• 00:09 This week we consider our Lord's teaching on marriage,
• 00:12 being true to our word, and being gracious
• 00:14 as we continue "Sar Shalom: Prince of Peace."

• 01:17 David Hart: We are so glad you've joined us today,
• 01:18 I'm David Hart.
• 01:20 Kirsten Hart: I'm Kirsten Hart.
• 01:21 Jeffrey Seif: I am Jeffrey Seif,
• 01:23 and I hope you'll be glad you joined us today too.
• 01:26 We're opening up the Lord's Word,
• 01:28 and we're going to hear and we're going to see it
• 01:31 where the Lord weighs in on marriage.
• 01:33 And goodness, we need some help in the world today
• 01:37 to learn about that, don't we?
• 01:39 David: I know some folks at our church,
• 01:41 when they hear that there's a sermon on marriage,
• 01:43 they don't even come, but there's so much more today
• 01:46 than just talking about marriage.
• 01:48 There's a lot going on today--
• 01:50 Kirsten: With relationships, I mean, everyone needs
• 01:52 to learn more about how to be in good relation with someone else.
• 01:55 Jeffrey: Yes, and we want to do these things
• 01:57 till death do we part.
• 01:59 I know that when I first filmed this in the Galilee in 2009,
• 02:03 my wife Patty was with me, may she rest in peace.
• 02:08 She's gone on to her reward and the Lord's graced me with Barri,
• 02:12 I've remarried since some years now.
• 02:15 And would that we all learn the secrets to happy marriages.
• 02:20 It just--it settles us, it does so much for us.
• 02:24 And we really hope that this program in particular
• 02:27 is going to do something really good for you.
• 02:30 David: Right now, let's go up to the Galilee
• 02:32 as we continue "Sar Shalom."
• 02:36 male announcer: And there followed him great multitudes
• 02:38 of people, old and young, husbands and wives.
• 02:45 Perhaps there were some gathered on the mount
• 02:48 that day who wondered, would their marriage last?
• 02:53 What about divorce?
• 02:55 And now, the Lord had made it very clear marriage is sacred,
• 03:02 and except for infidelity is binding for a lifetime.
• 03:10 A man shall cleave unto his wife and they shall be one,
• 03:14 bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.
• 03:24 Jeffrey: It's called a get.
• 03:28 Some people want to get a, quote, get.
• 03:32 And pray tell, what's a get?
• 03:35 It's a Hebrew term for a bill of divorcement.
• 03:40 Some people marry for an ideal, they think they got a raw deal,
• 03:44 and they go searching for a new deal.
• 03:48 Here, the Lord himself weighs in on that, saying,
• 03:52 "You've heard it was said to the men of old."
• 03:55 You know, and what's said to the men of old?
• 03:58 He said, "Whoever divorces his wife,
• 04:01 let him give her a get and tell her to get going."
• 04:06 There's some legitimate way to just dissolve this corporation.
• 04:14 I've been married approaching 24 years now to my wife Patty.
• 04:20 Kids have grown up and moved on.
• 04:24 We've had more than one fight on occasion,
• 04:25 divorce was never an issue.
• 04:28 And now that the kiddos have kind of sort of moved on
• 04:32 and I look at her again,
• 04:34 frankly I'm just glad that we weathered the storms
• 04:36 and we're there.
• 04:37 And imperfect as I am, I believe and she'd agree as well that
• 04:41 we're in the process of falling in love all over again.
• 04:46 How sad it is that many never make it to that moment.
• 04:50 And why is that?
• 04:52 Well, when they hit road bumps in the highway of life,
• 04:55 they look to get out of dodge.
• 04:56 And what they do is they find some way to sanction
• 05:00 it legally or religiously so they can cut loose
• 05:03 and get on down the road.
• 05:05 While people can do that
• 05:07 and while it's acceptable in the culture,
• 05:09 you're going to see with me as we read Scripture
• 05:12 how it's not altogether acceptable to the Lord.
• 05:15 And he said,
• 05:16 "But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason
• 05:22 except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery."
• 05:27 The word "sexual immorality" in the Greek is pornea,
• 05:30 it's where one gets pornography.
• 05:34 In as much as people are rather casual
• 05:36 about getting in and out of love,
• 05:39 getting in and out of the commitments
• 05:40 that go along with love.
• 05:42 Jesus says, "Not so quick, guys.
• 05:45 If anybody wants to initiate divorce
• 05:47 except for issues of sexual immorality,
• 05:51 that's not kosher, that's not legitimate, really it isn't."
