  • 00:39 Its fame would summon kings and beckon pharaohs.
  • 00:43 Its glory would ravage foreign gods.
  • 00:50 What was the source of this might?

  • 01:20 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
  • 01:21 Jeffrey Seif: And I am Jeffrey Seif,
  • 01:23 and you, have you ever heard of "Indiana Jones"?
  • 01:26 Well, that's kind of sort of what this is all about.
  • 01:29 We're going for treasures, but it ain't a movie.
  • 01:32 We're gonna take you to the real place in search
  • 01:35 of Jehovah's treasures, fascinating, yeah?
  • 01:37 Kirsten: It is, we're so excited for the series.
  • 01:40 I mean, it's gonna be three programs.
  • 01:42 It's a special little mini-series that we have,
  • 01:45 all about the temple treasures and the ark.
  • 01:48 Jeffrey: The real deal.
  • 01:49 David: It is, right now we begin at a dig near Qumran,
  • 01:52 east of Jerusalem, near the Jordan River.
  • 01:54 Let's go there now.
  • 02:01 male narrator: The Judean Desert in Central Israel,
  • 02:04 never changing, never the same, timeless.
  • 02:10 Archeologist Oren Gutfeld has come here to unravel
  • 02:13 an enigma that has the archeological community puzzled.
  • 02:18 Between 1947 and 1956, the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered
  • 02:23 nearby in the caves of Qumran.
  • 02:28 One particular scroll hints that there are temple treasures
  • 02:31 buried within close proximity to this desert road.
  • 02:36 Oren Gutfeld: We are at the [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 02:37 [speaking in Hebrew] Valley under the fortress of Hyrcania,
  • 02:41 the fortress that was built by the Hasmonean and rebuilt
  • 02:44 by Herod the Great in the end of the 2nd century BCE
  • 02:48 and in the 1st century BCE.
  • 02:51 And we are digging, actually, two tunnels.
  • 02:55 Very, very interesting tunnels that we are digging
  • 02:58 for a few years now.
  • 03:03 male narrator: Rising high above Gutfeld's tunnels
  • 03:06 are the rocky slopes of Mount Hyrcania.
  • 03:10 Atop the mountain rests the remains of a stone fortress,
  • 03:14 one of seven such strongholds
  • 03:15 built in the 1st and 2nd century BC.
  • 03:19 It was a setting fit for a king, complete with an aqueduct,
  • 03:23 a swimming pool, and fresh water, which flowed from the
  • 03:28 spring located 10 miles away in the holy city of Jerusalem.
  • 03:37 David Dolan: I'm up on the Mount of Olives
  • 03:39 and below me is the Temple Mount.
  • 03:42 male narrator: Author, journalist, David Dolan
  • 03:44 moved to Jerusalem in 1980.
  • 03:47 David: The Saudi Arabian government is spending over
  • 03:49 a million dollars putting on a new gold top
  • 03:52 on the Dome of the Rock shrine behind me.
  • 03:55 male narrator: He resides within close proximity to the walls
  • 03:58 of the Old City and reports regularly
  • 04:00 on the events of the region.
  • 04:04 Unrest in the area has been a frequent reality, but for David,
  • 04:08 the opportunity of living in this ancient holy city
  • 04:12 has been reward enough.
  • 04:13 David: Jerusalem, a place that conjures up thoughts
  • 04:16 and emotions of biblical proportions and its very heart
  • 04:20 is located right behind me.
  • 04:23 There is perhaps no other sight on Earth
  • 04:25 that is any more holy or any more fought over.
  • 04:29 It's referred to early in the Bible as Mount Moriah
  • 04:32 and later came to be called the Temple Mount.
  • 04:35 Topographically, it's not much of a mount,
  • 04:38 but the accounts of what happened here
  • 04:40 are more than monumental.
  • 04:43 We're told that at one point in time,
  • 04:45 the Lord God, Jehovah, chose this little tract of land
  • 04:48 to be his very residence on planet Earth.
  • 04:52 The temple built to honor him contained priceless artifacts
  • 04:55 used in worship, a veritable treasure house
  • 04:58 of gold and silver.
  • 04:59 And central to it all was the most holy object the world
  • 05:03 has ever known: the ark of the covenant.
