here that the Lord manifested himself to him and
• 06:20 spoke to him, and he responds to that, we're told, as we look in
• 06:24 verse 8, where he builds an altar to the Lord, mizbeach.
• 06:30 Now, this is before the tabernacle, by the way,
• 06:32 where there's commands to build altars.
• 06:35 We see this in the literature where there's just something
• 06:38 inside of people where they build altars before Leviticus
• 06:42 rolls around and you have a priesthood, before Exodus comes
• 06:46 around and you have a tabernacle.
• 06:48 Before it's mandated, there's something where people want
• 06:51 to offer to the divine.
• 06:54 And you know, that is so very true.
• 06:57 Yeshua, Jesus, told the story of a number of people that were
• 07:00 healed of leprosy and only one turned back and gave thanks.
• 07:06 You know, an altar, mizbeaech, it's a way of saying thank you.
• 07:12 This person was full of thankfulness,
• 07:15 and it's evidenced here.
• 07:17 And isn't that what you want, by the way,
• 07:19 as you journey through life?
• 07:20 And I'm telling you, the journey of life does come
• 07:24 replete with uncertainties.
• 07:27 But if you have a relationship with the Lord and you have
• 07:29 a Bible as a compass, and you have a Holy Spirit guide,
• 07:34 you can get to the future and through the present.
• 07:37 I hope you see some clues to how to do that here, but of course,
• 07:40 our journey's going to continue as we look at
• 07:43 "Faith for the Future."

• 08:56 You are Mrs. Doctor Jeffrey Seif, aren't you?
• 08:59 Barri Seif: Yes, not the policeman
• 09:01 or anything else, yes, yes.
• 09:03 Kirsten: Just the real guy. Barri: Yes.
• 09:05 Kirsten: Tell us a little bit about your background.
• 09:07 Both of you are Jewish, we know that.
• 09:10 And where'd you grow up?
• 09:12 Barri: Kansas City, born and raised,
• 09:13 oldest of three brothers.
• 09:17 Was raised in a Jewish home, both parents.
• 09:21 But not really focused on prayer,
• 09:24 but we were holiday Jews.
• 09:26 'Course, we loved Passover and Hanukkah and of course,
• 09:30 the high holy days: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
• 09:35 David: Kansas City's Bible belt, was it kind of hard being
• 09:38 Jewish in Kansas City?
• 09:40 Barri: Well, it was great growing up.
• 09:42 I didn't come to faith til Dallas, Texas.
• 09:45 And I moved here in '76. Came to faith in 1980.
• 09:50 Met Jeff in 1981, 1982, at a Messianic--
• 09:56 Kirsten: Did he look any different then?
• 09:57 Barri: No, he had a lot of hair back then.
• 10:00 Kirsten: You've been quiet, but I had to bring that in.
• 10:01 Sorry.
• 10:03 Jeffrey: She wasn't interested back then.
• 10:05 I mean, I had the hots for her on the quick,
• 10:07 but she was dismissive.
• 10:08 Barri: Well, I was pursuing an education.
• 10:10 I felt as though I had been given this assignment to go for
• 10:14 my master's, MBA, from the Lord, and that was what I had eyes
• 10:19 for the direction for.
• 10:20 Kirsten: What was your master's in?
• 10:22 Barri: Business administration and human management.
• 10:24 Jeffrey: So guess who manages the family budget?
• 10:25 Kirsten: Who should, right here, right.
• 10:27 Barri: Yeah, and so we met at a fellowship and spent a little
• 10:32 bit of time together, but I wasn't interested
• 10:34 in dating at all.
• 10:36 And I share, you know, dates, figs, Middle Eastern fruit.
• 10:39 I just didn't have that within me.
• 10:43 And then it was years later.
• 10:45 But he always supported women in ministry.
• 10:48 That's one of his great gifts.
• 10:50 Jeffrey: And she's a woman with a ministry.
• 10:53 We stopped at the master's degree.
• 10:55 She has a PhD in biblical studies, wrote a book.
• 10:59 A seminary professor said it was the best treatment
• 11:02 he'd ever seen.
• 11:03 Kirsten: I didn't know that.
• 11:05 Jeffrey: In Romans chapter 10, verse 4, telos.
• 11:06 Barri: Yeah, it was my dissertation.
• 11:08 It got published, so I made use of the time when I was single.
• 11:12 I really did.
• 11:14 I didn't lament for marriage, but I thought that marriage is
• 11:17 a gift, singleness is a gift, and if I was ever
• 11:19 to get married, I wanted to focus on that,
• 11:21 but to focus on being single in the time
• 11:24 that God gave me and I feel like he helped me to do it right
• 11:27 and develop the ministry in Israel where we go on charity
• 11:31 trips, not tours, but I highly recommend going on a Zola tour.