• 05:55 Of course, the issue with sexual immorality is the one partner,
• 05:59 they themselves have broken the union.
• 06:04 They entered into a contract where the two became one flesh,
• 06:06 but now they've become another one flesh.
• 06:09 In which case then, you haven't initiated the divorce,
• 06:12 it's already happened.
• 06:13 You just decided to name it and claim it and move on.
• 06:17 Egregious as that and divorce here is legitimized,
• 06:21 though it's not the preference still.
• 06:26 What do I understand Jesus to be saying here as elsewhere?
• 06:30 Better it is to cultivate the bonds of union.
• 06:34 Previously, he underscored that brothers,
• 06:36 we have got to learn to get along
• 06:38 because anger can be very harmful in rupturing community.
• 06:44 Similarly, various issues can come up in marriage
• 06:47 and people can kind of wash
• 06:48 their hands clean of it, you know?
• 06:51 You talk to one preacher, he doesn't grant it.
• 06:53 Well, find somebody else.
• 06:54 Like a doctor, go get a second opinion,
• 06:57 and you can and you will.
• 06:59 You'll finally get what you're looking for.
• 07:02 But what's Jesus looking for?
• 07:05 He's looking for us to go the distance
• 07:07 from the womb to the tomb.
• 07:10 I haven't made it all the way yet,
• 07:12 but 24 years into the process or approaching 24 years,
• 07:16 I can tell you it gets better as it gets longer.
• 07:20 Learn to love and forgive, and let's keep our marriages sacred.
• 07:27 ♪♪♪
• 07:37 ♪♪♪
• 07:43 male announcer: And the Lord spoke unto them,
• 07:46 "You have heard that it was said to those of old,
• 07:50 you shall not swear falsely,
• 07:53 but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.
• 07:56 But I say to you do not swear at all,
• 08:01 neither by heaven, for it's God's throne,
• 08:04 nor by the earth, for it is his footstool,
• 08:08 nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king.
• 08:13 Nor shall you swear by your head
• 08:15 because you cannot make one hair white or black.
• 08:20 But let your yes be yes, and your no no.
• 08:26 For whatever is more than these is from the evil one."
• 08:36 Jeffrey: The term "fellowship" harks to a bunch of fellows
• 08:39 in the same ship actually rowing together.
• 08:44 And it's important that each one does their part, is it not?
• 08:49 I think in different ways and on different days,
• 08:52 Jesus was really serious about weighing in on the need
• 08:56 for people to perform their obligations.
• 08:59 We saw in the previous segment how marriage is a commitment,
• 09:03 it's an oath, and it's biding in perpetuity.
• 09:06 That's the preferred scenario, of course,
• 09:08 for a variety of obvious reasons.
• 09:11 Similarly, individuals have to be counted upon
• 09:14 to be able to perform the commitments
• 09:17 in a variety of other human endeavors as well.
• 09:22 I'm sure that Yeshua,
• 09:23 I'm sure Jesus had a stern look in his face
• 09:26 in underscoring the need to be forthright,
• 09:30 honest, earnest, diligent to perform commitments,
• 09:33 and not have to embellish it all with a lot of swearing.
• 09:38 Jesus says in Matthew chapter 5, verse 33,
• 09:41 "You've heard it was said, 'You shall not swear falsely.'"
• 09:44 And he goes on to say,
• 09:46 "But I tell you, hey guys, don't even swear at all."
• 09:51 And he makes a point and finishes it, saying,
• 09:53 "Listen, let your yes be yes and your no be no."
• 09:59 This, friends, is extremely important.
• 10:02 The Hebrew word for "truth," emet,
• 10:07 comes from the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, aleph,
• 10:10 the middle one is mem, and the last letter is tav.
• 10:15 And together, it's the word "emet,"
• 10:17 which means truth in Hebrew,
• 10:20 which speaks of, in effect, the sum of all things.
• 10:23 When we speak, we should speak the truth.
• 10:26 And the sum of all things is that there should be congruity
• 10:29 between what we say and the way that we perform.
• 10:33 I've told my boys if you have a commitment
• 10:37 to meet a girl for a date
• 10:38 and you're supposed to be there at 6 o'clock,
• 10:41 be there at 6 o'clock.
• 10:43 If there's a young lady or another guy
• 10:45 that's supposed to meet you at 4 o'clock
• 10:47 and they say they're going to be there at 4,
• 10:48 if they don't show and this becomes habitual,
• 10:51 you need to construe that as a personality fluke.