  • 05:06 This is the account of that priceless treasure,
  • 05:08 how it wound up here in Jerusalem and its enduring
  • 05:11 significance in the 21st century.
  • 05:17 male narrator: And the Lord said unto Moses,
  • 05:19 "Make an ark of wood.
  • 05:21 Overlay it with pure gold.
  • 05:24 Make upon it a crown of gold round about and thou shalt
  • 05:27 make four rings of gold and staves and two cherubim.
  • 05:32 And I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat,
  • 05:35 from between the two cherubim, of all the things
  • 05:38 that I will give thee unto the children of Israel."
  • 05:41 ♪♪♪
  • 05:55 Jeffrey: Thank you for sending us all over the Bible world.
  • 05:58 We take you to great places.
  • 06:00 You get to see it and we bring experts.
  • 06:03 David Dolan, a former CBS reporter,
  • 06:07 expert on things Middle East, happy to bring him to you now.
  • 06:14 David: According to the biblical text,
  • 06:16 the story of a covenant with the children of Israel begins
  • 06:19 long before Moses.
  • 06:23 Early in the book of Genesis, the Bible tells us
  • 06:25 of a long journey made by Abraham and his wife Sarah.
  • 06:29 Reaching a foreign land named Canaan,
  • 06:31 God reveals his plan for an extensive nation
  • 06:34 to originate with Abraham's seed.
  • 06:39 male narrator: "And the Lord said, 'Abram,
  • 06:40 look now toward heaven and count the stars
  • 06:43 if thou be able to count them.
  • 06:45 So shall thy seed be.
  • 06:48 I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldeans
  • 06:52 to give this land, to inherit it.'"
  • 06:57 David: Six centuries pass,
  • 06:59 then one day, the voice of God would be heard again.
  • 07:03 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 07:10 David: While attending sheep, Moses would hear a voice
  • 07:12 from a burning bush.
  • 07:14 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 07:19 "Moses, come now, therefore,
  • 07:22 and I will send thee unto pharaoh that thou mayest
  • 07:25 bring forth my people, the children of Israel,
  • 07:27 out of Egypt and this is my memorial unto all generations."
  • 07:38 David: It would take time and God's orchestration
  • 07:40 of 10 dreadful plagues before Pharaoh's heart
  • 07:43 would be softened.
  • 07:45 Ultimately, the 10th plague calls for the death
  • 07:47 of every firstborn child in Egypt.
  • 07:51 However, God informs the Israelites that their children
  • 07:54 will be spared if the blood of the sacrificial lamb
  • 07:56 is spread upon their doorposts.
  • 07:59 For the Egyptians, it proves to be the fatal blow.
  • 08:02 Pharaoh is crushed, the Israelites are freed,
  • 08:06 and the ordinance of Passover established forever.
  • 08:12 [speaking in in Hebrew]
  • 08:21 [singing in Hebrew]
  • 08:31 [singing in Hebrew]
  • 08:40 male narrator: And it came to pass at the end of 430 years
  • 08:44 that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt
  • 08:48 and the children of Israel journeyed from Ramses
  • 08:51 about 600,000 on foot that were men beside children.
  • 09:00 David: Up until this time,
  • 09:02 all of God's covenants have been verbal.
  • 09:04 He's promised, for instance, that there would never again
  • 09:06 be a flood like the one endured by Noah and his family.
  • 09:09 He's made a verbal pact with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  • 09:15 However, it's during this wilderness experience
  • 09:17 that the Israelites would receive their first physical
  • 09:19 manifestation of God's covenant: the Ten Commandments,
  • 09:24 written on tablets of stone that would ultimately be placed
  • 09:27 in the ark of the covenant.
  • 09:30 male narrator: In the 4th century AD,
  • 09:32 the Byzantines designated a mountain in the southern part
  • 09:35 of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula as The Mount Sinai.
  • 09:39 The designation of Jabal Musa, often referred to as Saint
  • 09:43 Catherine's, has been largely unquestioned until recently.
  • 09:48 American adventurers Larry Williams and Bob Cornuke,
  • 09:50 now claim that Jabal Al Lawz in Northwestern Saudi Arabia
  • 09:54 is the site where Moses received the Ten Commandments.
  • 10:01 Still others believe that Har Karkom
  • 10:04 in Israel's Negev Desert is a more likely site.
