• 01:22 to a faraway place.
• 01:24 I was thrilled to travel around the Mediterranean world.
• 01:27 I just can't believe I was there,
• 01:29 following in Paul's footsteps.
• 01:30 Kirsten: What a place to go.
• 01:32 I mean, how many times have we been?
• 01:34 About four or five times in the Aegean Sea, in that area,
• 01:37 to Greece, following the footsteps of Paul.
• 01:40 We get to lead people there and you were teaching there.
• 01:43 Jeffrey: It's like, "Wow."
• 01:44 David: When we get back from letting our folks swim in the
• 01:47 Mediterranean, they are in awe of where they're at.
• 01:51 So are we.
• 01:53 But we love to see our passengers,
• 01:54 how excited they are.
• 01:56 Jeffrey: Let's go there through the miracle of television.
• 01:57 David: Right.
• 01:58 Right now, let's go to the Aegean Sea with Dr. Seif
• 02:00 teaching on location.
• 02:03 Jeffrey: Paul, on many occasions, spoke about his
• 02:05 journeys and, particularly, he noted that he was marooned on
• 02:08 islands, shipwrecked, and the like, and here we are on the
• 02:12 Aegean Sea right now, making our way from Ephesus where Paul
• 02:16 frequented and then heading over to the Greek mainland.
• 02:20 Right now, I'm heading to Acaa whereas Paul left these parts
• 02:24 and went up to Macedonia, Northern Greece, and then made
• 02:27 his way south, on what was his second missionary journey.
• 02:33 It's interesting, you might recall Paul left Antioch on the
• 02:36 first journey and went by way of Cyprus right into the heartland
• 02:40 of what would be modern Turkey, ancient Asia Minor, during which
• 02:44 time he established a number of congregations.
• 02:47 Well, here now, fresh out of his Jerusalem council meeting with
• 02:50 Barnabas, he's minded to then make his way back to visit
• 02:54 the congregations in Turkey today, Asian Minor of yesterday.
• 02:58 He travels overland.
• 03:00 He goes to Phrygia, the region where he administered before,
• 03:04 and everything goes wrong with him this time.
• 03:06 It seems that in the first journey, you know, the Lord was
• 03:08 opening up all sorts of doors but in this particular trip
• 03:11 the whole thing went bad.
• 03:13 He was a frustrated man.
• 03:14 Luke tells us in the 16th chapter of Acts that he's
• 03:17 frustrated, that all doors are prevented from opening, and then
• 03:21 he has a vision of what theologians call
• 03:25 the Macedonian call.
• 03:27 He's visited by a messenger from Macedonia who says,
• 03:30 "Come and help us over here."
• 03:32 Paul makes his way west further to Troas where he hops on a boat
• 03:36 and he crosses these waters that we're in right now.
• 03:40 He's going to make a stretch by sea.
• 03:43 Paul was such an intrepid, bold sort.
• 03:45 Right now I can feel the spray washing up against me
• 03:48 occasionally as I'm holding on, and these are
• 03:51 reasonably calm waters.
• 03:53 Paul traversed these seas in different conditions.
• 03:55 What a bold sort, as I'd said.
• 03:58 This is a man with dogged determination to tell a story.
• 04:00 Well, he hits the Greek mainland.
• 04:02 He's gonna be at, you know, Thessalonica, Apollonia.
• 04:06 He's gonna make his way south, hugging the eastern seaboard.
• 04:11 What's interesting for my money, as much as he had a difficult
• 04:14 time in Asia Minor, when he gets to Greece, it's like the whole
• 04:19 world opens up for him.
• 04:21 He's in Philippi.
• 04:23 He's going to meet a woman named Lydia there who's going to, with
• 04:26 her household, become converted and he'll start a church there
• 04:30 and a variety of other cities all along the eastern coast.
• 04:33 It seems that the Lord is going to give him remarkable favor.
• 04:36 Paul, as I'd said, is making his way south along
• 04:39 the eastern seaboard.
