  • 00:22 desert, an unsolved mystery of a priceless treasure.
  • 00:31 It started with Abraham, was assembled by Moses, enshrined by
  • 00:38 King Solomon.
  • 00:40 Its fame would summon kings and beckon pharaohs.
  • 00:45 Its glory ravaged foreign gods.
  • 00:50 What was the source of this might?
  • 00:55 Is history about to unleash its desert secrets?

  • 01:05 The quest of the temple treasures and the Ark of the
  • 01:08 Covenant, "Jehovah's Treasure."

  • 01:18 David Hart: We are so glad you've joined us today, I'm
  • 01:20 David Hart.
  • 01:21 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
  • 01:23 Jeffery Seif: I am Jeffrey Seif, and I have a question.
  • 01:26 Do you remember the expression "dig it," as in I dig it?
  • 01:30 Sixties, seventies, I'm dating myself, it's a way of saying
  • 01:33 there's something really cool.
  • 01:35 Well, we're digging it all right, biblical archeology.
  • 01:37 And that's pretty cool too, yes?
  • 01:39 Kirsten: Oh, we love it.
  • 01:41 I mean, who doesn't want to watch a program about that?
  • 01:43 And we're in our second program of a three part series.

  • 01:56 But today, we are beginning with the Israelites, the Hebrews at
  • 02:01 Canaan just about to cross over the Jordan River.
  • 02:12 male announcer: And as they that bear the ark were come unto
  • 02:14 Jordan, the waters were cut off, and all the Israelites passed
  • 02:22 over on dry ground unto Jericho.
  • 02:25 And the people encamped in Gilgal on the east border
  • 02:28 of Jericho.
  • 02:32 At that time, the Lord said unto Joshua, "Make thee sharp knives
  • 02:37 and circumcise again the children of Israel the
  • 02:40 second time."
  • 02:43 Rabbi Uri Einhorn.
  • 02:45 Uri Einhorn: When we're talking about second circumcision in the
  • 02:47 Jewish history, the first one was before they left Egypt.
  • 02:51 They wandered 40 years in the desert.
  • 02:53 In that time, they could not circumcise themselves, it was a
  • 02:55 very harsh atmosphere.
  • 02:57 So, when they came back and into the land of Israel, they had to
  • 03:01 circumcise themselves again.
  • 03:03 This was a covenant with God, and so there was a
  • 03:06 massive circumcision.
  • 03:07 It says that they circumcised themselves, means each one
  • 03:10 created a knife and circumcised the other person.
  • 03:13 That's what we talk about the second circumcision, second
  • 03:15 massive circumcision.
  • 03:18 announcer: For the children of Israel, the conquest of Jericho
  • 03:20 was key to the penetration of Canaan.
  • 03:23 So formidable were Jericho's walls that 40,000 Israelite
  • 03:27 soldiers would not even attempt to penetrate the mighty city.
  • 03:30 God had other plans.
  • 03:32 "And ye shall compass the city six days.
  • 03:36 And the seventh day, ye shall compass the city seven times,
  • 03:41 and the priests shall blow the trumpets and shout with a great
  • 03:45 shout, and the wall of the city shall fall flat."
  • 03:52 Today, archeologists are divided on what actually happened here
  • 03:56 at Jericho, yet the biblical account is supported word for
  • 04:00 word by the Dead Sea scrolls found in the nearby caves
  • 04:04 of Qumran.
  • 04:07 Meanwhile, a short distance away, a lingering mystery.
  • 04:10 Members of Gutfeld's crew gather by the new tunnel to study a
  • 04:14 survey of the area.
  • 04:17 male: Cave number 66 is mentioned in the book by just
  • 04:20 one sentence.
  • 04:21 Doesn't say anything about what's in the cave.
  • 04:24 That's when they dug and found it empty at 130 meters deep.
  • 04:27 And where we are now is where this blue line that was never
  • 04:30 mentioned, it's a new archeological dig, it never
  • 04:33 mentioned any of the surveys.
  • 04:35 male: And what made Oren dig here, and now, and why?
  • 04:44 David Dolan: The Ark of the Covenant has finally made it
  • 04:46 across the Jordan River into the Promised Land.
  • 04:49 But it won't find its home here in Jerusalem for many years
  • 04:52 to come.