• 11:37 David: How many times have you been?
• 11:39 Barri: Over 36, yeah, over 3 dozen, and hopefully we'll go
• 11:43 soon this year.
• 11:45 Kirsten: Our series is "Faith for the Future."
• 11:47 You had faith for your future, but you didn't know
• 11:49 that this guy was part of that future, did you?
• 11:52 Barri: Not at all, not at all.
• 11:53 If you had told me at age, even 61, that I'd be married
• 11:56 the next year, I would have thought, "You're crazy."
• 11:59 But like Sarah, you know, she believed beyond the point of
• 12:03 time and because she trusted him who had promised to be faithful.
• 12:08 Jeffrey: She thinks I'm the greatest husband in the world.
• 12:10 She was never married before, so she's got nothing
• 12:12 to compare it to.
• 12:13 Lucky me.
• 12:15 Barri: We're blessed.
• 12:16 Kirsten: You are, and we're so thankful that you're with us
• 12:18 for this whole series.
• 12:19 And you give us wisdom on Sarah's journey, and the women
• 12:23 that accompanied these patriarchs of the faith,
• 12:26 and we're so thankful that you've done that.
• 12:28 And speaking of Sarah's journey, there's famine in the land and
• 12:33 Sarai and Abraham--Abram, Avram, walked into a time of much
• 12:40 unknown, especially in Pharaoh's house.
• 12:42 Let's go there now.
• 12:46 narrator: Now there was famine in the land, and Abram
• 12:49 went down into Egypt.
• 13:21 narrator: And Sarai did as Abram asked.
• 13:25 Pharaoh took Sarai into his court and treated Abram well,
• 13:30 giving him sheep, oxen, and many servants.
• 13:34 But the Lord plagued Pharaoh for Sarai was the wife of Abram.
• 13:40 And Pharaoh sent Abram and Sarai away
• 13:44 and all that had been given to them.
• 13:50 Barri: We see Sarai. She is silent.
• 13:52 We know nothing about her experience here from her mouth.
• 13:57 And yet she might be complicit, but she's in a strange place in
• 14:01 a strange country away from her husband,
• 14:04 and she finds herself in the palace of Pharaoh.
• 14:08 It's probably quite difficult for her, and she has no idea
• 14:12 when she's going to get out.
• 14:14 Have you ever been in a situation where you have
• 14:17 no idea how you got there?
• 14:20 It was difficult.
• 14:22 You don't know the end of that situation, but here you are
• 14:27 and it's a place of suffering, it's a place of waiting.
• 14:30 Well, I've been there, some years ago.
• 14:34 I was living in the great city of Nashville, Tennessee, and I
• 14:37 got transferred to Kansas City, a place where all my Jewish
• 14:40 family was and I was afraid to go there
• 14:44 because of my faith in Yeshua.
• 14:47 But in the midst of being transferred, I broke my foot at
• 14:51 a worship conference and I didn't just break it,
• 14:53 I crushed it, dancing the horah.
• 14:56 And when I arrived in Kansas City, I had to have two
• 15:00 surgeries and I found myself on the bed for almost five months.
• 15:04 Not five weeks, but five months, with my foot above my heart
• 15:10 because my foot would not heal.
• 15:12 And there I was, and after a few pity parties with me, myself,
• 15:18 and I, I just sensed that the Lord wanted me to learn Hebrew.
• 15:22 I mean, what else are you gonna do when you're in your bed
• 15:24 for all that length of time?
• 15:26 And so I studied, and I thought, "Well, maybe I'll go get bat
• 15:30 mitzvah'd at age 45," which was the conclusion of all this.
• 15:35 But in the midst of this, too, just focusing on the Lord, what
• 15:39 did he have, what purpose was there in the midst of this?
• 15:42 I didn't wanna waste one lesson that God had for me
• 15:46 on my own bed of affliction.
• 15:49 And at the end of this time, not only did I get bat mitzvah'd,
• 15:53 but I also became a published author of a devotional on the
• 15:58 names of God, so God never wastes suffering.
• 16:01 And we can trust him when we're in the dark,
• 16:04 just like Sarah did.
• 16:05 She got good results, and you will too.
• 16:11 Kirsten: Our whole series is about faith for the future, and
• 16:15 Barri, I've got to be honest, if Dave said,
• 16:18 "Hey, this gal isn't my wife.
• 16:20 Pharaoh, you take her," I don't know if I'd have
• 16:21 a lot of faith in him, in you.
• 16:24 I love you.
• 16:26 I don't know if you'd have a lot of faith in Jeff
• 16:27 if they did that to us.
• 16:28 Barri: I'm in your ballpark.
