• 00:08 Today, we look at two women of the Bible who were very
• 00:11 influential; one for good, one for evil.
• 00:15 ♪♪♪
• 00:25 ♪♪♪
• 00:27 female: I came forth from a man.
• 00:29 female: But I found favor with him.
• 00:31 Eunice: And true success is not measured in wealth
• 00:34 and power, but in the estate of one's heart.
• 00:37 female: I've never been happier and more fulfilled.
• 00:41 female: I raised him up strictly in the faith, and the
• 00:43 law, and the prophets.
• 00:45 female: And now I want to give something back.
• 00:46 female: I believe Elohim meant it to be this way.
• 00:49 female: She's still a cornerstone of wisdom
• 00:50 to the family.
• 00:52 female: But you are always in my heart.
• 00:54 ♪♪♪
• 01:06 David: Shalom and thank you for joining us today.
• 01:07 I am David Hart.
• 01:09 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
• 01:10 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: I'm Jeffrey Seif.
• 01:11 David: We are in our series of "Women in the Bible."
• 01:13 And today, you've heard of her.
• 01:15 Her name is Delilah.
• 01:18 Good or bad?
• 01:19 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Well, not a lot of good with that woman,
• 01:21 you know?
• 01:22 Kirsten: Little deceitful.
• 01:24 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: A tad bit, yeah.
• 01:25 Kirsten: I know.
• 01:27 I always try to pull something positive from the women that
• 01:30 we're talking about, especially ones that are in the Bible,
• 01:33 and this is a hard one to find anything good about.
• 01:36 I mean, she deceived a man of God.
• 01:39 It's not--that's tough.
• 01:40 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's not very impressive,
• 01:42 but we're looking at the good, the bad, and the ugly, and
• 01:45 there's a lot of good, and there's some bad and ugly,
• 01:48 and this is ugly.
• 01:50 Kirsten: At least we can learn from her.
• 01:51 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yeah, we'll begin with her.
• 01:52 I mean, it's--I just think there's value in taking a look
• 01:55 at the book and I think girls today and boys today, women and
• 02:00 men, need to look at examples in biblical literature that show
• 02:05 the good and the bad, and it gives us a window
• 02:07 on who we ought to be and how we ought to be.
• 02:10 Kirsten: And not be.
• 02:12 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yeah, it's just not that hard.
• 02:13 We mix up all this gender stuff and roles
• 02:15 and there's so much confusion.
• 02:17 It's rather simple if you take a look at the book.
• 02:20 David: We take you to Israel now to hear Delilah's story.
• 02:23 Let's go there now.
• 02:27 Delilah: He told me he loved me, yet three times lies
• 02:32 poured from his lips.
• 02:34 I looked like a fool before my people.
• 02:38 But finally, after nagging the brute night and day,
• 02:43 Samson told me the secret to his great strength.
• 02:50 Don't think evil of me.
• 02:53 I can't deny I'm profiting from this business venture, and I do
• 02:56 care about Samson, although love is a pretty strong word.
• 03:04 We both have needs and we both use each other for our needs.
• 03:09 In the end, I'm probably saving his life.
• 03:13 The Philistines would eventually kill him in battle, but now,
• 03:17 they'll probably lock him away faithfully In prison, and peace
• 03:20 can finally reign between our two peoples,
• 03:23 the Philistines and the Israelites.
• 03:27 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Just finished raining in the Gaza.
• 03:31 Gaza's right off the Mediterranean Sea and we do get
• 03:34 downpours every now and again, and with the break in the rain
• 03:37 we're getting some work done.
• 03:39 This young lady's putting out the wash.
• 03:42 This fella's taking care of the roof.
• 03:44 He'd do well to be careful.
• 03:46 People can slide down on wet stone.
• 03:49 Everybody's working and that's good.
• 03:50 Well, sorta. This woman was working here.
• 03:53 She was plying the world's oldest trade.
• 03:58 Reminds me of a story back in Judges chapter 16.