• 10:53 And why is that?
• 10:55 It's because it's not beyond the pale of reason
• 10:57 to expect that people will actually perform what they say.
• 11:02 And hear me on this, rather hear Yeshua on this,
• 11:06 then as now, we live in a world
• 11:08 where people all too often don't perform what they say.
• 11:13 And hence, in order to be taken seriously,
• 11:15 "I swear to God, I swear this and swear that."
• 11:17 If someone's at a place
• 11:18 where they need to embellish their word
• 11:21 with all of this extra energy, something's wrong.
• 11:24 That person in their own mind,
• 11:26 they realize there's something of a character deficit.
• 11:29 In order to be taken seriously, they've got to pump it up
• 11:32 with swearing by this and that and so forth and so on.
• 11:35 It ought not to be that way.
• 11:38 The Lord went on record telling his disciples,
• 11:41 and me and you by association, then,
• 11:44 that there has to be congruity between what we say
• 11:49 and the way that we perform.
• 11:52 Or to put it in modern vocabulary,
• 11:54 a man's word should be his bond, so too with a woman.
• 11:59 Be that kind of person, friend, that keeps your word.
• 12:02 And by virtue of your so doing,
• 12:04 the Lord will be pleased because he said,
• 12:06 "Don't swear either by heaven or by earth.
• 12:09 Let your yes be yes and your no be no."
• 12:13 Friends, let it be so.
• 12:15 ♪♪♪

• 13:27 David: Much of this series takes place in Tiberius,
• 13:30 which is the Sea of Galilee.
• 13:32 And Kirsten and I would both say that in the whole world,
• 13:35 this is one of the best places that we love to go,
• 13:38 and we love to take you.
• 13:39 I love what you say about--
• 13:40 Kirsten: Well, we have so many ministry friends
• 13:42 that we all work with in that Tiberius area.
• 13:46 And now we say--when we get there, they say,
• 13:48 "Welcome to Jesus's neighborhood."
• 13:51 And it's just homey, it's cozy.
• 13:53 He lived there, he fished there, he had friends there.
• 13:57 So much to do in that area, we'd love for you to go with us.
• 14:00 Now, let's go back to the neighborhood with Dr. Seif.
• 14:23 announcer: For untold generations,
• 14:25 it had all seemed so natural,
• 14:28 an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
• 14:32 But now the Lord was saying quite the opposite.
• 14:36 "Go the second mile, regardless of the circumstance.
• 14:40 Give to him who asked you, and then give him more."
• 14:59 Jeffrey: The Latin expression "Lex Talionis"
• 15:02 harks to a term for the law of retaliation.
• 15:08 You can't take that from people.
• 15:11 Or there's the biblical expression,
• 15:12 an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
• 15:15 We find it in the Old Testament, we find it in ancient law codes.
• 15:20 And here Jesus begins by harking to it,
• 15:23 "You've heard that it was said to the men of old,
• 15:25 an eye for an eye.
• 15:27 By golly, you can't let people push you around,
• 15:30 you've got to stand your ground."
• 15:34 I grant that there's something to be said for that, of course.
• 15:38 Similarly, once here in Israel, I learned an expression
• 15:41 that I want to commend to you because I think it sums up
• 15:44 what the Lord is talking about here as he goes on.
• 15:47 I heard the expression here,
• 15:49 "Blessed are the flexible, they will not be broken."
• 15:54 Isn't it the God's honest truth
• 15:55 that we've got to learn to bend a little bit?
• 15:58 We can't just forever be standing up for our rights
• 16:01 and letting the world know that they've done us dirty.
• 16:05 I mean, there are enough people that'll do you dirty in life
• 16:08 that it's going to make you bitter,
• 16:09 not better if you always have that attitude,
• 16:11 "By golly, I'm going to tell them."
• 16:14 It seems to me--seems never mind me, what do I know?
• 16:17 It seems to the Lord we do well
• 16:19 to be a little flexible, little gracious.
• 16:22 Sometimes we have to bear up under petty insults.
• 16:25 You know, turn the other cheek,
• 16:28 being wiling to hence go the extra mile.
• 16:31 Which by the way, it's noted here in the passage
• 16:33 if someone beckons you to go one mile, go two.
• 16:37 It harks to an old Roman practice
• 16:39 where the Roman military used to be able to just have
• 16:42 civilian folk carry baggage for them for certain distance.