  • 04:54 This mysterious golden ark is beginning to get a reputation,
  • 04:58 even among some of Israel's enemies.
  • 05:00 They've heard about this God of the Israelites.
  • 05:03 He's made some kind of a pact with his people, apparently
  • 05:06 chosen to see them through despite their hardened hearts.
  • 05:10 announcer: Shiloh is located in the heartland of the country,
  • 05:13 barely 20 miles from Jerusalem.
  • 05:15 It would become the center of worship for some 400 years.
  • 05:19 The tabernacle will be erected here in this quiet,
  • 05:21 uninhabited valley.
  • 05:25 All of the artifacts used in worship remain intact.
  • 05:28 The seven branched golden menorah, altar of incense, the
  • 05:34 table of show bread, each with a specific purpose overseen by
  • 05:40 specific priests from the tribe of Levi.
  • 05:46 Once a year on the day of atonement, the high priest have
  • 05:49 the venerable task of parting an immense linen curtain to enter
  • 05:54 the Holy of Holies.
  • 05:57 To be in this room was to be in the presence of almighty
  • 06:00 Yahweh, Jehovah.
  • 06:05 Every move is planned, every step calculated.
  • 06:12 Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the
  • 06:16 people, and bring his blood within the veil and sprinkle the
  • 06:19 blood with his finger seven times upon the mercy seat, for
  • 06:24 it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
  • 06:40 Jeffrey: What a thrill it is to bring you to the Bible lands and
  • 06:44 bring you competent people to offer a telling of it all.
  • 06:48 I'm not speaking of myself.
  • 06:49 I know you've enjoyed David Dolan, a former CBS
  • 06:53 correspondent, who gives us his views on biblical news.
  • 06:57 Of course, you've heard from archeologists, me a little bit,
  • 07:01 and seen a lot of great pictures as together we go off in search
  • 07:04 of Jehovah's treasure.
  • 07:09 male announcer: The biblical period that follows Joshua's
  • 07:11 death is known as the time of the judges.
  • 07:14 The formative nation seeks to establish itself, moving ever
  • 07:17 westward through the lush hill country.
  • 07:20 Here, they'll once again encounter a consortium
  • 07:23 of enemies.
  • 07:25 And here, they'll fall prey to the beckoning of foreign gods.
  • 07:29 In present day Ashkelon, evidence has been found of
  • 07:32 Israel's archenemies, the Philistines.
  • 07:35 Archaeologist Ian Stern.
  • 07:38 Ian Stern: The Philistines were part of a mass movement of
  • 07:41 peoples in the 13th century BCE, making their way from Greece to
  • 07:44 the area of southern Canaan, setting up five cities known as
  • 07:48 the Philistine Pentapolis.
  • 07:51 They brought with them a well-trained army, an army
  • 07:53 consisting of archers, consisting of calvary,
  • 07:55 and charioteers.
  • 07:57 They also brought with them distinctive pottery from Greece.
  • 08:00 It was inevitable that these people would eventually clash
  • 08:03 with the Israelites in the mountains.
  • 08:05 The Israelites inched their way down from the mountainous area
  • 08:08 towards the coastal plain, meeting with these Philistines
  • 08:11 in a northern city in a place that was called Aphek.
  • 08:15 announcer: "Now, Israel went out against the Philistines to
  • 08:17 battle and pitched beside Ebenezer.
  • 08:21 And the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
  • 08:24 And the Philistines put themselves in array
  • 08:26 against Israel.
  • 08:29 And when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the
  • 08:32 Philistines and Aphek."
  • 08:35 Israel would lose two battles, 34,000 lives, and most
  • 08:40 tragically the Ark of the Covenant.
  • 08:50 David: It was bad enough that the Israelites should lose their
  • 08:53 battle at Aphek.
  • 08:54 To lose the Ark of the Covenant to the Philistines, it was
  • 08:58 unheard of.
  • 09:00 Nothing could be more disheartening, or so it
  • 09:03 would seem.
  • 09:05 But the Bible records that during this period of the
  • 09:07 Judges, the children of Israel had reverted to idol worship.
  • 09:10 They were no longer listening to their covenant God.
  • 09:13 In the absence of leaders like Moses and Joshua, even the
  • 09:17 priesthood had become corrupt.
  • 09:20 ♪♪♪
  • 09:27 announcer: The captured Ark of the Covenant would be taken into
  • 09:29 the Philistine temple in Ashdod.