  • 10:08 There is, in fact, substantial archeological and topographical
  • 10:11 evidence to support the case.
  • 10:13 Italian professor Emmanuel Anati.
  • 10:16 Emmanuel Anati: I arrived to the site by pure mistake.
  • 10:20 I fell in love with this mountain because
  • 10:24 of the landscape, of the rock art, of the monuments.
  • 10:29 It was clear from the very beginning
  • 10:31 that this is a holy mountain.
  • 10:34 So we went on and on for four years,
  • 10:40 doing research on this mountain before we even started thinking
  • 10:46 about this mountain.
  • 10:49 male narrator: Anati is professor of palaeoethnology
  • 10:51 and is renowned for his expertise in ancient rock art.
  • 10:57 Shachar Shilo has accompanied Anati
  • 10:59 on numerous excavations at Karkom.
  • 11:01 Shachar Shilo: We have to remember that this place
  • 11:03 is located very close to Wadi Paran,
  • 11:05 the ancient biblical Wadi Paran is suggested to be one
  • 11:08 of the routes possible for a huge number of people
  • 11:12 to go from Egypt, northern parts, all the way via,
  • 11:16 through, the Sinai Desert, through the Negev,
  • 11:19 and of course, to the Promised Land of Canaan.
  • 11:23 Shachar: As it's mentioned here in the book of Exodus,
  • 11:25 it says, and I'll read it in Hebrew:
  • 11:28 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 11:32 Moses was walking with the flock of Jethro,
  • 11:35 the high priest of Midian,
  • 11:37 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 11:41 and he went to Horeb, the Mountain of God,
  • 11:44 towards the desert."
  • 11:47 male narrator: As the children of Israel journey through
  • 11:48 the wilderness, they are encountered
  • 11:51 by nomadic desert tribes, the Amalekites, Amorites,
  • 11:56 and Midianites, the central mountain in proximity
  • 11:59 to these tribal enemies: Har Karkom.
  • 12:03 Emmanuel: It's a holy mountain,
  • 12:05 full of rock art which has similarities with the biblical
  • 12:09 accounts, with shrines, holy places all over the plateau
  • 12:15 and over 120 temporary villages at the foot of the mountain.
  • 12:22 Emmanuel: Now I must put it clear that,
  • 12:25 to me, this mountain corresponds
  • 12:30 to the biblical description of Mount Sinai.
  • 12:35 Shachar: "And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord
  • 12:37 and he rose up early in the morning and built an altar
  • 12:40 under the hill and 12 pillars according
  • 12:43 to the 12 tribes of Israel."
  • 12:47 male narrator: Today, 12 pillars of stone stand
  • 12:49 in close proximity to Har Karkom and adjacent to the stones,
  • 12:54 the remains of what could very well have been an altar.
  • 12:59 "And the children of Israel sacrificed peace offerings,
  • 13:02 and Moses took the sacrificial blood and sprinkled it on
  • 13:05 the people and said, 'Behold the blood of the covenant which
  • 13:10 the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.'"
  • 13:14 ♪♪♪

  • 14:11 David Hart: After the Lord gave the Ten Commandments
  • 14:12 to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave specific instructions
  • 14:16 on how they were to be stored.
  • 14:18 David Dolan continues our story.
  • 14:22 David Dolan: It wasn't enough that this covenant
  • 14:23 was inscribed in stone.
  • 14:25 In order to ensure that it endured for many generations,
  • 14:29 Moses was next told that the tablets should be placed
  • 14:31 in a special chest.
  • 14:33 In Hebrew, the word is Aron.
  • 14:35 Our English translation, through the Latin word "arca," is ark.
  • 14:39 God made it very clear to Moses just how he wanted
  • 14:42 this holy treasure constructed.
  • 14:46 male narrator: "And they shall make an ark of acacia wood."
  • 14:51 Acacia trees grow in Sinai's desert plains
  • 14:53 and, although the wood is lightweight,
  • 14:55 it is hard and extremely durable.
  • 14:58 The framework of the holy ark will be fashioned
  • 15:00 on this very wood.
  • 15:02 Bezalel is the craftsman.
  • 15:05 His assistant is Oholiab.
