Episode: “The Triumph of God in Human History”
God turns our mourning into joy, as vividly demonstrated in this concluding program. The Jews are bidden to commemorate God’s saving power and goodness in an annual celebration, Purim. We should all celebrate God’s goodness, thereby banishing the passing clouds of pain and despair.
Series: “Esther (2017)”
For Such A Time As This
The Book of Esther is one of the Jewish people’s favorites. In this eight-program television series, Dr. Jeffrey Seif explains its details, and points out that, like Esther herself, we Believers may be alive for such a time as this.

  • 01:00 Chaim is on location along with his wife Deana.

  • 01:05 Now, let's wrap up the story of Esther.
  • 01:08 The future finally looks bright
  • 01:11 for Mordecai, Esther and the Jewish people.
  • 01:20 "Pur", a simple cube like object.
  • 01:24 Pur had been used to determine the date of death
  • 01:28 for every Jew in the Persian Empire.
  • 01:31 Now, one year later, Mordecai considers a brighter day.
  • 02:14 With the roll of the dice it was decreed that on a certain day
  • 02:17 a certain people would be annihilated.
  • 02:22 Sounds like something from World War II
  • 02:25 when I think of genocide
  • 02:27 but it's a story that goes back to the Bible
  • 02:30 when in Shushan, the capital, there was a wicked man Haman
  • 02:36 who threw the dice and determined with it
  • 02:39 that a people would come to an end.
  • 02:43 Tragic, horrible that someone could be so wicked.
  • 02:48 But even in a dark world like that,
  • 02:51 God raised up someone and brought about deliverance for the people
  • 02:55 with a net result is that those who had grief
  • 02:59 were able to experience their grief, their sadness turned into gladness.
  • 03:04 It says it explicitly in chapter 9, verse 22.
  • 03:07 I'll read it in my version.
  • 03:09 take a peak in yours...we're told,
  • 03:36 What a story here.
  • 03:37 Individuals that thought all is lost got a new lease on life.
  • 03:45 And that my friends is the Gospel story in a nutshell, that
  • 03:51 individuals who through sin and circumstance can be finished.
  • 03:56 By virtue of what Jesus did,
  • 03:58 individuals are able to secure a new lease on life.
  • 04:04 Oh that's the story in the book of Esther
  • 04:06 in which case, here, what happened is
  • 04:09 God raised up a woman.
  • 04:11 The woman's name was " Hadassah ", "Esther",
  • 04:16 and she was placed for such a time to affect a very great deliverance.
  • 04:23 It could be that there are some within the sound of my voice
  • 04:26 that need a deliverance.
  • 04:28 I don't know what that would mean to you.
  • 04:31 But speaking to you with the Bible on one hand
  • 04:33 and coming to you from the Mount of Olives here in Israel,
  • 04:39 I want to remind you that there is a God who lives.
  • 04:43 There is a God who can turn your sorrow into rejoicing.

  • 06:57 We're in a bunker from the 1948 Israel War of Independence,
  • 07:01 in the Galilee.
  • 07:03 We're talking about BDS,
  • 07:04 Boycotts, Divestments and Sanctions,
  • 07:06 and about God's desired heart to bless both the
  • 07:09 Sons of Ishmael and the Sons of Isaac,
  • 07:11 all the sons of Abraham.
  • 07:14 This thing "Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions",
  • 07:17 it is a propaganda tool designed not to help,
  • 07:21 not to really bring peace, but to further divide.
  • 07:24 We have enough division.
  • 07:26 We want to come together, and as Believers, bless.
  • 07:29 If we want to be like Esther,
  • 07:31 and we want to take a stand and be brave, I would say,
  • 07:35 pray and take action like Esther.
  • 07:37 What did she do?
  • 07:38 She prayed.
  • 07:39 She went and she prepared herself.
  • 07:41 She fasted.
  • 07:43 That's what we need to do,
  • 07:44 and then take action in our governments,
  • 07:46 and we will see God's blessing come on our governments,
  • 07:49 and that the Peace that He prophesied will come.
  • 08:52 From my earliest memories as a child I recall the celebration of Purim.
  • 08:58 We read in the text how it was decreed
  • 09:01 the Jews should celebrate the holiday,
  • 09:03 and celebrate it we do from generation to generation.