• 04:02 In the first verse, we're told:
• 04:04 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 04:08 "And Samson went to Gaza," and there, we're told,
• 04:13 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 04:17 "and there he saw a woman."
• 04:21 You know, Samson's not the only person in the world that ever
• 04:24 got in trouble with the sight of a woman.
• 04:26 Seems that he had a particular weakness, however.
• 04:30 We're told here, right afterwards, that she was,
• 04:33 in Hebrew, "zonah," that she was a prostitute.
• 04:39 After noting that, we're told,
• 04:41 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 04:43 "that he went into her."
• 04:46 And the rest is history.
• 04:47 Well, that's his story.
• 04:50 Well, in so many ways, on so many days, that's the story of
• 04:53 so many others: men who wreck themselves by being bested by
• 04:59 the darker side of their own natures, by their inability to
• 05:03 get their impulses bridled.
• 05:06 Better to get a bride to tend to this business.
• 05:09 Samson, however, had a different mind on the matter.
• 05:12 We're told in the beginning of the chapter that he's in Gaza.
• 05:16 Then we're told later on he's somewhere else in a valley and
• 05:20 his eyes alight upon another woman, a Philistine,
• 05:24 a member of the Philistine.
• 05:27 Philistines came and settled the area.
• 05:29 They hugged the coastal plain, and there was a woman that
• 05:32 started hugging Samson.
• 05:35 The rest, as I noted, is history.
• 05:38 Did he fall in love with her?
• 05:40 What is this thing, "falling in love"?
• 05:42 You can fall down steps, you can fall down a ladder.
• 05:44 Seems to me, that love is best construed as a decision:
• 05:49 someone opts to make a woman the object of his affection,
• 05:54 a woman opts to make a man the object of their affection.
• 05:59 Better it is that there be no sexual contact before a contract
• 06:04 that binds them together, takes care of them into the future as
• 06:07 well as the fruits of the union.
• 06:10 Well, Samson has no time to be bothered by
• 06:11 talk like that, does he?
• 06:13 'Course not. He himself wants it.
• 06:15 He wants it now.
• 06:16 What happens, however, he thinks, like a little fly,
• 06:19 zzzz-zzzz, he thinks he landed on that flower,
• 06:23 that he was going to get a meal.
• 06:26 He looked at her and said, "That's what I'm talking about.
• 06:27 I wanna get to know her."
• 06:29 He thought he was gonna get a meal.
• 06:30 What happened is, he wound up becoming a meal in the process.
• 06:34 It all closed up around him.
• 06:36 She was doing the bidding of men that were too coward to take
• 06:41 care of Samson conventionally.
• 06:44 You know the story, that Samson was a big man, he was a strong
• 06:47 man, and the Philistine were unable to get the better of him.
• 06:52 So, if it doesn't work conventionally,
• 06:55 let's look for plan B.
• 06:57 Parenthetically, it reminds me of what happens around here
• 07:00 on too many ways, and too many days.
• 07:04 What do I mean by that?
• 07:05 Here I am standing in Israel.
• 07:07 Forces round about say, "Well, we've tried to fight these
• 07:10 Israelis conventionally, rifles, tanks, airplanes.
• 07:14 We don't do so good this way.
• 07:16 Let's go for plan B.
• 07:18 Let's do terrorists, let's go after civilians, and let's hide
• 07:21 behind women and children and let's get the world
• 07:24 all riled up.
• 07:27 I don't wanna get too riled up.
• 07:28 This isn't a political conversation.
• 07:30 It's a story here, however, about how the Philistines
• 07:34 use sexual appetite to bring a man down.
• 07:38 They're whittling him down, time and time again.
• 07:42 What's the secret to your strength?
• 07:44 Well, the secret to his strength is his relationship to his God.
• 07:51 The reason why I say that is finally, after a period of
• 07:54 wearing him down over time, he says to her,
• 07:57 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 08:01 "That I have been a Nazarite from my mother's womb."
• 08:09 My friends, there's a hedge of protection, walking under God's
• 08:13 covering in a relationship with him.