  • 15:09 "And Bezalel overlaid the ark with pure gold within
  • 15:13 and without and made a crown of gold to it round about,
  • 15:17 and he cast for it four rings of gold to be set by the four
  • 15:21 corners of it, and he made staves and overlaid them
  • 15:25 with gold and he made the mercy seat of pure gold.
  • 15:30 And the cherubim spread out their wings on high
  • 15:33 and covered with their wings over the mercy seat,
  • 15:36 and Moses commanded the Levites, 'Take this book of the law
  • 15:41 and put it inside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God.'"
  • 15:47 David: You might wonder,
  • 15:49 "Where did all of that gold come from?"
  • 15:51 After all, the children of Israel had been slaves
  • 15:53 in Egypt for over 400 years.
  • 15:56 Well, the Bible says that after a period of time,
  • 15:58 the Egyptians were convinced that Moses was right.
  • 16:02 These Hebrew slaves actually were chosen by their God.
  • 16:06 Fearful of more death and additional plagues,
  • 16:09 the Egyptians gladly offered to send the Israelites
  • 16:12 on their way, granting them as much gold and silver jewelry
  • 16:15 as they desired.
  • 16:18 In addition to the ark, there would be other articles
  • 16:20 fashioned of gold, silver, and brass,
  • 16:23 all to be utilized in worship while in the desert
  • 16:25 and after they ultimately arrived in Canaan.
  • 16:28 The total amount of gold collected from the Israelites
  • 16:31 amounted to over 1 ton;
  • 16:33 of silver, 3 3/4 tons; and of bronze, 2 1/2 tons.
  • 16:41 male narrator: Here, along the northwest shore of the Dead Sea,
  • 16:44 more than 800 biblical and early Jewish documents
  • 16:47 have been found in the caves of Qumran.
  • 16:50 The landscape here is pockmarked with numerous caves,
  • 16:53 one of which in 1952, produced a scroll unlike any other
  • 16:57 that had ever been found.
  • 16:59 Lying against the wall of cave number three
  • 17:01 was an extraordinary copper scroll,
  • 17:04 broken in two, its pieces wedged one on top of the other.
  • 17:08 The find became headline news.
  • 17:12 Hordes of fabulous value were waiting to be found.
  • 17:19 After a meticulous procedure of cutting the copper
  • 17:21 into 23 sections, scholars determined that it listed
  • 17:24 63 hidden treasures, some buried in Jerusalem
  • 17:28 and some in the nearby Judean Desert where Oren Gutfeld
  • 17:32 is presently unearthing his tunnel.
  • 17:34 Hanan Eshel: Here we see a treasure which starts--
  • 17:37 male narrator: Professor Hanan Eshel,
  • 17:39 a leading expert on the copper scroll.
  • 17:41 Hanan: I believe that the treasure mentioned
  • 17:44 in the copper scroll are dealing with the tabernacle.
  • 17:46 They're speaking with the treasures that are described
  • 17:48 in Leviticus and Numbers.
  • 17:52 Those are in Exodus.
  • 17:53 Those are the treasures that Moses and [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 17:57 were doing in the desert after the Exodus.
  • 18:00 We have a very detailed description
  • 18:03 of where they were hidden, and we have a detailed description
  • 18:06 of how big they were.
  • 18:10 Hanan: We're speaking here about an enormous amount
  • 18:13 of silver and gold and some vessels, which are mentioned
  • 18:17 in the rabbinic literature as vessels
  • 18:19 that had to do with the temple.
  • 18:25 male narrator: Tunnels such as this have been found
  • 18:27 and nowhere else in all of Israel.
  • 18:29 The work is tedious, the mission daunting,
  • 18:35 but Gutfeld is resolute.
  • 18:38 He will not be deterred in his search for a meaningful light
  • 18:41 at the end of the tunnel.
  • 18:47 Oren: We were excavating in a tunnel that we started
  • 18:50 to dig only yesterday.
  • 18:52 This is the eastern tunnel of two tunnels
  • 18:54 that we found here previously.
  • 18:57 And the western one was-- we dug in the past
  • 19:00 and now we're going to check this time to see
  • 19:04 if it's going down like the other one.
  • 19:07 male narrator: The western tunnel, which took four years
  • 19:09 to unearth, is located just 200 meters from the one
  • 19:13 in which Gutfeld is presently digging.