  • 09:33 Being a people of the sea, the Philistines based their cheap
  • 09:36 deity on a creature from the sea.
  • 09:39 And so it was on this extraordinary evening that the
  • 09:42 holy ark shared a room with a foreign god named Dagon, the
  • 09:50 fish god.
  • 09:52 This was a night for a fateful confrontation.
  • 09:56 ♪♪♪
  • 10:22 announcer: "When the Philistines arose early in the
  • 10:24 morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the
  • 10:28 earth before the ark of the Lord, and his head and both
  • 10:32 palms were cut off.
  • 10:36 And the men of Ashdod said, 'The ark of the God of Israel shall
  • 10:39 not abide with us, for his hand is sore upon us.'
  • 10:43 And God smote the city of Ashdod, and they sent the ark of
  • 10:49 God to Ekron."
  • 10:53 David: For seven months, the ark would travel from one Philistine
  • 10:56 city to another.
  • 10:59 At each site, the results were the same, plague and death such
  • 11:02 as the Philistines had never known before.
  • 11:04 It had become quite clear that they could not harness the might
  • 11:08 of this Israelite God, who they perceived must be living in this
  • 11:12 troublesome golden box.
  • 11:14 Clearly, the ark had to be returned to its rightful owners.
  • 11:17 Of course, the question was, were the Israelites really ready
  • 11:23 for the ark's return?
  • 11:25 Had they learned anything in its absence about the God who
  • 11:27 delivered their forefathers out of Egypt?
  • 11:31 They would soon find out.
  • 11:33 In a weird twist of fate, the Philistines decided to return
  • 11:36 the ark.
  • 11:38 Well, sort of.
  • 11:40 They figured if an unmanned cart could make it all the way back
  • 11:43 to the children of Israel, it would be a sign that the ark
  • 11:45 rightfully belonged to the Israelites.
  • 11:49 Miraculously, the unmanned cart finds its way to Beth Shemesh, a
  • 11:53 city owned by the Levites.
  • 11:56 announcer: "As they were reaping their wheat harvest, they lifted
  • 11:58 up their eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
  • 12:02 And they took the wood of the car and the cows thereof and
  • 12:05 offered a burnt offering unto the Lord."
  • 12:14 David: Unfortunately, there were still some more lessons to
  • 12:16 be learned.
  • 12:18 Moses had been given specific guidelines regarding the
  • 12:20 handling of the holy ark.
  • 12:23 Respect was paramount.
  • 12:25 announcer: "And he smote the men of Beth Shemesh because they had
  • 12:28 looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people
  • 12:32 50,000 and three score and ten men."
  • 12:37 ♪♪♪
  • 12:45 David: Despite God's continued efforts to commune with his
  • 12:47 covenant people, they just didn't seem to get it.
  • 12:52 Their exuberance was so much lip service.
  • 12:54 Their actions proved that they were quite content living
  • 12:57 in pride.
  • 12:59 In the absence of any spiritual authority, the ark would be
  • 13:02 placed in a private residence at a place called Kiryat Ye'arim.
  • 13:12 announcer: "And the men of Kiryat Ye'arim came and fetched
  • 13:15 up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of
  • 13:18 Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to
  • 13:22 keep the ark of the Lord.
  • 13:25 And it came to pass while the ark of abode in Kiryat Ye'arim
  • 13:28 that the time was long, for it was 20 years."
  • 13:33 ♪♪♪
  • 13:39 Ian: We're standing on a hilltop not far from Jerusalem that was
  • 13:41 identified in 1838 by Edward Robinson as the place of ancient
  • 13:45 Kiryat Ye'arim, the town of the woods, the site where the Ark of
  • 13:49 the Covenant resided for 20 years.
  • 13:52 He based his decision or his identification on the fact that
  • 13:55 we're standing between the tribal area of Judah and the
  • 13:58 tribal area of Benjamin.
  • 14:00 This was reinforced by the fact that right here in front of us,
  • 14:02 we have a mosaic floor dating from the fifth century, part of
  • 14:06 what was a Byzantine church.
  • 14:08 What we know of the Byzantine time period is that many
  • 14:10 churches were built, and those churches were built to mark a
  • 14:13 biblical event, very possibly here the place where Abinadab
  • 14:17 and Eleazar, the guardians of that ark for 20 years, had
  • 14:21 their home.