  • 09:07 We used to eat special foods.
  • 09:09 There was this hamantashen and this food that we'd eat to remind us of the
  • 09:14 hat that Haman was alleged to have worn.
  • 09:16 We have special celebrations
  • 09:18 in the synagogue on the holiday,
  • 09:22 different things that we do to remember the event.
  • 09:25 Before getting away from the event,
  • 09:28 an event where Esther gets a considerable amount of recognition
  • 09:31 and rightly so, but before we get away from her in the story
  • 09:35 I want to alight upon Mordecai some.
  • 09:38 And the reason why I want to do that
  • 09:40 is because the text does that.
  • 09:42 In the 10th chapter the book finishes off by talking about Mordecai,
  • 09:48 a fellow who we know became great.
  • 09:51 After Haman's demise we see Mordecai's rise
  • 09:54 where all of Haman's holdings, and they were vast,
  • 09:57 went under Mordecai's superintendency.
  • 10:01 So this was a man who like Esther went from rags to riches.
  • 10:06 Sometimes when people fair well
  • 10:08 they forget those that are less fortunate,
  • 10:10 but not so with Mordecai.
  • 10:13 Let's consider the way the story ends.
  • 10:16 We're told of him,
  • 10:33 Why was he great?
  • 10:35 Why was he esteemed?
  • 10:36 Well we're told here in the text,
  • 10:55 The text tells us that Mordecai, as great as he became, he remembered
  • 11:00 those that were less fortunate.
  • 11:04 And as I noted, some people when they elevate in life
  • 11:07 they're so anxious to leave their humble origins
  • 11:10 they forget the people,
  • 11:12 they forget the race,
  • 11:13 they forget the social strata
  • 11:15 of those that are less fortunate.
  • 11:18 Not so with Mordecai.
  • 11:20 As he became great he remembered the needs of his brethren.
  • 11:26 And so it is we're told as we get away from the story
  • 11:28 that there was a man who was held in high esteem
  • 11:32 because of his sharing,
  • 11:34 because of his caring.
  • 11:36 I hope some of you will take that as a challenge
  • 11:38 as you ask yourself the question,
  • 11:40 How you can conceivably use your influence and resource
  • 11:44 to be a blessing in the world?
  • 11:48 Mordecai was like that and he's remembered here in the biblical text,
  • 11:52 and we're told that those of us that are like that,
  • 11:55 we're going to be remembered too.
  • 11:58 Certainly by virtue of our accepting Jesus
  • 12:00 we have our name written in the Lamb's Book of Life
  • 12:03 and our good works follow us to the other side of the grave
  • 12:07 when we awaken to hear the words,
  • 12:09 "Well done good and faithful servant."
  • 12:19 For insightful perspectives on Israel and Bible prophecy

  • 12:53 that we go to Israel twice a year.
  • 12:56 And you may be sitting there today thinking,
  • 12:58 I could never take a trip to Israel,
  • 13:01 for whatever reason.
  • 13:03 We used to think that and God finally opened
  • 13:05 up the door for us to go to Israel.

  • 13:09 on a Zola Levitt Tour.

  • 13:14 why these are sitting in front of us,
  • 13:16 and why we're not eating them.
  • 13:18 I'm wondering the same thing too.
  • 13:20 Dr. Jeffery Seif talked about these cookies, " Hamantoshen "
  • 13:24 that are eaten during the Feasts of Purim.
  • 13:28 One of the reasons we love to go to Israel,
  • 13:31 at least I do,
  • 13:32 is the food!
  • 13:33 The food is wonderful.
  • 13:35 Last trip we were there almost three weeks,
  • 13:36 I only gained 3 pounds.
  • 13:38 So one could say it's a wonderful way to
  • 13:40 loose some weight in Israel.
  • 13:42 Now, let's go to our Hebrew lesson with Deana Malespin.
  • 13:51 Shalom Havarim "Hello Friends"
  • 13:54 Another important word that you need to learn in Hebrew
  • 13:57 for the celebration of Purim is Hagigah ,
  • 14:01 which means, "Celebrate"!,
  • 14:03 because that's what we like to do
  • 14:04 is celebrate during the holidays,
  • 14:07 eat lots of good food,
  • 14:09 the Hamantoshens or the Osnei Haman ,
  • 14:12 and dress up and read the Megillah , the Scroll of Esther
  • 14:16 and have a really special time with family and friends.