• 04:40 He's gonna come to Athens in his second journey where he's gonna
• 04:43 get a rather cool reception.
• 04:46 ♪♪♪
• 04:54 Jeffrey: By sea, by land, made no difference.
• 04:59 The man would climb a mountain, he'd traverse a desert, why?
• 05:03 Because Paul was a man on a mission.
• 05:08 "That I might know him and the power of his resurrection."
• 05:13 Mattered not how precarious it was.
• 05:16 The Hebrew for prophet, navi, means to bubble forth.
• 05:19 There was something within this man that needed to come forth.
• 05:23 And so he not only spoke the message, but he spoke it all
• 05:27 over the world.
• 05:29 Pardon me if I'm stumbling along here, but this is rather
• 05:32 precarious up here at Mars Hill in Athens.
• 05:37 Sure Paul's mind, however, wasn't on how precarious
• 05:39 it was in Athens.
• 05:41 I'm sure he was thrilled to be here.
• 05:43 Paul was an interesting character.
• 05:45 He was at home in Greek culture and he was at home
• 05:49 in Jewish culture.
• 05:51 And here, he found himself some 2000 years ago in Athens.
• 05:59 Athens, Greece.
• 06:01 The site of many a place of renown for the Greeks.
• 06:06 The Parthenon over yonder hill, temples scattered about
• 06:10 dedicated to various Greek deities.
• 06:13 Of course, Paul didn't buy into all of that but he was
• 06:16 comfortable in Greek culture.
• 06:19 As comfortable as he was, however, Luke reports
• 06:23 that he was discomforted.
• 06:25 He came to Athens by way of Thessalonica,
• 06:29 and he had to leave Thessalonica swiftly.
• 06:33 He left, and while in Athens, he's waiting for the troop to
• 06:36 catch up to him, he's buying some time, but Luke tells us
• 06:40 that he was troubled.
• 06:42 For, as he meandered about this great city and saw all the
• 06:47 shrines to various deities, his heart was stirred up.
• 06:51 And Luke tells us in the 17th chapter of Acts that he went
• 06:55 into the synagogue and there he reasoned with Jews
• 07:00 and Greek worshipers.
• 07:03 As I've noted in this series, the synagogues would swell up
• 07:08 with women and men of non-Jewish extract who were attracted
• 07:12 to things Jewish.
• 07:14 And so Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles spoke to Gentiles who
• 07:19 themselves were half-baked Jews, and he explained to them how
• 07:23 the Messiah had come, the hope of Israel,
• 07:25 and persuaded them accordingly.
• 07:27 Well, he does much the same, we're told by Luke in Acts
• 07:30 chapter 17, but in addition to that, what's interesting here in
• 07:35 Athens is Paul takes the case out of the shul, out of the
• 07:39 synagogue, and he goes into the marketplace.
• 07:43 And that brings us to now, here, at the famous site of Paul's
• 07:50 Mars Hill sermon.
• 07:53 Luke tells us that he traveled about and looking to build
• 07:55 a bridge to us here, his roundabout.
• 07:58 He said, "Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way
• 08:02 you are very religious.
• 08:04 And here in Athens you have an inscription to an unknown God
• 08:08 and that which is unknown to you, I now make known to you."
• 08:13 And then Paul preached Jesus.
• 08:18 The apostle to the Gentiles spoke to Gentiles, spoke to
• 08:22 Jews, spoke to all the viewers in the interests that folk
• 08:26 might come to know him.
• 08:28 And so in the second missionary journey we encounter Paul
• 08:32 blazing new trails as he's pressing outward and onward
• 08:37 that the world might know Jesus.
• 08:40 ♪♪♪
• 08:50 Jeffrey: The book is called Acts of the Apostles.
• 08:53 Quite frankly, at one level I don't even know why.
• 08:57 I wish there was a book that dealt with the acts
• 09:00 of the apostles.
• 09:02 Luke's volume begins by talking about the apostle Peter but then
• 09:07 the focus narrows, specifically to giving a look at the
• 09:11 movements of the apostle Paul.