• 16:30 I feel the same way and it's amazing that Sarah
• 16:32 never opened her mouth up once.
• 16:33 We don't know anything about that.
• 16:35 Kirsten: That wasn't recorded.
• 16:36 She had to have, right, sometime.
• 16:38 Barri: Oh my goodness, yes.
• 16:39 It's amazing they were still married after that.
• 16:41 Kirsten: Right, but she, amazingly, had faith that God
• 16:43 would provide, and he did, didn't he?
• 16:45 Barri: Yes, yes, the doors finally opened for her.
• 16:48 And waiting is never easy.
• 16:51 I remember waiting to get my braces off my teeth.
• 16:53 That was one of the first things.
• 16:55 And for Sarai, it must have been brutal and yet she endured.
• 17:00 Her faith came through for her.
• 17:02 Whether it's doors, whether it's doctors, whether it's donations.
• 17:07 It's God-directed.
• 17:09 Kirsten: And in the end, Pharaoh came through for her and
• 17:13 for Abram, because he sent them with animals and goods
• 17:18 and all kinds of things, so the financial reward
• 17:21 came through her waiting.
• 17:24 And as Pharaoh sent Abram and Sarai off with finances to
• 17:30 continue their journey of faith, we are also thankful for all of
• 17:34 you that send donations, faithful donations, to us to
• 17:38 make this ministry continue and that we still go out
• 17:41 on the airwaves.
• 17:43 We're very thankful for that.
• 17:44 Jeffrey: Yes, thank you for everything.
• 17:46 We're going to journey now.
• 17:48 We're gonna leave Egypt in this drama and happily make
• 17:51 our way back to Eretz Canaan, the land of Canaan.
• 17:58 narrator: "And the Lord said unto Abram, 'Lift up thine eyes
• 18:03 and look from the place where thou art,
• 18:06 northward and southward and eastward, and westward.
• 18:12 For all the land which thou seest to thee will I give it
• 18:17 and to thy seed forever.'"
• 18:21 ♪♪♪
• 18:31 ♪♪♪
• 19:02 Jeffrey: God promised Abraham land, not a cave.
• 19:08 Here we are. But from here we go.
• 19:11 This, in effect, was just a road stop on the highway of life for
• 19:16 Abram as he got about pursuing his future.
• 19:20 And it's great to see, to my way of thinking,
• 19:23 the resolve that he has, the faith.
• 19:26 And it's beautiful to see the Lord showing up.
• 19:31 Abram, to tell you the truth, was up-ended, however,
• 19:34 by his own base nature, it seems to me, shortly thereafter.
• 19:37 You know, he finds himself in a predicament, in a pickle.
• 19:40 He's concerned and you heard my wife just speak about how
• 19:43 he says to his wife, "Hey, look, tell 'em you're my sister.
• 19:46 You know, you kind of are, technically."
• 19:48 I mean, that's very unimpressive, to me, you know.
• 19:50 Chivalry is dead.
• 19:52 If I pawned off my wife because of concerns, I'm sure that she
• 19:57 would be displeased, and I wouldn't do it,
• 19:59 to tell you the truth.
• 20:00 Now, here I am critical of Abram.
• 20:02 He's not here to defend himself.
• 20:03 But my only point in all of this is that I look at God's ways
• 20:07 and promises are perfect, but he's working it
• 20:09 through imperfect people.
• 20:12 There's no perfection.
• 20:14 I see the grace of God at work even in the Hebrew Bible.
• 20:17 People think that all the grace is in the new book and legalism
• 20:19 in the Jew book, but right here at the very beginning, when you
• 20:23 see God engaging Avram, the Hebraios, the Hebrew.
• 20:28 Right there and then you see a kind of graciousness.
• 20:31 Well, we move on past Abram's little road bump and finally
• 20:35 we get back into Eretz Canaan.
• 20:38 I want you to look in chapter 13 now, verse 15,
• 20:42 where the promise is reiterated.
• 20:45 I don't think Sarah held it against him.
• 20:47 Maybe she did for a while.
• 20:48 They might have needed some family counseling.
• 20:50 God forgave him because of his faith and faithfulness, finally.
• 20:55 He says in verse 15, in chapter 13, he speaks to him again
• 20:59 and says, "For all the land that you're looking at,
• 21:03 I will give to you and to your seed forever."
• 21:09 I like that for a variety of reasons, one of which is the
• 21:13 word "seed," zara in Hebrew, is my granddaughter's name.
• 21:19 So bingo, and I love her dearly.
• 21:22 But he says, "I'll give it to you and your progeny."
• 21:26 There's no point just giving it to him; he's 75 years old
• 21:28 when he starts the journey.
• 21:30 I mean, how much time does he have, you know?