• 08:15 Samson lost that covering.
• 08:17 He lost that hair and that was the beginning
• 08:19 of the end for him.
• 08:20 And so it is when individuals walk outside
• 08:22 of God's covenant covering.
• 08:24 It can be the end for them as well.
• 08:26 We're gonna continue on here and look at women in general
• 08:29 and look at issues related to sexuality, in particular.
• 08:34 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Life has been described as a journey.
• 08:37 Christian ministers like talking about taking that step of faith.
• 08:42 Judaism talks about halakha, the religious way.
• 08:45 It comes from a Hebrew verb, halak, which means to walk.
• 08:50 Hey, I'm a dad with teenage sons, trying to teach my boys
• 08:54 how to walk.
• 08:56 You know what I tell 'em?
• 08:58 Told my son, Jacob, at 19, I said, "I can spend 19 years
• 09:01 trying to raise you right and I know that the wrong girl could
• 09:04 undo that in about 19 seconds."
• 09:08 Doesn't take that much for someone to get distracted.
• 09:10 In fact, that's why in Proverbs, Solomon, and talk about getting
• 09:16 distracted, Shlomo, Melech Israel, Solomon,
• 09:21 known for his hakham, his smarts.
• 09:24 It's amazing how someone so smart can be so stupid.
• 09:29 This is a man that made shipwreck of a life
• 09:32 and he can talk about it.
• 09:33 In the 7th chapter, he gives voice to how the males of the
• 09:37 species can get led away.
• 09:41 He notes here in chapter 7, verse 6 that there was someone
• 09:46 whom he perceived from the window of a house.
• 09:50 "A young man," in verse 7, "someone devoid of
• 09:52 understanding," who's beckoned in by a loose woman.
• 09:57 And let me just say that when I think of this problem, it's a
• 10:02 problem with the males of the species, it's a problem with the
• 10:05 females of the species, particularly in the modern world
• 10:10 where we are so overly sexualized.
• 10:12 The stimulation is everywhere.
• 10:15 The images, the vision, it just pounds individuals.
• 10:18 Well, in the biblical sense, in Proverbs, we're told that wisdom
• 10:22 is crying aloud in the street, beckoning individuals to hear
• 10:26 what biblical wisdom has to say.
• 10:30 And what are we told here?
• 10:31 We're warned about the wrong kind of person, the wrong kind
• 10:36 of relationship, and here in this story, the 7th chapter, a
• 10:40 young man is beckoned in by a woman who says in verse 18,
• 10:45 "Come let us take our fill of love until the morning."
• 10:50 'Course, no one's taking in a fill of love until the morning.
• 10:54 They're taking in a fill of lust until the morning.
• 10:57 I know individuals that have had a lot of beds
• 11:00 but they haven't had a lot of rest.
• 11:02 The soul would find rest if they had a good relationship, not
• 11:04 just one where they can satisfy these mutual needs and interests
• 11:08 on a temporary basis.
• 11:10 We're told here of a warning in verse 23.
• 11:14 Here, the text says that man does not know that that affair
• 11:19 is going to cost him his life.
• 11:21 And that woman doesn't know that if she wants to play that hand
• 11:25 and exert that kind of leverage, that she is hurting herself
• 11:28 in the process.
• 11:30 Both people think they're getting something out of it.
• 11:31 In the biblical text, both people are coming to ruin.
• 11:35 And there's a warning here that's given in the text and I
• 11:37 want to extend it to you.
• 11:39 "Therefore, listen to me," in verse 24, says the writer.
• 11:43 "Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways," or if it's a
• 11:47 woman who's being enticed to his ways, "Don't be this way."
• 11:52 At the end of the day, a woman that needs to lower herself like
• 11:55 this, cheapens herself in order to get some kind
• 11:57 of attention and affection.
• 11:59 It doesn't need to be that way.
• 12:01 Better to be modest and discreet and let love come at its own
• 12:04 time rather than hurry the process.