  • 14:21 Thank you Deana.
  • 14:22 Kirsten and I today have so many things
  • 14:24 we're so grateful for and we celebrate.
  • 14:27 One of those reasons is
  • 14:29 we just found out that we are going to be grandparents.
  • 14:31 Very exciting.
  • 14:33 So to that we say,
  • 14:34 Hagigah !
  • 14:35 Let's Hagigah !
  • 14:36 Celebrate the fact that we're going to be grandparents,
  • 14:39 and today on Zola Levitt Presents
  • 14:42 we Hagigah the fact that God redeemed His people.
  • 14:46 He saved them once again.
  • 14:48 Yes.
  • 14:49 Now, let's go to the wrap up of Esther
  • 14:51 and then we'll have Dr. Jeffery Seif
  • 14:53 teaching for us in Israel.
  • 15:31 The people of Israel live.
  • 15:34 It's not to say there aren't forces bent on
  • 15:36 trying to see that we don't, but we do.
  • 15:39 And the reason why we live is because God lives.
  • 15:42 And that's the reason we sing a song, Jews that is,
  • 15:45 from here in Israel and all over the world,
  • 15:48 Am Yisrael Chai "The people of Israel live".
  • 15:52 Well the story, the book of Esther takes place against the backdrop of
  • 15:56 someone endeavoring to see to it that we don't live.
  • 16:00 You can recall there's Haman, something of a wicked sort,
  • 16:05 bent on destroying the Jewish people.
  • 16:08 He hated Mordecai, and not just Mordecai but
  • 16:12 by extension all Jews everywhere.
  • 16:15 And he utilized his influence to enact a scheme to annihilate the Jews,
  • 16:22 and so dispatched from the Capital of Shushan were couriers that took
  • 16:27 messages all over this vast Media-Persian Empire
  • 16:33 extending from India on the one hand,
  • 16:36 all the way to Ethiopia on the other.
  • 16:39 Jews were scattered about but it was decreed into law that a day would be
  • 16:45 set aside to destroy the Jewish people.
  • 16:49 Seems, however, that difficulties in the world aside,
  • 16:52 God always has His own.
  • 16:56 In the book of Esther we're told there was a fellow Mordecai
  • 17:00 who pushed his charge forward, her name was " Hadassah " in Hebrew.
  • 17:05 It's a beautiful name for a beautiful girl.
  • 17:07 It comes from the word for a particular kind of tree, a myrtle tree.
  • 17:11 Coming here from the Mount of Olives,
  • 17:13 where there's greenery round about,
  • 17:15 Hadassah arguably had a little olive tint in her skin,
  • 17:19 a little something special.
  • 17:21 In fact she's so special that she has worked her way into the Jewish psyche
  • 17:26 for loveliness and caring and sharing so much so that in Israel here
  • 17:29 there's even a hospital named after her called Hadassah Hospital.
  • 17:34 Well her caring and sharing came to bloom in the story
  • 17:37 in the book of Esther when she was
  • 17:40 fortuitously elevated to become queen.
  • 17:43 Speak of rags to riches, here's a girl who not just because of her beauty but
  • 17:48 because of an inner beauty she had something a little extra,
  • 17:52 and she caught the attention of a king named Xerxes.
  • 17:56 The net result is that she becomes queen and then
  • 18:00 when in the empire Haman enacts his scheme to destroy the Jews
  • 18:06 she's well placed to utilize her influence to do something about it.
  • 18:12 Oh I'm reminded of when Mordecai petitions her "please dear you have to"
  • 18:16 and she says, "I can't, I can't",
  • 18:18 but then she's reminded that she had come into
  • 18:22 the kingdom for such a time as this.
  • 18:26 All over the world today Jewish people remember Esther and Mordecai and
  • 18:31 the Feast of Purim that commemorates when the Jews were given permission to
  • 18:38 defend themselves against those that would look to destroy them.
  • 18:43 And in synagogues today the world over
  • 18:45 Jews read the story of the book of Esther,
  • 18:48 and every time Mordecai's name is mentioned,
  • 18:51 we go, "Hoorah...Hoorah"!