• 21:32 I'm 65 and I know the better part of my life has been lived.
• 21:34 But I'm--a lot of verve and energy, I'm going after it.
• 21:38 For me, it ain't over til it's over.
• 21:40 Abram was an older fellow, but he kept that walk up
• 21:43 and kept that shield of faith going.
• 21:45 But still, it's not just a promise to him;
• 21:47 it's for what will come after him, his seed.
• 21:51 Keep in mind that Sarah was a little slow in coming up
• 21:53 with a child, but that's a story for another program.
• 21:55 But the promise here, to him, is that he has a future
• 21:59 in terms of his progeny, terms of his lineage,
• 22:02 though he doesn't see it.
• 22:04 And he's told here he has a future in terms of a place.
• 22:07 It's specific.
• 22:09 He goes on to say that it is for eternity.
• 22:13 "I will give it to you and to your seed forever,"
• 22:17 in perpetuity.
• 22:19 Now, I don't get it.
• 22:20 There are people that claim to be Bible readers and Bible
• 22:24 believers, but they argue, "Well, the Jewish people,
• 22:27 that's not their land.
• 22:29 They don't have a deed to the property."
• 22:30 I don't know what book they're reading.
• 22:34 You know, you don't need a PhD in Bible to understand
• 22:37 that it's given to them.
• 22:39 And if you look at a program like ours, "Our Jewish Roots,"
• 22:43 we underscore that.
• 22:44 We press that point.
• 22:46 God gave people a place.
• 22:49 And it's in perpetuity, forever.
• 22:52 He goes on to say in verse 16:
• 22:54 "I will make your seed like the dust."
• 22:57 Later on, we'll see, "Like the stars."
• 23:00 And he goes on to say in verse 17 then against the backdrop of
• 23:05 this promise, it's not just a word for him; it's a word for me
• 23:08 and you, 'cause sometimes we get waylaid, we get discouraged.
• 23:12 After giving the promise, after reiterating the promise,
• 23:15 what does he say?
• 23:16 "Get up! Walk about."
• 23:19 You know, people can get discouraged and they just
• 23:21 kind of get slothful, indolent, despairing.
• 23:25 But there is that word "Get up!"
• 23:27 In fact, chapter 12 began with that
• 23:29 [speaking Hebrew] "Go, go."
• 23:31 Off he went.
• 23:33 Hopefully, we go with him on the journey as we look to walk
• 23:37 by faith and believe God for a great future.

• 24:42 Even Abram and Sarai had faith.
• 24:45 They didn't know that they were gonna end up in Pharaoh's house
• 24:48 and a famine and--but we just take that next step, don't we?
• 24:51 Jeffrey: We don't know the future, but we can know
• 24:53 the person who holds the key to the future.
• 24:56 And I think that's very important.
• 24:58 David: I think what we're gonna learn from you, your
• 25:00 teaching, and in this whole series, is applicable for us
• 25:05 in our lives.
• 25:06 Jeffrey: I think so, because some of us are hanging on
• 25:08 by a thread.
• 25:09 Life can be so very precarious.
• 25:11 We're worried about the next report from the doctor, we're
• 25:13 worried about the next plunge in the stock market,
• 25:17 we're concerned about those that we love and our webs
• 25:19 of relationships.
• 25:21 We can fear we're gonna get swept away and annihilated
• 25:23 and a lot of people live that way
• 25:26 with that inner dialogue internally.
• 25:28 It's why it's good to read the Bible.
• 25:30 David: Even back in Genesis, it was kind of a roller coaster:
• 25:32 good times--the faith wasn't always as strong but again,
• 25:38 it's for us to learn.
• 25:39 Jeffrey: To your point, it's been like that from Genesis to
• 25:41 Revelation, but God has been around between Genesis and
• 25:45 Revelation, and he is an ever-present help in time
• 25:49 of trouble, and he's a guide as well.
• 25:51 David: We need that faith.
• 25:52 Kirsten: And he brings us through 'cause it's interesting,
• 25:55 here's Avram or Abram saying, "Tell him you're my sister,"
• 25:59 which she kind of was.
• 26:01 But he was even thinking, "I don't know what tomorrow holds.
• 26:04 They could take my life," even though he had a promise on his
• 26:07 life that "future generations will come from you."
• 26:10 Jeffrey: Yeah, it's funny you should alight upon that.
• 26:12 If I was a woman, I wouldn't have liked that play personally.
• 26:15 But God works through imperfect people to accomplish
• 26:17 his perfect will.
• 26:19 Kirsten: And he did, and he kept his covenant promise.
• 26:21 That's what's important. He keeps that with us too.
• 26:23 Jeffrey: Yes, indeed.