• 12:07 He says here, "Don't turn aside to this way."
• 12:11 We're told in verse 26 that she, this licentious person, has
• 12:15 wounded many and we're told, in verse 27, that "her house is the
• 12:20 house to hell, and many descend into the chambers of death."
• 12:26 Let's not be a casualty in this war.
• 12:29 Let's not give ourselves over to cheap thrills
• 12:31 and deviant behavior.
• 12:33 We all have various needs and interests.
• 12:35 Better to walk with God, it seems to me, and let him bring
• 12:37 the right kind of relationship to bear, rather than speed up
• 12:40 the process and hurt ourself in the process.

• 13:25 I'm learning, as we all are, and someone that was a good teacher
• 13:30 was the grandmother of Timothy in the Bible.
• 13:34 She was an instructor. We don't know much about her.
• 13:36 You probably haven't studied her.
• 13:38 Here's the story of Lois.
• 13:40 ♪♪♪
• 13:45 Eunice: I can never say enough good things
• 13:47 about my son, Timothy.
• 13:49 That's him as a boy when I was teaching him the alphabet.
• 13:53 Oh, he was the brightest and the most well-behaved child a mother
• 13:57 could ever hope for.
• 14:00 I raised him up, strictly in the faith, the law, and the
• 14:03 prophets, as my mother Lois had taught me.
• 14:06 And as he grew up to become a man, he never departed
• 14:09 from our teachings.
• 14:11 It is a mother's dream to see her child become successful and
• 14:15 true success is not measured in wealth and power,
• 14:18 but in the estate of one's heart.
• 14:21 My mother taught me that.
• 14:24 She's still a cornerstone of wisdom to the family and as I
• 14:27 see my son sharing his testimony of salvation through our
• 14:30 Messiah, Yeshua, words cannot express
• 14:35 my joy and gratification.
• 14:39 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: It has been said that it takes a man
• 14:42 to build a house.
• 14:44 'Course it does.
• 14:46 These bricks are heavy.
• 14:48 These logs are heavy as well and it takes a man
• 14:50 to put it together.
• 14:51 Well, it takes a man to build a house.
• 14:55 Likewise, it's been said that it takes a woman to build a home.
• 15:01 And why is that?
• 15:03 Sticks and bricks, this is one thing, but building up the
• 15:07 generation is another thing.
• 15:11 And while this can be done in a matter of days or weeks, this
• 15:16 work here takes place over a matter of years and it's mother
• 15:21 who's principally responsible.
• 15:24 So much of what the children become,
• 15:27 they become because of mom.
• 15:30 [speaking in Hebrew]
• 15:32 look, aleph mem tav, the Hebrew word "emet," truth.
• 15:42 They learn the truth in so many ways.
• 15:44 It's mother who teaches, educates in how to write,
• 15:48 how to think, how to behave.
• 15:51 I believe it's for this reason that, in the Hebrew Bible,
• 15:54 wisdom, hakham, smarts, is personified as a female.
• 16:00 Wisdom speaks, "she says this, she does that,"
• 16:05 in the book of Proverbs.
• 16:07 Shlomo, Solomon, knows a lot about wisdom.
• 16:10 In fact, his book starts off in the prolog: "My son, forget not
• 16:14 your father's teaching, and forsake not
• 16:18 your mother's instruction."
• 16:20 Holding on to mom's instruction is a tad bit firmer
• 16:24 and why is that?
• 16:25 Again, because of so much of what the child becomes, they
• 16:29 become because of the imprint that mom leaves upon them.
• 16:33 In this series, we're looking at women in general and here we
• 16:38 wanna look at the contribution in the education
• 16:42 of the young in particular.
• 16:44 Francis Xavier said, "Give me your children for
• 16:48 the first 7 years.
• 16:50 Anyone can have them afterward."
• 16:52 Another wise person said once that "the hand that rocks the
• 16:56 cradle rules the world."
• 16:59 In a moment, we're going to go to a famous rabbi, Rav Shaul,
• 17:04 commonly referred to in some circles as the apostle Paul.