• 09:15 Luke begins by underscoring how he was radically converted.
• 09:18 He had a new disposition with his receiving of the Ruach
• 09:21 ha'Kodesh, the Holy Spirit, in the wake of his encounter
• 09:24 with Yeshua.
• 09:26 Then there's a season of development for the man
• 09:28 and then he embarks on a journey.
• 09:30 Commissioned from Antioch, he is to then go forth into the world
• 09:33 at large and advocate for the Messiah who he first
• 09:36 was given to destroying.
• 09:38 Well, trust you know the story.
• 09:41 Our story today looks at one of Paul's journeys
• 09:44 the way Luke did, and that journey is his third.
• 09:48 Starts off overland beginning in Antioch, he then makes his way
• 09:52 into Phrygia region in Asia Minor, modern Turkey.
• 09:56 And then he makes his way to the coast where we are today
• 10:00 in what was then the great city of Ephesus.
• 10:05 How magnificent was that city.
• 10:07 Oh, its grandeur is evidenced here in the theater of Ephesus
• 10:13 which seated 24,000 individuals.
• 10:19 Luke tells us that they convened here once upon a time to
• 10:23 consider the growing movement of Jewish and non-Jewish followers
• 10:28 of the Messiah Jesus.
• 10:31 They didn't just meet here to attend
• 10:32 to that business, however.
• 10:34 This is, in effect, a killing field.
• 10:37 Gladiators hacked it out here, fighting battle royals
• 10:41 to get out alive at the end of the day, why?
• 10:43 To entertain frenzied masses that had blood on their mind.
• 10:48 Well, Paul's company was in here.
• 10:51 They had blood on their mind too, but it was the blood
• 10:53 of Jesus that was shed for humankind.
• 10:56 This was a new religious vision for the Ephesians.
• 11:00 Here, in this city, various deities are represented.
• 11:04 Isis is represented with a temple down the street.
• 11:07 There's different kinds of deities, all of which are
• 11:10 eclipsed by the cult of Artemis, known as Diana.
• 11:15 Now, what happens is there were individuals that plied a trade
• 11:19 by manufacturing accoutrements that were used in her adoration.
• 11:23 And Luke tells us as the gospel penetrates into this culture,
• 11:27 individuals are given to abandoning the cult with the net
• 11:30 result that those individuals that carved out a livelihood by
• 11:35 selling paraphernalia dedicated to Artemis, they start losing
• 11:39 money, their economic interests, and one of those principal
• 11:43 religious merchants is particularly chagrined
• 11:46 and what does he do?
• 11:48 Well, he causes an uproar, causes a fuss, and the whole
• 11:51 city is up in arms according to Luke.
• 11:54 And the net result is that there is, in effect, a riot.
• 11:56 What I wanna do is take you to the 19th chapter of Acts
• 12:01 where Paul's third missionary journey is recounted.
• 12:05 And what's particularly interesting about this journey,
• 12:07 let me just look at it broadly and then narrow the field.
• 12:11 While Paul's journey is told, really, the focus of it is what
• 12:15 was transacted here at Ephesus.
• 12:18 The journey picks up in 18:23 where Luke notes that they
• 12:21 departed, and then in 19, Paul comes to Ephesus
• 12:26 where we are right now.
• 12:28 And what happens is we're told in verse 8 that he goes into the
• 12:32 synagogue and speaks boldly for three months.
• 12:37 Again, Paul was a member of the parushim, a religious leader.
• 12:40 They respected him as such.
• 12:42 He's advocating for new religious ideas, but still he's
• 12:44 retained within the system.
• 12:47 The net result is that individuals are going
• 12:48 to become persuaded.
• 12:50 In fact, we're told as much, that he reasoned and persuaded
• 12:53 concerning the things of the kingdom of God.
• 12:56 Rav Sha'ul, this apostle Paul believed that the Mashiach had
• 13:00 come, the Messiah had come, and his name was Jesus.
• 13:02 And he advocated for that.
• 13:04 We're told in addition to his reasoning prowess in verse 11
• 13:07 that God worked unusual miracles by the hand of Paul.