• 16:46 And they might not want to do it,
• 16:47 but they're kind of forced into service.
• 16:50 Here people are being forced into thing,
• 16:52 and Jesus is telling them do a little bit
• 16:55 of a--of an attitude check, but never mind being forced.
• 17:01 There's a Hebrew expression "mitzvah," means commandment,
• 17:05 and it is applied to being a blessing.
• 17:09 The Lord would have his people to do mitzvah, to do blessings.
• 17:13 And hence, if you see someone in need,
• 17:16 instead of waiting to be beckoned into the service,
• 17:20 why not of your own accord take the initiative
• 17:22 to roll up your sleeves and just go help?
• 17:27 And if we're beckoned to go where we don't wish to go
• 17:31 and we're unable to,
• 17:33 you know, remove ourselves from that situation,
• 17:35 why not go with something of good attitude
• 17:38 and be a witness to the love of God?
• 17:41 This is what the Lord is talking about here.
• 17:43 He's talking to individuals like me
• 17:46 and you, he's talking to them,
• 17:47 they didn't live in a perfect world.
• 17:50 There were abusers in that world.
• 17:52 There were mean people in that world, manipulators,
• 17:54 players in that world, and not everyone
• 17:57 can just extricate themselves from all that.
• 17:59 Sometimes we've got to learn how to function
• 18:02 in a less than perfect environment.
• 18:06 Rav Shaul, Rabbi Paul, in his own way said,
• 18:10 "If we're only going to deal with righteous men,
• 18:12 we're going to have to leave this world."
• 18:15 His point was there's plenty of imperfect people around.
• 18:20 And that's a challenge for us to be perfect.
• 18:23 Doesn't mean that our performance never wanes,
• 18:26 but we want to be resolute in our decision to be loving
• 18:29 and kind, difficulties with others notwithstanding.
• 18:33 That's a lesson that Paul taught, that Jesus taught.
• 18:36 That's a lesson that I want to commend to you,
• 18:37 mindful of their words here from the Sea of Galilee.
• 18:43 Kirsten: We are imperfect people.
• 18:46 We're not perfect like the Savior was.
• 18:49 But he's also giving us some lessons today
• 18:52 you've been referencing. And earlier, you referenced,
• 18:54 "Let your yes be a yes and a no be a no."
• 18:57 Like we just need to be lined up with what we say.
• 19:01 Our actions line up with what we say, yes?
• 19:03 Jeffrey: And there's so many that
• 19:05 are disingenuous in this world,
• 19:06 that they don't represent themselves truly.
• 19:11 People say things, they don't mean it, you know?
• 19:14 There's--sometimes, I wonder why people at weddings say,
• 19:17 "Till death do we part."
• 19:18 I don't know if everybody even means all that.
• 19:21 It's just tragic.
• 19:22 David: When you say that,
• 19:24 do you mean Christians or non-Christians?
• 19:25 Jeffrey: People in general.
• 19:27 Well, Christian people are shackled with a base nature.
• 19:31 So, we're not a different species,
• 19:34 we just have a different worldview.
• 19:36 And we have--hopefully we do, and hopefully we have--
• 19:39 we are Christians by virtue of our being born again as such.
• 19:42 David: Believers, yes.
• 19:43 Jeffrey: And then we still have to be faithful
• 19:45 to the biblical testimony.
• 19:46 A lot of people that say they're Christians are not Christ-like.
• 19:49 This Sermon on the Mount stuff is Christ-like stuff.
• 19:54 Kirsten: Please, forgive me if I'm wrong,
• 19:57 but isn't some of the Old Testament eye for eye,
• 19:59 tooth for tooth,
• 20:01 it is kind of like in a loving way,
• 20:04 yes, get back at someone.
• 20:05 So, if someone has wronged you, you almost have the right
• 20:09 to not--but there was a lot of that in the Old Testament.
• 20:13 Jesus was a little different with what he was saying here.
• 20:15 Jeffrey: There's a maxim, measure for measure,
• 20:18 or the law of retribution, you know, it's a boomerang,
• 20:22 whatever you throw is going to come back at you.
• 20:24 And people operate by that, but that's one of the things
• 20:27 that differentiates us from other people,
• 20:31 that is that we're less adversarial,
• 20:34 we're given to being peacemakers.
• 20:36 And of course,
• 20:38 this section of biblical literature opens up with,
• 20:40 "Blessed are the peacemakers," those that are inclined
• 20:44 to not go to war, disinclined to be adversarial.
