Episode: “Counselors and Managers”
A study of Abigail demonstrates that women are designed to be more than lovers and mothers to bear and care for children. Women have significant intuitive capabilities that contribute beyond the bedroom and nursery toward mankind’s success. The Hebrew Bible illustrates the idealized woman as an entrepreneur, an enterprising businesswoman who ably manages household affairs for herself and her family.
Series: “She Shall Be Called Woman (2023)”
In this series, Dr. Jeffrey Seif opens the Hebrew Scriptures to focus on God’s wonderful creation of Man’s human complement: Woman. David and Kirsten Hart join into discussions as we look the different roles of women, like wives, mothers, counselors, managers, educators, and queens.

  • 19:30 going to bring wealth into the house.
  • 19:32 She doesn't just spend it.
  • 19:34 She is valuable, she's a worker, she's entrepreneurial,
  • 19:38 and she contributes to the war effort that way and so many
  • 19:41 other ones.
  • 19:42 Verse 11 we're told that the heart of her husband trusts in
  • 19:45 her and that she will have no lack of gain.
  • 19:48 I love the word for gain here, in part because it's the same
  • 19:51 word that's used in the Hebrew Bible for plunder.
  • 19:57 What do I mean by that?
  • 19:58 In Old Testament times, Israelite males would be called
  • 20:01 upon to don helmet and sword and shield and
  • 20:04 defend home and hearth.
  • 20:06 They'd go off to war, and in the process of so doing,
  • 20:08 by virtue of their being successful,
  • 20:10 they would acquire goods.
  • 20:13 They would come upon resources that were not their own but were
  • 20:16 deemed the spoils of war.
  • 20:19 When the text here says that she will bring gain to him,
  • 20:23 it means she brings spoils of war--
  • 20:25 that is, that she brings into the family system to the man
  • 20:29 that which he is unable to get himself.
  • 20:32 He didn't earn it himself, but it just comes at the testimony
  • 20:35 to what she's all about.
  • 20:37 Well, we go on.
  • 20:38 In verse 16 we're told that she considers a field and buys it.
  • 20:42 And this gives rise to the fact that this woman is a woman who
  • 20:46 is empowered to make decisions.
  • 20:48 She has hacham, she has smarts.
  • 20:51 She's not just the love slave, she doesn't just sheepishly and
  • 20:55 docilely follow the orders that her husband barks out,
  • 20:59 but she's a woman of means, she's a woman of understanding,
  • 21:02 and she's empowered within the family in order to make
  • 21:05 family decisions.
  • 21:06 And so she invests her energies and she brings wealth
  • 21:09 into the family.
  • 21:10 And not only that, in verse 20 we're told that she extends
  • 21:13 herself to the poor, that she's just not all about herself.
  • 21:17 She's successful, she acquires, and thus she has resource to
  • 21:22 help those less fortunate than her.
  • 21:25 Says elsewhere that she looks at the time to come without fear.
  • 21:29 It's because of who she is and how she takes care of her
  • 21:31 business, she has stability and security,
  • 21:35 and is able to then to be more kindly disposed toward others.
  • 21:38 We're told in verse 23 that her husband is "noted in the gate."
  • 21:43 The gate, of course, is where the men would meet,
  • 21:46 the elders, and the reason why he's noticed,
  • 21:48 according to Rashi,
  • 21:50 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 21:53 1040 to 1105 AD was a famous Jewish sage and he opined the
  • 21:58 reason why he was known in the gates is because he was
  • 22:01 so well dressed.
  • 22:03 And the reason why he was so well dressed is because his wife
  • 22:06 took care of him so well.
  • 22:08 Again, you have a good wife here and she takes care of you.
  • 22:11 You know, some have mistakenly said that a
  • 22:13 dog is a man's best friend.
  • 22:14 I think not.
  • 22:17 If a man will treat a woman right,
  • 22:19 a woman will be loyal to a man, and here
  • 22:22 this man stands out by virtue of her attentions.
  • 22:25 Well, the text goes on, and it closes on a beautiful note.
  • 22:30 In verse 30,
  • 22:31 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 22:35 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
  • 22:40 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 22:44 but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised."
  • 22:49 She respects the Lord, she reverences him,
  • 22:53 she walks under his guidance and care and by virtue of so doing,
  • 22:58 this is a woman of great value.
  • 23:01 And I love the way the text closes.
  • 23:03 He says in verse 31,
  • 23:06 [speaking in Hebrew]
  • 23:09 Give her the fruit of her hands."
  • 23:12 Hey, listen, we'd do well to find a woman like this and give
  • 23:16 her the credit she deserves because a woman like this moves
  • 23:21 the world and helps a man to be successful in this life.