• 13:11 So Paul commends his message by virtue of his being able to
• 13:14 appeal to the Scriptures.
• 13:16 In conjunction with that, the message is corroborated by signs
• 13:19 and wonders, and this commends what Paul is trying to say to
• 13:22 those that would have perhaps ears to hear.
• 13:26 Luke goes on to then underscore that there were some Jewish
• 13:28 exorcists that were given to expunging demons, and Paul and
• 13:33 them get kind of sideways and Paul shows that the God
• 13:37 working through Paul is greater than all of that
• 13:39 and there's something of a fuss.
• 13:42 And with Paul's supremacy over those Jewish leaders, we're
• 13:45 told--those Jewish exorcists, we're told in verse 17 that
• 13:48 this became known to all Judeans and Greeks dwelling
• 13:51 in Ephesus, that is, dwelling right here.
• 13:53 People knew that something was happening.
• 13:56 There's this inbreaking of the kingdom of God.
• 13:58 Signs and wonders, good Bible teaching, Paul's making inroads.
• 14:02 And we're told that fear, or respect, came upon them all,
• 14:05 and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
• 14:08 That the Jesus movement was growing here.
• 14:11 We're told as well in verse 19, and here's where the trouble
• 14:14 begins that lands us in this place, some 2000 years ago.
• 14:18 We're told that many of those who had practiced these old arts
• 14:22 brought their books and paraphernalia and they burned
• 14:24 them all and there was the total value of the cultic
• 14:30 paraphernalia that was burnt according to the text
• 14:33 was 50,000 pieces of silver.
• 14:36 And then he goes on to note there's a silversmith that
• 14:38 particularly is given over to angst because of all of this,
• 14:41 the loss of business.
• 14:43 And he creates quite a stir.
• 14:45 We're told in 24: "Demetrius, a silversmith, came
• 14:48 and he made silver shrines to Diana," or Artemis.
• 14:52 Same personality there.
• 14:54 And again, Artemis worship was pristine here in Ephesus.
• 14:59 The Ephesians prided themselves in her, among other deities.
• 15:02 There's all sorts here but Artemis particularly.
• 15:05 Well, what happens is, again, this person that's given to
• 15:08 manufacturing accoutrements in that system, calls together the
• 15:11 workers of a similar occupation, in verse 25, and then begins to,
• 15:15 you know, vent invective against Paul and those that advocate.
• 15:20 And the net result is that a riot ensues.
• 15:23 It's fascinating, frankly.
• 15:25 There's swelling discontent.
• 15:27 Now, this attests to the fact that Paul, he didn't just have
• 15:31 a little Bible study at the periphery of the culture.
• 15:34 He engaged it, and you can see momentum going.
• 15:37 In fact, there's a little hyperbole here.
• 15:39 They cry foul, they say, "This troublemaker in all of Asia.
• 15:43 He stirred people up all over all of Asia."
• 15:46 Well, that's a little overstated but the point is,
• 15:48 is that the movement is growing, it's expanding.
• 15:51 The gospel's getting out there.
• 15:53 Well, there's a riot that breaks out in this place and the net
• 15:55 result is that the way it's finally tapered is that they
• 16:00 say, "Listen, the courts are open and what we need to do here
• 16:04 is calm this thing down, lest we invoke the ires of the fathers
• 16:07 of the city and then the police action is brought to bear
• 16:10 in response to it."
• 16:11 One of the things that's underscored and principally
• 16:13 what's underscored in Paul's journey here is the fact that,
• 16:16 as the gospel went forth, there was tension
• 16:19 because Paul engaged the powers that be.
• 16:22 He wasn't just a religious philosopher; he was a bold sort,
• 16:25 he was, this rabbi.
• 16:27 And we'll continue our journey as we study him and follow
• 16:30 "In the Footsteps of the Rabbi from Tarsus."

• 18:13 A lot hasn't; it's the same.