• 20:48 And in order to have that inclination,
• 20:51 one has to have the capacity to bear insults and abuses,
• 20:57 because surely they come.
• 20:59 David: Jesus told us to turn the other cheek.
• 21:01 And I wonder sometimes if that makes us look like
• 21:04 we're weak as believers.
• 21:07 Jeffrey: Well, it makes people look weak, period.
• 21:09 I know for me, I don't--I haven't mastered that one yet.
• 21:13 You know, I'm old police, you know, and the times,
• 21:16 it's hard for me just to bear with.
• 21:20 And you know, I've had to work on that.
• 21:22 David: You have to listen to that still,
• 21:24 small voice that says, "Turn the other cheek."
• 21:26 Kirsten: Right, and walk away.
• 21:28 Jeffrey: Yeah, and I'm inclined to see it
• 21:29 as dealing with petty insults rather than let the world
• 21:33 run over you like a freight train.
• 21:36 And that's how I differentiate a little.
• 21:39 You know, I don't, contrary to some, on the basis
• 21:44 of turn the other cheek, be sheepish and docile,
• 21:48 that understanding prompts some to be--to prohibit going to war,
• 21:55 or to be a solider, to being a police officer.
• 21:58 You know, I have biblical faith and virtue,
• 22:00 but I have a police career.
• 22:02 And some would think, "Well, no, you can't do both."
• 22:05 And I don't live with that.
• 22:07 I understand the Lord to say we're to bear with
• 22:09 petty insults, not just to let the world pillage and plunder.
• 22:13 Kirsten: I think a word you brought up in today's teaching
• 22:15 was graciousness, give grace, so do you want to do that?
• 22:20 You know, should I even do that right now?
• 22:23 There's that tendency, but it's giving grace to that person.
• 22:26 It's not necessarily weakness.
• 22:28 The strength is in the holding back.
• 22:29 Jeffrey: Yeah, I think it's a very good point.
• 22:31 You know, I'm out there in the streets and police,
• 22:33 you know, it's my first order of business
• 22:35 is to be gracious and kindly disposed.
• 22:37 If someone's going to take it to another level,
• 22:38 then a cop's got to do what a cop's got to do.
• 22:41 But our inclination should be to be gracious
• 22:43 and kindly disposed to be sure, good point.
• 22:45 David: And I think when we take that action,
• 22:47 that's when we're blessed through Yeshua.
• 22:50 We'll be right back.

• 24:00 One of the words we use in Israel every day
• 24:03 is the word "toda."
• 24:05 It means thank you.
• 24:07 So, as somebody gives you something
• 24:09 or as you request something,
• 24:10 you can say the word "toda," thank you.
• 24:13 Now, if somebody gives you something really special,
• 24:16 like a beautiful gift that means a lot to you,
• 24:18 you can add the word "raba," which means great.
• 24:22 So, great thanks, toda raba.
• 24:26 So, next time somebody gives you something
• 24:28 or you ask for something and you receive it,
• 24:30 you can say, "Toda," or, "Toda raba."
• 24:36 David: When we go to Israel, we love to do a little Hebrew
• 24:39 to the local folks.
• 24:41 They kind of like when they know we're Americans,
• 24:44 but they love to hear kind of what Sarah taught today.
• 24:47 Kirsten: Toda raba, thank you very much.
• 24:50 And wherever we go, we always like to say, right, thank you.
• 24:53 Just learn thank you, and we deal with a lot of Arabic
• 24:57 people over in Israel, in our hotels,
• 24:59 and shukran is a nice way to say thank you in Arabic.
• 25:03 Look at us, multilingual.
• 25:05 Jeffrey: It's nice to be gracious in any language,
• 25:07 and that's what the Lord's talking about in all this.
• 25:09 And graciousness is in such high demand and such short supply.
• 25:14 Kirsten: But it's a good word.
• 25:16 And I know I did this earlier in the program,
• 25:20 but sometimes we want to fight back.
• 25:23 And you--I love what you said, the blessing comes
• 25:25 when we hold back and we give more grace.
• 25:27 I mean, that's what the Lord did.
• 25:29 Jeffrey: Yes, and let me just say
• 25:30 before we get out of this, thank you for your grace
• 25:32 toward us for keeping us on the air.
• 25:34 We mean that sincerely, thank you, thank you, thank you.
• 25:37 I'm not asking right now, I'm just saying thank you
• 25:39 for the giving and your care to help us to share.