• 17:08 And we'll enter into the world of some conversation he has with
• 17:12 his favorite talmidim, a disciple named Timothy.
• 17:17 And we'll hear Paul remind Timothy that what he was he
• 17:21 became in large measure because of his mother
• 17:23 and his grandmother.
• 17:25 And in the process of looking at that story, we'll consider women
• 17:28 and how it is they make such a contribution in their children
• 17:33 and in the world at large.
• 17:34 ♪♪♪
• 17:44 ♪♪♪
• 17:48 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: When people find themselves hard pressed,
• 17:52 at the ragged edge of life, they tend to articulate things
• 17:58 that have great value to them.
• 18:00 Their thoughts run deep, their emotions run strong, and within
• 18:06 their cerebral cortex they frame thoughts that so much give
• 18:13 definition to what that person is all about
• 18:15 and what they think.
• 18:17 It's for that reason in part that when in foxholes, when
• 18:21 facing an uncertain future, a soldier is more apt to write a
• 18:26 letter to his mother than to his father, and why is that?
• 18:31 Discomforted as the soldier is, the tendency is to draw upon
• 18:36 memories and emotions of that person that came to him
• 18:41 in times of trouble.
• 18:43 You know, there's an old song, "When I find myself in times of
• 18:45 trouble, mother Mary comes to me."
• 18:48 Well, mother Mary, mother Sally, whatever.
• 18:51 The reason why I mention this at this juncture is because when
• 18:54 the apostle Paul is right up against the grave, when he
• 18:59 writes 2 Timothy, he says as much: "I've fought the fight,
• 19:02 I've finished the race."
• 19:05 He gives his valedictory speech.
• 19:07 He knows he's at the ragged edge.
• 19:10 And he finishes the note, signing off to Timothy and
• 19:13 saying, thank you very much, but he begins the letter, drawing
• 19:18 upon memories of a time when he first encountered Timothy.
• 19:24 Oh, he's thrilled that Timothy has been so very loyal,
• 19:28 so very faithful.
• 19:30 When you've lived life for a while, you tend to place
• 19:32 a premium on character over charisma.
• 19:35 Loyalty is in very high demand and very short supply.
• 19:40 When noting his sterling character, Paul reminds Timothy
• 19:48 where he got it from.
• 19:49 In fact, he reminds himself.
• 19:51 In chapter 1, verse 5, he says: "When I bring you to
• 19:55 remembrance, Timothy," who had a Jewish mother, by the way.
• 19:59 He says, "When I bring you to remember, I remember your
• 20:03 genuine faith that is in you and it's a faith that is in you that
• 20:07 was inculcated in you," he says, "first by your grandmother Lois
• 20:13 and then by your mother Eunice."
• 20:15 And he says, "And I am persuaded that it is in you also."
• 20:21 With the passage of time, Paul has encountered
• 20:23 many insincere people.
• 20:25 He goes on to say, as he finishes his introduction, in
• 20:28 verse 15 he says, "All alike in Asia have abandoned me."
• 20:33 They've all turned away.
• 20:35 "But, Timothy, you have been resolute."
• 20:38 Timothy was resolute in part because of things that were sown
• 20:42 into him when he was younger.
• 20:46 Hence, herein we see an example of the value of a woman.
• 20:52 That is to say that Paul credits Timothy being who he is because
• 20:59 of the women in his world that guided him.
• 21:04 Doesn't mean that they just sat down and opened up scrolls.
• 21:07 There's some of that because these women opened up
• 21:09 the Scriptures.
• 21:11 It's tragic today, people think, "Well, I'll just send the
• 21:13 children off to a rabbi or to a Sunday school teacher in a
• 21:17 church, and it's incumbent upon those professionals to
• 21:21 give my kid a measured religious education."
• 21:25 That thought really doesn't exist in the Jewish world.
• 21:28 Not this world.
• 21:29 It's imperative that the family give the child the virtue.