  • 23:29 David: I'm sure you've heard the term "your better half."
  • 23:31 Well, that is the case for me, and I think for
  • 23:34 you too, Dr. Seif.
  • 23:36 We've got some good women in our lives to help us with
  • 23:39 all that we do in our lives.
  • 23:41 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Behind every good man
  • 23:42 is a better woman.
  • 23:43 Now, a lot of people on TV,
  • 23:45 you know, they say things about their spouse but then when the
  • 23:47 cameras are off, when it's just them,
  • 23:49 they're fighting and bickering and going different directions.
  • 23:51 You guys, you're a team.
  • 23:53 My wife and I, we're a team.
  • 23:54 You know, Barri, I say she's the way,
  • 23:57 the truth, and the wife.
  • 23:58 I mean, she is that Proverbs 31 type and I'm so blessed
  • 24:01 to have her.
  • 24:03 Kirsten: I am thankful for something that you brought to
  • 24:05 light which I've never heard speaking of the Proverbs 31
  • 24:09 woman, which to me has always seemed like who can even
  • 24:13 get that high?
  • 24:14 You just feel like you never can succeed like that,
  • 24:17 you know, the gold standard, but I like what you said about her
  • 24:20 being an entrepreneur, and I appreciate that.
  • 24:23 That's almost a buzz word that women can relate to now,
  • 24:28 for you saying about she buys a field and sells it.
  • 24:31 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Right, she can roll up her sleeves and be
  • 24:33 involved in the land of the living.
  • 24:34 She's just not some love slave in the kitchen and in the
  • 24:38 bedroom pregnant, you know?
  • 24:39 That--and religious people falsely assign a role.
  • 24:43 I think it says more about the people that are assigning the
  • 24:46 role than it does about what biblical literature really
  • 24:49 is saying.
  • 24:50 If that's the idealized woman in biblical literature,
  • 24:53 and it is, well then, she is.
  • 24:57 She's got a lot going for her. She's a business woman.
  • 24:59 She's a woman of means and brains.
  • 25:02 She's just not beautiful, she's beautiful inside and out.
  • 25:06 Kirsten: You had mentioned earlier in the program,
  • 25:08 we learned about Abigail with David and where you
  • 25:11 said she has brains.
  • 25:12 Abigail was a smart girl because you also mentioned--
  • 25:15 we listened to what you said, that women wanna be loved,
  • 25:18 but men want to be respected.
  • 25:20 That's good.
  • 25:22 And David was respected by Abigail and that spoke volumes.
  • 25:26 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yeah, and it's interesting that Abigail's
  • 25:27 husband, the name there alludes to fool.
  • 25:30 You have the contrast there.
  • 25:32 There's the brain in the woman and the pain in the man,
  • 25:35 that, yeah.
  • 25:37 It's a fantastic story.
  • 25:40 You know, individuals look at the Bible and wanna paint the
  • 25:42 picture of a woman being slotted a domestic,
  • 25:45 servile, minimal role.
  • 25:49 And while there are males of the species that are game to foist
  • 25:52 that, that doesn't do justice to what biblical literature
  • 25:56 actually is saying.
  • 25:57 Kirsten: And I have to say, I did enjoy being pregnant.
  • 26:01 I do enjoy being a wife, and I do enjoy my time in the kitchen.
  • 26:04 But I also like the buying a field.
  • 26:06 You know, and obviously you're saying,
  • 26:07 like, a woman's role necessarily isn't being,
  • 26:10 well, I'm not sure you'd say barefoot and pregnant,
  • 26:12 and cooking, and that kind of thing,
  • 26:13 but like, some women still do like that.
  • 26:15 I love that, yeah.
  • 26:16 Dr. Jeffrey Seif: Yes, Barri has an MBA,
  • 26:18 my wife, and she's very good at business.
  • 26:22 She also has a PhD in biblical studies.
  • 26:25 Now, that's my second time round marrying.
  • 26:27 I lucked out twice.
  • 26:28 My first wife, may she rest in peace,
  • 26:30 died of ovarian cancer.
  • 26:32 Patty had three graduate degrees.
  • 26:34 She took care of the family finances, you know?
  • 26:37 I mean, I'm a pretty strong guy, but I'm not some tyrant who runs
  • 26:41 the castle.
  • 26:43 You know, power is shared and you give her, her due.
  • 26:48 And that's what the author of Proverbs 31 does and advocates
  • 26:54 that we do as well: give her, her due.
  • 26:57 Kirsten: That is a good partnership.
  • 26:58 David: It is. We're not done with this series.
  • 27:00 There's more women in the Bible, important women,