  • 14:23 Also in this spot is a church built in 1924, the church of Our
  • 14:26 Lady of the Ark of the Covenant, also marking that same spot.
  • 14:30 But what we do know is it was in this area that the most valuable
  • 14:34 treasure in the world, the Ark of the Covenant, resided for 20
  • 14:37 years before David brought it with him to Jerusalem.
  • 14:43 ♪♪♪

  • 15:33 Right now, let's return to "Jehovah's Treasure."
  • 15:36 We have shown you the site where the Ark of the Covenant may have
  • 15:40 stayed for over 20 years before King David brought it
  • 15:43 to Jerusalem.
  • 15:45 Now, we return to the site where archaeologists continue their
  • 15:47 search for the hiding place of the ark or some of the temple
  • 15:51 treasures, using clues based on the ancient copper scroll.
  • 15:59 Oren Gutfeld: I believe that not the people who were hidden the
  • 16:03 treasures made the tunnel.
  • 16:05 Because the sons or someone else who hid the treasures
  • 16:11 couldn't do such a huge project.
  • 16:14 This project connect to someone very, very rich, very wealthy,
  • 16:20 very important, maybe even a king, one of the Hasmonaean
  • 16:24 kings, or someone who relates to Herod the Great.
  • 16:28 So, until now, I believe that it's somehow connected to a
  • 16:31 tomb, and perhaps used in secondary use to hide the
  • 16:35 treasures that are mentioned in the copper scroll.
  • 16:40 announcer: An intriguing parallel has emerged.
  • 16:42 Gutfeld's tunnels seems to closely resemble those found in
  • 16:46 the Egyptian pyramids.
  • 16:48 Oren: In this section, it looks like a pyramid.
  • 16:51 Although the photos of Hyrcania or the mountain of Hyrcania is
  • 16:54 in artificial--it's natural, of course.
  • 16:58 But if you look in a section, you can see that the tunnel goes
  • 17:02 down in 35 degrees like in the pyramids, exactly under the top
  • 17:05 of the hill like a pyramid actually.
  • 17:11 announcer: And there is perhaps yet another connection with
  • 17:13 Egypt's great pyramid.
  • 17:15 At high noon on the summer solstice, an angle cast by the
  • 17:18 light reflected off the pyramid intersects the likely site of
  • 17:23 the Red Sea crossing, the Jordan River crossing, and Bethlehem.
  • 17:27 Is it a coincidence that this same line passes through
  • 17:31 Hyrcania, the site of Gutfeld's mysterious tunnels?
  • 17:35 A short distance from Hyrcania in the caves of Qumran is an
  • 17:38 oasis called Ein Gedi.
  • 17:41 Still today, as if out of nowhere, this remarkable refuge
  • 17:46 surprises visitors with lavish waterfalls and hidden caves of
  • 17:51 its own.
  • 17:53 It's here that one of Israel's greatest leaders would ready his
  • 17:57 heart for the direction his people so desperately needed.
  • 18:01 David, shepherd, musician, warrior,
  • 18:08 now king of all Israel.
  • 18:12 "I have found David my servant.
  • 18:15 My mercy will keep for him forevermore, and my covenant
  • 18:18 shall stand fast with him.
  • 18:21 His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun
  • 18:25 before me."
  • 18:28 David: With Israel's leadership again in capable hands, you'd
  • 18:31 think that things would run smoothly for a change.
  • 18:34 Unfortunately, in his enthusiasm to have the ark brought here to
  • 18:38 Jerusalem, King David apparently forgets some very
  • 18:42 important details.
  • 18:44 First of all, the job of transporting any holy treasure
  • 18:47 should be left solely in the hands of the priests.
  • 18:50 Secondly, it should never be touched, except by the priests.
  • 18:55 To abide by this law meant life.
  • 18:58 To break this law meant death.
  • 19:01 announcer: "And they brought the ark out of the house of Abinadab
  • 19:04 and set it upon a cart.
  • 19:06 And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the cart.
  • 19:09 And when they came to the threshing floor, Uzzah put forth
  • 19:13 his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it.
  • 19:17 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God
  • 19:20 smote him there for his error, and there he died by the ark
  • 19:24 of God.