• 21:34 It's imperative that the mother inculcate the religious seeds
• 21:37 into the next generation.
• 21:40 These women did a good job.
• 21:44 When we move on in the 3rd chapter, Paul here is
• 21:50 encouraging Timothy and us by association to continue in the
• 21:55 things that are learned.
• 21:57 What can happen with the passage of time, owing to pressing
• 22:01 exigent circumstances, things can impinge upon us, we can
• 22:04 experience pressures and difficulties that we didn't
• 22:08 count upon.
• 22:10 But it's good that we draw upon core values in answering the
• 22:14 troubles of the day and it's mother in so many ways
• 22:18 who instills those values.
• 22:21 Well, here, Paul says, "You must continue in the things that you
• 22:24 have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom
• 22:28 you learned them."
• 22:31 Certainly, you have a tacit inference here to remember your
• 22:34 mother's example.
• 22:37 The reason why I say "tacit," is because what's explicit, what's
• 22:40 noted then, is from whom you learned what, he says in verse
• 22:44 15: "That from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures,
• 22:50 which are able to make you wise for salvation."
• 22:54 Well, we know that mother guided the fellow.
• 23:00 In the process of so doing, there's things that he learned.
• 23:04 He's going to encounter Paul, he's going to encounter Jesus.
• 23:09 This is a fellow raised by a Jewish mother and a non-Jewish
• 23:11 father who's gonna come to faith in the Jewish Messiah, Jesus.
• 23:17 Before Jesus ever gets a hold of him, his mother did, and he was
• 23:20 a wonderful human being.
• 23:23 Life can grind away at people, it can grind us into powder.
• 23:28 It's good to have a biblical foundation and it's good to
• 23:31 appreciate a woman who helps guide the boys and girls to be
• 23:36 the kind of people that God would have them to be.
• 23:40 ♪♪♪
• 23:50 ♪♪♪
• 23:58 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: It could be said that it takes a lot of
• 24:00 chutzpah to do a series entitled "She Shall be Called Woman."
• 24:06 The word "chutzpah" is a Jewish word for guts.
• 24:09 It is gutsy because the culture is so pathetic, you know.
• 24:13 There's so much stupid confusion, nonsense, fantasy,
• 24:18 delusion, about men and women.
• 24:22 It's utter nonsense.
• 24:25 When I look at the book, I see stories of Adam and Eve,
• 24:29 not Adam and Steve.
• 24:31 It's just not that difficult.
• 24:35 I believe there's value in taking a look at the book,
• 24:38 discovering roles, discovering primary purpose, and we take you
• 24:43 there, we care to share.
• 24:44 I wanna thank you for those of you that help us tell the story.
• 24:49 It shouldn't have to be told to look at the primary role,
• 24:52 but it is what it is.
• 24:54 We do what we do. God bless you.

• 25:00 Kirsten: I, like you, and we all think, all three of us,
• 25:03 we're lifetime learners.
• 25:06 So I appreciate today that you gave us an example of what not
• 25:09 to do and an example of what to do.
• 25:13 Who not to be like, who to also look for to be like.
• 25:16 Lois and Eunice are--
• 25:18 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: You know, it's a mother and daughter team
• 25:20 that were responsible for tutoring, which raises a whole
• 25:24 other issue, by the way.
• 25:26 I'm happy to sit at a table and learn from a woman.
• 25:30 The silencing of women's voices in the name of religion
• 25:35 is problematic.
• 25:36 I can see why people chafe at that in modernity, but you see
• 25:41 an example where Paul commends these women for their
• 25:44 contribution to the religious education of a young man.
• 25:47 Kirsten: And you said something I thought
• 25:48 was so wonderful.
• 25:49 You said the nurturing of the next generations.
• 25:53 And I think both of us, we're a team in that.
• 25:58 Maybe time has progressed a little bit, of nurturing our
• 26:01 children, especially our grandchildren now,
• 26:04 is so vitally important.
• 26:05 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yes, and I think, you know, Saint Francis