• 18:21 and what Dr. Seif has been teaching and he will teach
• 18:23 throughout the series is centered around
• 18:25 the Mediterranean Sea.

• 18:36 Now, speaking of the Holy Land, let's go to hear Dr. Seif
• 18:40 teaching at Caesarea in Israel on the Mediterranean.
• 18:45 ♪♪♪
• 18:50 ♪♪♪
• 18:56 Jeffrey: Sure that Paul was in a very serious mood when he
• 18:59 set his sights on Jerusalem.
• 19:02 In fact, on more than one occasion he was warned that bad
• 19:05 things were to come but he was not to be dissuaded
• 19:08 from his task.
• 19:10 And what was his task?
• 19:11 His task was to make the Lord known
• 19:13 and to fulfill his destiny.
• 19:15 The Ephesians' elders came out and they said, "Paul,
• 19:18 there's a bad moon rising."
• 19:20 He was not to be dissuaded.
• 19:22 He set sail for Jerusalem, finishing up his third
• 19:25 missionary journey, and he then starts in Caesarea,
• 19:30 Caesarea Maritima, which was a major port city.
• 19:34 It was a Roman home away from home, sporting a grand theater,
• 19:39 sporting a Herodian palace.
• 19:42 Paul lands there and he spends time not in the palace,
• 19:45 he didn't have so many rich friends,
• 19:47 but Philip the evangelist took him in.
• 19:49 He had daughters that ministered and prophesied, and a prophet
• 19:51 came who particularly spoke to Paul and said, "Listen,
• 19:54 you will be bound if you go to Jerusalem."
• 19:58 Paul has heard that on more than one occasion but, in effect,
• 20:00 it means nothing to him because he cares about his mission,
• 20:03 not about his circumstances.
• 20:05 And off to Jerusalem he goes.
• 20:08 ♪♪♪
• 20:13 ♪♪♪
• 20:19 Jeffrey: Luke told us that when Paul went up to Jerusalem,
• 20:22 that the, quote, "brethren received us gladly."
• 20:26 But it's what he said after that that's particularly revealing.
• 20:29 Luke informed that there was some angst about Paul's presence
• 20:32 there and why is that?
• 20:34 Because some of the Jewish brethren in Judea understood
• 20:38 Paul to be advocating that Jews round about the world forsake
• 20:41 Moses in order to follow Jesus.
• 20:44 Now, that was not Paul's message.
• 20:48 Paul's message was that women and men of non-Jewish extract
• 20:51 needn't embrace things Jewish in order to be a good Christian.
• 20:55 It wasn't that people of Jewish extract need to forsake things
• 20:59 Jewish in order to be a good Christian.
• 21:01 Well, they wanted Paul to prove up the point and so he went into
• 21:03 the temple to make some vows and to attend to some Jewish
• 21:07 business that would then evidence that he was still
• 21:10 faithful to the ancestral religion but when he got there,
• 21:14 Luke tells us that some Jewish folk from Asia Minor stirred up
• 21:19 the crowd, with the net result that something of a riot ensues
• 21:24 and Paul's gonna wind up getting arrested.
• 21:27 It's really going to get heated.
• 21:29 And so Paul's gonna find himself thrown in a dungeon for a season
• 21:33 until they can sort out what to do.
• 21:36 ♪♪♪
• 21:45 Jeffrey: There was tension in the air.
• 21:48 Luke tells us that they had to sneak him out of town.
• 21:52 But not just stealthily and they did take him out stealthily, but
• 21:55 how can they hide hundreds of spearmen and regular infantry,
• 22:01 not to mention 70 horses?
• 22:04 Goodness, there's a lot of expenditure of military energy
• 22:08 just to get him out of town, why?
• 22:11 Because the tension was high in Jerusalem.
• 22:14 This criminal, this alleged criminal, was then sent to
• 22:18 Caesarea where he will stand before the governor and give
• 22:24 an accounting for his misdeeds, his alleged misdeeds.
• 22:29 The state presents its case first.
• 22:34 Luke here has the state's witnesses speaking.