  • 19:15 Its entrance has been temporarily covered
  • 19:18 to prevent flooding from the adjoining creek bed, or wadi.
  • 19:21 The tunnel descends at a perfect 35 degrees for 130 meters,
  • 19:26 deep into the very bowels of Mount [speaking in Hebrew].
  • 19:30 Gutfeld's descent is precarious at best.
  • 19:35 Occasionally, niches can be found which help oil lamps
  • 19:38 for those who dug the tunnel over 2,500 years ago.
  • 19:45 Oren: We are halfway in the tunnel and during
  • 19:48 the excavation at this point, we found a few things.
  • 19:55 male narrator: Among the things found were these goat bones.
  • 19:58 Subsequent carbon-14 testing dated the bones to 590 BC,
  • 20:03 very close to the end of the first temple period.
  • 20:09 David: The first temple period is most notably
  • 20:11 associated with the first of three temples
  • 20:13 that would eventually be built on Mount Moriah behind me.
  • 20:16 In our story of the ark, this first temple will serve
  • 20:20 as its eventual resting place.
  • 20:22 But before that can happen,
  • 20:23 the children of Israel must make it to Canaan.
  • 20:26 Moses was told to build a portable sanctuary,
  • 20:29 one that would ultimately be used in a torrid 40-year trek
  • 20:33 through the barren wilderness.
  • 20:35 ♪♪♪
  • 20:45 ♪♪♪
  • 20:55 ♪♪♪
  • 21:03 male narrator: As the journey progresses,
  • 21:05 the tabernacle will be central to the life of the Israelites.
  • 21:08 It will be overseen by priests from the tribe of Levi
  • 21:11 and serve as the home to the ark when it's not in transit.
  • 21:17 "Then the Lord spake unto Moses,
  • 21:20 'Every man of the children of Israel shall camp around
  • 21:22 the tabernacle, some distance from it; each man under
  • 21:26 his standard with the banner of his father's house."
  • 21:30 It was here in a desert encampment that the Israelites
  • 21:34 were transformed from a shapeless mass of people
  • 21:38 into a nation whose progress would be prescribed down
  • 21:41 to the minutest detail.
  • 21:44 The covenant was taking form.
  • 21:50 male narrator: While the digging continues in Gutfeld's eastern
  • 21:52 tunnel, we descend even further into the western tunnel.
  • 22:00 Four years of digging, inch by inch, hoping upon hope.
  • 22:07 What would be found?
  • 22:15 Oren: We're in the end of the tunnel.
  • 22:17 It's really a mystery, why they did such a huge project,
  • 22:21 a huge tunnel, for nothing?
  • 22:24 It's kind of a dead end.
  • 22:27 We tried to dig inside the work,
  • 22:29 but we understood that it's a natural work.
  • 22:32 So it remain a mystery, a real enigma.
  • 22:37 David: Gutfeld is not alone in the search
  • 22:39 for desert treasure.
  • 22:40 Ground-penetrating radar has recently been used here
  • 22:43 at nearby Qumran in the search for additional Dead Sea Scrolls.
  • 22:47 This technique will also be used by Gutfeld in his quest
  • 22:51 to solve the mystery of the western tunnel.
  • 22:56 male narrator: There is little consensus
  • 22:57 as to the exact route the Israelites traveled.
  • 23:01 As for the grumbling, it was deafening.
  • 23:05 "You have brought us out into the desert
  • 23:07 to starve us to death."
  • 23:10 To which from heaven was heard:
  • 23:13 "At twilight you will eat meat,
  • 23:16 and in the morning, you will be filled with bread."
  • 23:20 And so it was.
  • 23:21 Manna by day, a bread-like substance, and quail by night.
  • 23:28 When Moses strikes a rock with his staff, water springs forth.
  • 23:46 male narrator: Sadly, Moses's ultimate dream
  • 23:50 will never be realized.
  • 23:52 In his final days, he will at last see
  • 23:54 the Jordan Valley from a distance,
  • 23:56 but his feet will never touch the Promised Land.
  • 24:02 In his dying moments,
  • 24:03 Moses will hear the voice of God one last time:
  • 24:09 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 24:11 "This is the land which I will give unto thy seed."
  • 24:24 David Hart: This is really just the beginning
  • 24:26 of this story, this powerful story.