  • 19:29 Ian: We're standing here in area G* of the city of David
  • 19:33 excavations, a site where 3,000 years ago, David and his men
  • 19:37 were going to conquer the city, which was at that time the
  • 19:40 capitol of the Jebusites.
  • 19:43 The Jebusites had placed their lame and their blind on the
  • 19:45 walls and gates of the city, mocking David's army.
  • 19:49 David ingeniously, with the help of his commander in chief Johab,
  • 19:54 go through what is called in the Bible the tsinnor, the
  • 19:57 water tunnel.
  • 19:59 They climb through the water tunnel, enter into the city, and
  • 20:01 then run to the water gate, opening the city up, allowing
  • 20:04 David's army to come through, making this at that point the
  • 20:07 city of David.
  • 20:09 Behind us over here is a step stone structure.
  • 20:12 And above that structure, a palace, probably the palace of
  • 20:15 David himself.
  • 20:17 It was in this city that David later on will bring the Ark of
  • 20:20 the Covenant, where it will eventually have its final
  • 20:22 resting place.
  • 20:25 announcer: Despite his palatial surroundings, David had come to
  • 20:30 revere his source.
  • 20:32 He had given food unto them that fear him.
  • 20:35 He will be ever mindful of his covenant.
  • 20:37 Holy and reverent is his name.
  • 20:40 This time, David will do it right, he will bring the ark to
  • 20:43 the center of his city, being careful to do so in accordance
  • 20:47 with the commandments given to Moses.
  • 20:50 Thus began the process that transformed a Jebusites
  • 20:54 stronghold into Jerusalem, the holy city.
  • 20:59 Then on that day, David delivered first this psalm, "Be
  • 21:03 ye mindful always of this covenant, the Word which he
  • 21:07 commandeth to 1,000 generations, even of the covenant which he
  • 21:10 made with Abraham and of his oath unto Isaac, and have
  • 21:15 confirmed the same to Jacob for a law and to Israel for an
  • 21:19 everlasting covenant."
  • 21:30 In this wedding celebration just outside of Jerusalem, the spirit
  • 21:34 of David endures.
  • 21:37 ♪♪♪
  • 21:54 Yaakov Kleiman: The covenant is an agreement that is totally
  • 21:56 in effect.
  • 21:58 It's like the wedding ring between the groom and the bride,
  • 22:01 so the relationship is between God and mankind and the Jewish
  • 22:05 people, particularly at Sinai.
  • 22:07 The Ark of the Covenant or the--actually, the Lukhot, they
  • 22:10 called the tablets or the Ten Commandments is the
  • 22:13 symbolic ring.
  • 22:14 So, when there's a marriage, even if the ring gets lost or
  • 22:17 temporarily misplaced, marriage is still very vital.
  • 22:23 announcer: Meanwhile, deep within Oren Gutfeld's tunnel,
  • 22:28 something has been found, perhaps a piece of the puzzle.
  • 22:34 male: [speaking in foreign language]
  • 22:41 Oren: [speaking in foreign language]
  • 22:57 Now we need money for a C14 test.
  • 23:02 male announcer: To Gutfeld, even animal bones can be clues,
  • 23:06 further evidence that his tunnels date to the period of
  • 23:08 temple treasure.
  • 23:10 The clues from the copper scroll remain paramount, however.
  • 23:14 His tunnels are located in the Secacah Valley, or Shadow
  • 23:17 Valley, mentioned five times in the scroll.
  • 23:21 Further, some of the treasure is specifically indicated as being
  • 23:24 located under the steps of a tunnel.
  • 23:29 In the journey from the Sinai to Jerusalem, the Ark of the
  • 23:33 Covenant has been the source of life and death now for nearly
  • 23:37 450 years.
  • 23:41 Through deserts and rivers, over mountains and canyons, into the
  • 23:49 very temple of a foreign God.
  • 23:54 Kirsten: So, here we have the Ark of the Covenant in the
  • 23:58 Philistine camp, in the temple of their idol.
  • 24:03 What in the world?
  • 24:05 Jeffrey: Yeah, well, we don't have it, they have it.
  • 24:07 It's in the wrong people's hands because the right people were
  • 24:09 living in sin.
  • 24:11 Bad story to be sure.
  • 24:13 David: We're in the middle of the story, there's more to come.
  • 24:15 Jeffrey: Yes, as we go in search of lost treasure.
  • 24:19 David: That's right.