• 22:37 If you look in 24, verse 5: "We have found this man a plague."
• 22:44 Well, that's not evidence, that's sentiment.
• 22:47 "We've found him a plague, a creator of dissension among all
• 22:52 the Jews throughout the world."
• 22:55 That's hyperbole, that's overstatement.
• 22:58 But it's not just myth.
• 23:00 There's some reality to that.
• 23:01 He says, "And he is a ringleader of this sect of the Nazarenes."
• 23:08 He will go on and present his case.
• 23:10 Paul will respond in kind and, in effect, say, "Nonsense."
• 23:15 Let me dispel some nonsense.
• 23:17 Typically, Jews are construed as saying thumbs down on Jesus
• 23:23 in the wake of which God is perceived as saying,
• 23:26 Thumbs down on the Jews, and let's go with the Gentiles,
• 23:29 and the Jews, having rejected Jesus in toto, are then left
• 23:34 to the backwaters of God's attention and experience.
• 23:38 That is a mythic telling.
• 23:40 That is not what happened.
• 23:44 When Paul is brought up on charges, the statement is, is
• 23:49 that there's division amongst the Jews about the message
• 23:55 that Paul is advocating.
• 23:57 Paul's talking about Jesus to Jewish people.
• 24:00 Some say yea, some say nay, and it's tense.
• 24:04 There's a rift, to be sure.
• 24:06 When I look at the New Testament, I see a rift amongst
• 24:09 Jews: some Jews weighing in positively, some Jews weighing
• 24:13 in negatively, but it's a Jewish story.
• 24:15 In fact, the accusation goes on to read that this Paul is a
• 24:20 ringleader of the sect of Jewish followers of Jesus.
• 24:25 Let me say this forcefully.
• 24:27 The rabbi from Tarsus was not an ex-Jew; he was a Jew who
• 24:32 believed that the Messiah had come and that his name was
• 24:35 Yeshua, and he was bent on advocating for this Messianic
• 24:40 vision beyond Israel's borders.
• 24:45 He was creative, he was innovative, and the upshot of it
• 24:50 all is that he invoked some ire.
• 24:54 ♪♪♪
• 25:03 Jeffrey: It's not always easy.
• 25:07 Sometimes bad things happen to good people.
• 25:10 Dave, what do you think?
• 25:12 Paul, his world kind of unravels a bit here.
• 25:14 David: What I see from your teaching, he wasn't alone.
• 25:17 He had some help when he was going through these difficult
• 25:21 times in his life: Barnabas, different people,
• 25:24 helping him through.
• 25:25 Jeffrey: Yeah, thank God for the helps, you know,
• 25:27 but he got hurt a lot.
• 25:29 Sometimes when you take those blows, you take 'em
• 25:32 as an individual, it's nice to have people get behind you.

• 25:42 Jeffrey: A lot of people say, "Well, in church, you know,
• 25:44 I've got hurt by people, ministers, music ministers.
• 25:46 I was rejected, dejected, rejected.
• 25:49 I mean, it just doesn't not happen.
• 25:51 Kirsten: Well, I--and it's not funny but it's almost
• 25:55 a little humorous that we think we're being so persecuted
• 25:58 if someone makes fun of what we wear on Sunday.
• 26:01 "Sister so-and-so said, you know,
• 26:03 she didn't like my outfit.
• 26:05 I'm--we're being so persecuted."
• 26:06 I'm, like, "Oh my gosh, what Paul has been walking through.
• 26:09 Tough stuff."
• 26:11 Jeffrey: Well, and there really is a problem
• 26:13 with the human experience.
• 26:15 People are judgmental and sometimes things deteriorate.
• 26:17 That's the bad news.
• 26:19 To your husband's point, David, to you, you know, the good news
• 26:21 is that there's friends and speaking to you, our friends,
• 26:25 I wanna say thank you.
• 26:28 We've taken a few road bumps on the highway of life
• 26:30 on this television concern.
• 26:33 We've seen some folk come and go.

• 26:39 None of us gets through life without getting a few bruises