  • 18:53 It's quite a party atmosphere.
  • 18:55 Every time Haman is mentioned we go "Booh...Booh...Booh".
  • 18:59 The story that I want to leave you with, however,
  • 19:01 is the story of one woman who utilized her influence,
  • 19:05 and changed the course of history by virtue of her so doing
  • 19:10 and she's always remembered then as
  • 19:13 a woman who took a stand "for such a time as this."
  • 19:20 Thank you Dr. Seif.
  • 19:22 Well this is the last program of this wonderful series.
  • 19:25 We have had Ted Pearce with us right here
  • 19:27 at this desk for the series.
  • 19:29 We've loved having you with us.
  • 19:30 Oh, my pleasure brother.
  • 19:32 Just great having you.
  • 19:33 Thank you Dave.
  • 19:34 Here's your question of the day.
  • 19:36 The whole series of Esther is about
  • 19:38 "for such a time as this".
  • 19:40 Esther had her time in history
  • 19:43 where she saved the Jewish people.
  • 19:45 She went out and above and beyond.
  • 19:48 How can we do that right here in our time in history?
  • 19:53 How can we go above and beyond to help the Jewish people?
  • 19:56 Well, if you think about it,
  • 19:58 the first thing she did was
  • 19:59 call for 3 days of prayer and fasting.
  • 20:02 And that's really the best place for us to start too.
  • 20:05 If the Lord has given you a burden for the salvation of the Jewish people
  • 20:10 then you're going to spend time in prayer for them, you know?
  • 20:14 And if he hasn't, maybe you should pray for this,
  • 20:17 have the Lord open your eyes to what He's doing in the world
  • 20:22 in regards to the Jewish people, and even the Gentiles.
  • 20:26 So, starting with prayer I think is always the best thing to do,
  • 20:31 but the enemy is coming against the Jewish people in Israel like a flood,
  • 20:37 and his favorite tool is the big fat lie.
  • 20:40 So, I think in many ways, just speaking the truth defeats his kingdom.
  • 20:47 So I think wherever we find lies and insults against the Jewish people,
  • 20:53 it's really an important thing we can do,
  • 20:55 after prayer,
  • 20:56 is just confront the lies.
  • 20:58 But that's so good
  • 21:00 because I really don't think we do that in the church.
  • 21:03 We're Gentiles, we're in the church.
  • 21:05 We never hear, "let's get on our knees and
  • 21:08 pray for the Jewish people".
  • 21:10 And I think if we started doing that
  • 21:12 it might change the time that we're in,
  • 21:14 but we don't do that.
  • 21:15 How do we do that?
  • 21:16 Well, every show that you do here
  • 21:19 ends with Sha'alu Shalom Yerushalayim .
  • 21:22 It's a command from Psalm 122, verse 6,
  • 21:25 that we should take seriously,
  • 21:27 and literally pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
  • 21:29 That's always been sort of the spiritual center of the world,
  • 21:33 and the enemy is just having his way too much of the time.
  • 21:37 So I don't know any other way to confront this accept
  • 21:42 to just obey what the Bible says to do.
  • 21:45 But I think that that's a great point.
  • 21:48 I think it's a wonderful way to end this series.
  • 21:51 We always talk about Esther, for such a time...
  • 21:53 It's almost as such a time as "that",
  • 21:56 but we are living in a time right now
  • 21:58 for such a time as "this".
  • 22:00 We can make a difference.
  • 22:02 And we don't fast.
  • 22:04 We should.
  • 22:05 But that prayer and fasting changes things,
  • 22:07 and think that is a great point,
  • 22:09 that's how we can help the Jewish people
  • 22:12 right here and right now.
  • 22:13 Well this issue that she stood up against
  • 22:18 was issued from what is today Iran.
  • 22:21 Back then, it was Persia,
  • 22:23 but today it's Iran,
  • 22:24 and again today the order is being issued from Iran to annihilate the Jews.
  • 22:30 So really not much has changed since Esther.
  • 22:32 In fact, there may be more of an existential threat today.
  • 22:36 So prayer's not just something that helps,
  • 22:40 it's all that really works.
  • 22:42 It is.
  • 22:43 Would you treat us with one more song for the series?
